Silver Lake Recreation Area - Withlacoochee State Forest - Quick Tour
Silver Lake Recreation Area, Withlacoochee State Forest, Hernando County, Florida
From
Old Iron Bridge in Withlacoochee State Forest
Croom is an old town long since vanished and is now part of the Withlacoochee State Forest. I explored a lot around certain areas covering where I can and have found lots of evidence from the town. This area is where Iron Bridge used to be crossing the Withlacoochee River.
In the late 1890's Croom was a vital little agricultural town that sported a turpentine still, sawmill, sugar mill, RR switch out and a RR Bridge. The people of Brooksville would ride the train out to the town and swim in the river under the Old Iron RR Bridge.
Silver Lake in Withlacoochee State Forest
This is a beautiful lake I hiked by while on the Florida Trail in The Withlacoochee State Forest. It's located in the Silver Lake Recreational Area, lots of trails nearby and camping. A very nice place!
Tooke Lake, Hernando County
Tooke lake was the location of Gamble's commissary, a general store that served the workers of the Centralia sawmill and the general public of Hernando County between 1910 and 1922.

Take a journey into the past with me as I explore this abandoned ranch site in Withlacoochee State Forest. It dates back to around the 1940's and is just some of the interesting history in this area. There was an old ghost town nearby as well in the 1800's. Some traces from the past could be seen and is a very serene wilderness to explore. AS ALWAYS ALL ARTIFACTS WERE LEFT UNDISTURBED. It is prohibited and illegal to dig, metal detect and remove artifacts from these public lands in Florida. Please be respectful of what history remains. Thank you for watching and be sure to subscribe to my channel for more old Florida adventures.
Dames Cave at Withlacoochee State Forest
A glimpse into the Dames Cave area which is located in the Citrus Tract portion of the Withlacoochee State Forest in Citrus County, Florida and are found on a western portion of the Brooksville Ridge. This landscape is dominated by karst landforms including uvalas, dolines, solution valleys, and caves. Geologically, the caves are among the oldest in Florida. One of the most popular places to visit in the forest so it can get crowded. But then other times you can have the whole place to yourself... The entrance trail to the Dames Caves is located south of Lecanto on highway 491 please be respectful and do not leave trash or vandalize the caves.

Centralia Ghost Town in Hernando County (Old Railroad Line)
Take a journey with me along the old railroad line that went into the town of Centralia, now a ghost town in Hernando County. It was a logging town during the early 1900’s. Some of Florida’s largest and oldest Cypress Trees were logged out of here. The town was booming but short lived, after the trees were gone the town faded away. It existed from 1910-1922 somewhere around that time period. It had a population of around 1500 people or so, the town had a hotel, movie palace, commissary and other buildings. The railroad was used to haul out lumber and bring in supplies. It eventually connected with the sawmill and was part of the Tampa Northern Railroad. Check out these links for more information:
Annutteliga Hammock | Hernando County | Florida
Situated in the Brooksville Ridge, the Annutteliga Hammock is part of the anticipated wildlife corridor between the Chassahowitzka Wildlife Management Area and the Withlacoochee State Forest, that would enhance the viability of a sustained Florida black bear habitat.
It is also an important area for groundwater recharge and offers unspoiled recreational opportunities, that includes hiking and equestrian activities.
