Waterford City is the capital of the Sunny South East of Ireland and Ireland's oldest city.
Viking raiders first established a settlement near Waterford in 853AD. It and all the other longphorts were vacated in 902, the Vikings having been driven out by the native Irish. The Vikings re-established themselves in Ireland at Waterford in 914, led at first by Ottir Iarla (Jarl Ottar) until 917, and after that by Ragnall ua Ímair and the Uí Ímair dynasty, and built what would be Ireland's first city. Among the most prominent rulers of Waterford was Ivar (The Boneless) of Waterford.
In 1167, Diarmait Mac Murchadha, the deposed King of Leinster, failed in an attempt to take Waterford. He returned in 1170 with Cambro-Norman mercenaries under Richard de Clare, 2nd Earl of Pembroke (known as Strongbow); together they besieged and took the city after a desperate defence. In furtherance of the Norman invasion of Ireland, King Henry II of England landed at Waterford in 1171. Waterford and then Dublin were declared royal cities, with Dublin also declared capital of Ireland.
Throughout the medieval period, Waterford was Ireland's second city after Dublin. In the 15th century Waterford repelled two pretenders to the English throne: Lambert Simnel and Perkin Warbeck. As a result, King Henry VII gave the city its motto: Urbs Intacta Manet Waterfordia (Waterford remains the untaken city).
After the Protestant Reformation, Waterford remained a Catholic city and participated in the confederation of Kilkenny -- an independent Catholic government from 1642 to 1649. This was ended abruptly by Oliver Cromwell, who brought the country back under English rule; his nephew Henry Ireton finally took Waterford in 1650 after a major siege.
The 18th century was a period of huge prosperity for Waterford. Most of the city's best architecture appeared during this time. In the 19th century, great industries such as glass making and ship building thrived in the city.
The city hosts a number of festivals during the year including the ever-popular Spraoi.
A natural playground for Arts, Golf, Water Sports, Equestrian, Walking, Angling and Cycling enthusiasts, Waterford City and County offer the complete holiday experience.
Waterford City was founded by Viking traders in 914 and it has an exciting medieval flavour and riverside bustle.
The Waterford Museum of Treasures tells the 1100-year-story of Waterford from the treasures of Viking Waterford at Reginald's Tower, the oldest civic urban building in Ireland, to the story of Georgian Waterford at the Bishop's Palace from 1700 to 1970.
Waterford City is the home of Waterford Crystal, a lifestyle product of exquisite craftsmanship. A visit to the House of Crystal visitor centre includes an opportunity to choose from the world's largest selection of Waterford Crystal. The factory tour offers first hand access to all areas of traditional crystal production.
The city has a strong maritime tradition and an estimated 500,000 people enjoyed the colourful spectacle of the 2011 Tall Ships Race and festival of music and culture in the city and along the river Suir Estuary to Dunmore East.

Winterval 2013 Waterford, Ireland Part 25
Seasonal festival held in Watwerford, Itrland at Christmas time. THe coach goes past the Tower Hotel and then the equestrian statue of Thomas Francis Meagher, the memorial to those from Waterford who lost the lives in the sinkings by German U-Boat U-62 of the SS Formby on December 15th and the SS Conibeg on the 17th of December, 1917. I turn the camrea to the left breifly to film the front of what was my grandfather, T.J. Sheridan's Ford showroom, Reginald's Tower being to the left just before that.
Winterval Festival, Waterford 2012 Part 8.
Festival held in Waterford over the Christmas season. Filmed from the base of the Clock Tower on the Quay in Waterford, I zoom down to where the Ice Skating Rink is, then up Barronstrand Street to John Robert's Square, where the carousel is. Also in the shot is the Granville Hotel, formerly the birthplace of Thomas Francis Meagher, Irish patriot, Civil War General and Governor of Montana. He brought the Irish Flag, the Tricolour, to Waterford, where it was flown for the first time at 33, The Mall. I plan to put up a short video about Meagher later.
Winterval 2013 Waterford, Ireland Part 4
A seasonal festival held in Waterford, Ireland at Christmas time. As the crowd await the arrival of Santa Claus on a Viking longboat on the River Suir, I pan around to what was my grandfather T.J. Sheridan's Ford dealership and before that the Globe Hotel, Reginald's Tower, over 1,000 years old, the equestrian statue of Thomas Francis Meagher, the Tower Hotel, and an apartment bulding, part of which is named after Waterford actress, Anna Manahan.

BOBBIO: 6 Louis XIV The Sun King: Dungarvan Shopping Centre, Ireland
Entering the Dungarvan Shopping Centre. I like this place as it has got a lot of light and is always a hive of activity. Walking through the Centre I am catching on my right: on the second rack of the Eason newspaper stand, a light purple banner carrying a photograph and a heading on the front page of the Irish Examiner [LIFE/STYLE From Dev to Versailles - Alan Rickman’s role as King Louis shows his penchant for playing real people: 14]. I like this king’s formal style: “Louis XIV, par la grace de Dieu, roi de France et de Navarre - Louis XIV, by the Grace of God, King of France and of Navarre”.
With exiting the Centre I am reading the sign overhead: “Thank you for shopping at Dungarvan Shopping Centre. Go raibh maith agat as do Shiopadóireacht a dhéanamh Linn.” Walking along by the WLR FM studio, and along High Street, and by the sculpture “Daily Balance” of a man rolling a milk churn. Entering Grattan Square.
From Prologue
Waiting for the lights to change at the Bank of Ireland on to T.F. Meagher Street. Looking down towards Lawlor’s Hotel; to its iron balcony. I am finding myself thinking about Michael Collins’s visit here on Sunday, the 26th March 1922. He was almost kidnapped that day. After being rescued he went on to give a rousing speech from the balcony of the Devonshsire Arms Hotel. Sad to have to say it in this way, but wasn’t he ‘taken out’ almost five months to the day over Bandon (Droichead na Bandan) way.
From Prologue
Turning and beginning to look clockwise around the square at the signs. I love reading signs wherever I go for they always say something to me other than their obvious message. For some reason my eyes are alighting on Nagle’s Bar Est. 2014. A Dungarvan woman: a Mrs. Nagle is coming to mind. What an amazingly courageous person who on Tuesday, the 4th December 1649 went up and offered a flagon of refreshment to Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658) upon him and his exhausted army entering the town. Her gallant action is said to have caused him to revoke his order for the massacre of the townspeople, and the destruction of the town. Most likely however, it had a lot more to do with his ‘Me and my troops are Divinely Chosen’ extremist mind set, in that …
