Driving around the City of Fort Myers, Florida on McGregor Boulevard
McGregor Boulevard, originally known as Riverside Avenue, was used historically by cattlemen to run cattle from Fort Myers to Punta Rassa, which was a significant cattle shipping town at the time. McGregor Boulevard is named after former Standard Oil executive Ambrose McGregor who, along with his wife Tootie, lived next door to Thomas Edison's estate in Fort Myers.[3]
After McGregor's death in 1900, Tootie and her second husband Dr. Marshall Orlando Terry (another local figure who donated land for Terry Park Ballfield) sought to have the road paved. They offered financial assistance to the county on the condition that it would be named McGregor Boulevard. Tootie McGregor died before the paving began, and Dr. Terry saw the paving to completion. McGregor Boulevard was officially completed in 1915.[4] In honor of Tootie, Dr. Terry had a fountain installed at the north end of McGregor Boulevard at Cleveland Avenue. The fountain was removed in the early 1960s to accommodate the construction of the Caloosahatchee Bridge and overpass over the intersection. The fountain was then relocated to Fort Myers Country Club, where it stands today.[5]
In 1923, McGregor Boulevard was designated part of State Road 25, which extended from Punta Rassa to Palm Beach. It was redesignated as State Road 867 during the 1945 Florida state Road renumbering, with the portion east of US 41 to Palm Beach becoming State Road 80.

NBC2 Investigates McGregor Boulevard, a hot spot for dangerous driving
The safety of the Fort Myers city-owned stretch of McGregor Boulevard is under scrutiny.
In the last four years, more than 500 crashes happened along the four miles of McGregor from US-41 to Colonial Boulevard.
Bonnie Levoy remembers every accident that happened in front of her home on McGregor because there have been at least 10.
The car was wrapped around the tree, and the body was on the ground here, said Levoy. And then the car caught fire.
I've had two deaths on my property. When it becomes common, then there's definitely something wrong.
Her neighbors won't even let their children play outside.
'We are concerned about it, said Keven Ackerman. There's too much traffic.
Construction is underway on the stretch of McGregor to replace the road's storm drainage system. But neighbors want to see more safety improvements that include updated crosswalks, medians, and signage.
The state forked out most of the cash for the drainage project — $4.8 million while the project costs $5.4 million. The city is footing the remaining $600,000. None of that taxpayer money will pay for safety improvements.
We need to look at it, said City Manager Saeed Kazemi. This is the time to look at it.
Kazemi said it's on his radar, but he doesn't think improved crosswalks and additional signage will solve all of McGregor's problems.
If someone wants to speed, they're gonna speed, said Kazemi.
About 20,000 cars travel along this stretch of McGregor every day. That's roughly 600,000 cars per month.
We checked the records and found that in a three-year span, law enforcement only issued 66 tickets.
Fort Myers City Councilman Michael Flanders believes tougher speed enforcement is needed. Flanders also said he thinks the current crosswalks are lame.
The crosswalks need to be more illuminated and apparent, said Flanders. We're thinking about LED lights in the pavement and a little more signage.
Resident Buddy Hart has a suggestion.
If there was some indicator like LED lights, I think that would force more people to stop and let you cross.
Kazemi said he hears neighbors' concerns, and he will take them into consideration.
Whatever it needs, as many crosswalks as it needs, we are gonna put it there, the city manager said. This is the time to put it, rather than coming and doing it later.
Even if the city decides to move forward with these safety enhancements, Kazemi said neighbors wouldn't see any changes for another year and a half. That's when the drainage and sewage project is expected to wrap up.

Bear captured near McGregor Blvd in Fort Myers
A black bear was captured in a neighborhood near McGregor Boulevard and College Parkway.
The unwanted guest scared dozens of people this morning while on the hunt for breakfast and a place to relax.
The young bear is now far away from families after living in the area for three days. The two-year-old, 200-lb. black bear made a neighborhood near the Caloosahatchee River in Fort Myers his home Sunday morning.
At times, he was only feet away from neighbors on Sundown Harbor Court and Peck Avenue.
Officers with Florida Fish and Wildlife spent nearly five hours tracking the bear down.
I was amazed. I couldn't believe it. I've lived here 30 years and never seen a bear here, ever, said homeowner Bill Evans.
The black bear spent most of his time in Evans' yard. That's where dozens gathered for the unplanned watch party.
This is kind of a peaceful little street generally. There's not a whole lot of excitement on this street usually, said Evans.
The buzz about the bear being cornered off quickly spread. Even more neighbors turned out to get a glimpse. That's when the biologist and sheriff's deputies showed up. It was just another sign to neighbor Philip Krieg, the bear had overstayed it's welcome.
Well, he made me nervous. It was like from me to there, that bush. Like 20 to 30 feet, said Krieg.
The bear was tranquilized and then carried off by FWC. Relieved neighbors applauded the efforts as the bear was being taken out of their neighborhood.
FWC officers have not decided where they will release the bear. They also say he was just searching for a place to call home.Subcribe on my channel

Fort Myers or Ft. Myers, is the county seat and commercial center of Lee County, Florida, United States. Fort Myers is a gateway to the Southwest Florida region and a major tourist destination within Florida. The winter estates of Thomas Edison (Seminole Lodge) and Henry Ford (The Mangoes) are major attractions. The city is named after Colonel Abraham Myers.
Spain originally had colonial influence in Florida, succeeded by Great Britain and, lastly, the United States. During the American Indian Wars of the 1830s, the United States built Fort Myers as one of the first forts along the Caloosahatchee River; it was used as a base of operations against the Seminole. During the Seminole Wars and Indian Removal period, Fort Myers was a strategic location, with access to Atlantic waterways. While many Seminole were forced to remove to Indian Territory west of the Mississippi River, others used their knowledge of the Everglades and Florida wilderness to resist the Americans. They were never defeated and two federally recognized Seminole tribes still control some of their historic territory.
In 1947, Mina Edison deeded Seminole Lodge to the City of Fort Myers, in memory of her late husband and for the enjoyment of the public. By 1988, the adjacent Henry Ford winter estate was purchased by the city and opened for public tours in 1990. The combined properties today are known as the Edison and Ford Winter Estates.

Driving across the Midpoint Bridge between Cape Coral and Fort Myers
The Midpoint Memorial Bridge (also locally known as the Midpoint Bridge) is a bridge located in Southwest Florida. It spans the Caloosahatchee River, connecting Fort Myers and Cape Coral. It is a four-lane fixed span one and one-quarter mile long. The bridge is so-named because its placement situates it roughly halfway between the Cape Coral Bridge to the south, and the Caloosahatchee Bridge to the north. It carries County Road 884, which is known as Colonial Boulevard on the Fort Myers Side, and Veterans Parkway on the Cape Coral Side.
The bridge was first proposed in the 1970s, but construction was delayed for many years, largely due to opposition in Fort Myers. After a series of court battles, reaching the Florida Supreme Court, construction began in 1995, and the bridge opened for traffic on October 19, 1997. The bridge's location was considered as possible location of the Cape Coral Bridge before its current location was determined.[1]
The Midpoint Memorial Bridge was constructed as part of the extension of Colonial Boulevard into Cape Coral. Before construction, Colonial Boulevard terminated at State Road 867 (McGregor Boulevard), which runs parallel to the river. In Cape Coral, C.R. 884 (locally known as Veterans Parkway) now terminates at S.R. 78 (Pine Island Road) near Matlacha, and includes an overpass over the intersection with Del Prado Boulevard (County Road 867A). The addition of the Midpoint Memorial Bridge resulted in several ancillary road projects in Fort Myers as well. Colonial Boulevard was widened to six lanes and overpasses were constructed over McGregor Boulevard and at the intersection with U.S. 41.
The bridge is owned by the Lee County Department of Transportation. There is currently a two dollar toll in effect for westbound vehicles only, and there is no toll for eastbound traffic. Florida's statewide Sunpass prepaid electronic toll collection system is accepted on the Midpoint Bridge, along with Lee County's Leeway prepaid toll system, which is also used on the Cape Coral Bridge, and the Sanibel Causeway. However, there is a variable pricing scheme in effect: Cape Coral & Midpoint bridges allow a 25% discount for Sunpass users only during the following Variable Pricing Hours:
