McDonald's Corporation is the world's largest chain of hamburger fast food restaurants, serving around 64 million customers daily in 119 countries. Headquartered in the United States, the company began in 1940 as a barbecue restaurant operated by the eponymous Richard and Maurice McDonald; in 1948 they reorganized their business as a hamburger stand using production line principles. Businessman Ray Kroc joined the company as a franchise agent in 1955. He subsequently purchased the chain from the McDonald brothers and oversaw its worldwide growth.
A McDonald's restaurant is operated by either a franchisee, an affiliate, or the corporation itself. The corporation's revenues come from the rent, royalties and fees paid by the franchisees, as well as sales in company-operated restaurants. McDonald's revenues grew 27 percent over the three years ending in 2007 to $22.8 billion, and 9 percent growth in operating income to $3.9 billion.
McDonald's primarily sells hamburgers, cheeseburgers, chicken, french fries, breakfast items, soft drinks, shakes and desserts. In response to changing consumer tastes, the company has expanded its menu to include salads, wraps, smoothies and fruit.
15th May 1940: The world's first McDonald’s restaurant opened in California
The McDonald brothers had successfully run the ‘Airdrome’ hotdog stand in Arcadia, California, for three years before they began their first McDonald's Bar-B-Que restaurant in San Bernardino. The restaurant had twenty-five items on the menu, and was typical of restaurants of its time where customers arrived by car and were served by waiting staff known as car hops.
In 1948 the brothers streamlined their entire restaurant experience when they temporarily closed the restaurant for remodelling. It reopened in October 1948 with a new design where customers ordered food directly at the counter. The brothers also reduced the number of items on the menu and introduced their Speedee Service System that adopted an assembly line approach to simplify food preparation.
Many of these design innovations had first been introduced by the White Castle hamburger chain in the 1920s, but the success of the McDonald brothers’ restaurant saw them seek opportunities to expand their business. In 1953 they began to offer franchise opportunities, firstly of the serving system and then of the entire brand including the name and the architectural design.
The aggressive expansion of the McDonald’s brand was overseen by Ray Kroc, originally a provider of milkshake machines, who persuaded the McDonald brothers to franchise the restaurants throughout the country. The brothers agreed, and received 0.5% of gross sales in franchised restaurants. Kroc completely bought the brothers out in 1961. He paid them $2.7 million for the business, and went on to create the global chain we know today.

SUMMARIES:
- To say that McDonald’s restaurants have become quite the phenomenon would be a blatant understatement. McDonald’s is and has been for quite some time now, the quintessential fast food restaurant the world over, and for very good reason.
- That’s right … should one want to visit this historic landmark and authentic trip to the past, a trip to sunny California would be necessary and who doesn’t want to go to California? The location is nestled at 10207 Lakewood Boulevard, Florence Avenue, Downey, California.
- There were, in fact, two previous locations for McDonald’s, the first being the original BBQ stand that Maurice and Richard opened in 1937. But of course after the public let them know what they were after—the hamburgers—they quickly changed direction and their outlook changed too.
- And so, the Downey location would mark the last location to be opened by the McDonald brothers, as their “little burger stand” had garnered itself quite the following and reputation, and one man, a very influential man, in particular, would come calling and change the brothers’ lives forever.
- And just in case you were wondering, the third location that still stands today isn’t just a museum, or rather a trip down memory lane. It’s still operating and many that have flocked to its location have enjoyed countless meals at the rustic stand, taking the world back to much simpler times and a classic way of enjoying the McDonald’s experience.
- Perhaps there is no greater symbol in the food industry; no greater emblem to call flocks of people forward. And very much like the bell calling workers in for “quitting time,” or lunchtime, the now famous golden arches of McDonald’s restaurants have called many off of the highways and roads the world over.
- Well, it wouldn’t be long before Ray Kroc would buy out the McDonald brothers and if there was heartache on their part, it didn’t last long, as A) their restaurant was in good hands and B) Kroc had surely made it worth their while.
- This probably remains a shock for many, as the location survived as an independent franchise as long as it did. It can definitely be seen as a testament to the standard of keeping things as they were and America’s appreciation for history and heritage.
- In 1994, only a few short years after joining the McDonald’s Corporation in full, the location was almost lost completely, and we ask what would the world be without this single most authentic McDonald’s location?
- So in looking at this location, we see a restaurant with a storied past, a deep-rooted part of the McDonald’s franchise history, and we recognize what an important part of history it is. The fact that it’s still here for people of this generation and future generations to enjoy is quite a marvel indeed.

[Newsa] Mcdonalds
Volo, Ill. – There may be hope for the doomed replica of a historic McDonald’s hamburger restaurant after all.
Upon hearing that McDonald’s plans to demolish its museum in the Chicago suburb of Des Plaines next month, the Volo Auto Museum in Lake County is exploring the possibility of picking up the entire structure and parking it at the auto museum.
The (Crystal Lake) Northwest Herald reports that the auto museum has reached out to the burger giant to save the replica of the first McDonald’s restaurant. Ray Kroc opened it in Des Plaines in 1955 after he franchised the brand from the original owners, Richard and Maurice McDonald.
The auto museum in a Facebook post says it contacted McDonald’s Corp. after pleas from the community to move the McDonald’s museum to Volo.

The First McDonald's in the World
McDonald's education began when, in 1940, Maurice and Richard (Mac and Dick) MacDonalds restaurant relocated their father from Monrovia to San Bernardino, California. At the new location the restaurant was renamed The famous barbecue MacDonalds. The restaurant had about 40 different kinds of dishes cooked on the barbecue. After some time, the brothers noticed that almost all of their income they receive from the sale of hamburgers. After that, they simplified the menu, focusing on the sale of that later formed the basis of fast food: burgers, fries, milkshakes, sweet drinks and apple pie.
