It was August 2008. I spent a lot of this trip crying, as I knew it was possibly one of the last times I would be here. It was a very special trip for me. I have a lot of Alaska footage and film from my life there (20 years worth) and my drive down the Alcan and through the United States. I have soooo much footage that if I can get a sample from all of my years of footage it is possible that my channel here, will be one of the best Alaska travel channels on YouTube!

Glass-domed Train from Talkeetna to Denali, Alaska
As our train meandered across the unadulterated landscape, I found that I was reassuring myself that it was real. Such scenery…as though it was “too beautiful” to be true. I rode along with Awe, Wonder, and Amazement, as we all shared in an exchange of childlike fascination. While being a train ride, I’m inclined to default to recommending it, but truly, this stretch of track will lead you through a mere part of the heart of Alaska, but it will invite you to the center of your being, where you're reacquainted with your youth.
This ride was just over four hours, where passengers relaxed in their comfortable seats, while enjoying refreshments and narration, or enjoyed the brisk air on the cars’ “porches.” Lunch was enjoyed on the lower level of the car. All luggage, carry-ons included, were stowed, not to be seen again until disembarkation. I should note that the cars we rode in on this trip were private cars, not to be confused with Alaska Railroad’s Goldstar Service cars, found on its website; I indulged in one, though, to Seward:

Denali Star Departure
Alaska Railroad
Anchorage, AK
Recorded on 7/21/2010 by James Ogden
Overview:
The northbound Denali Star pulls out of the depot in Anchorage, AK, beginning its 12 hour journey to Fairbanks, AK. This is a daily train in both directions during the summer months. In the winter, a much shorter train travels the route once a week. This train serves Denali National Park, and as such is very popular in the summer.
Technical Info:
This train is lead by two SD70MAC locomotives, built by EMD. They are a custom order, and have the ability to generate head-end power for the passenger cars. The only apparent difference from the outside, indicating this feature, is the flared radiator grills, towards the rear of the locomotives. The train is made up of a variety of car types. The baggage car dates back to the late 1940's or early 1950's. The two bilevel cars behind the baggage car are Alaska Railroad's Gold Star cars, or first class. They are fairly new, having been built in 2004, as products of Colorado Railcar, Inc. Following them is the Bistro Car, which is a rebuilt Pullman Standard commuter car, which once belonged to the Southern Pacific. Behind the Bistro Car is the Adventure Class section of the train, which is all single level cars. They are a mix of ACF Dome coaches, Pullman Standard 60-seat coaches, and some newer Daewoo coaches, which are identifiable by their larger windows. The consist varies from day to day. The grey bilevel cars at the end of the train belong to Holland America Tours. They are private cars for travelers with Holland America Line who choose to do a land tour in Alaska. Those cars are the largest passenger rail cars in the world, at 89 feet long and just over 18 feet tall.
