Perched atop the mountain that looms over Zagreb, there is an ancient castle. The ruins of Medvedgrad Castle date back to the mid 1200s. Today, Medvedgrad is a concert venue and historical site that offers as much a look into the past as a glimpse into Croatia's future.

On the southern slope of Medvednica, nests a picturesque medieval castle which has been watching over Zagreb for eight centuries.
Under the southern tower was erected a monument named the Homeland Altar , burning an eternal flame in the honor of all Croatian heroes.

Medvedgrad is a medieval fortified town located on the south slopes of Medvednica mountain, approximately halfway from the Croatian capital Zagreb to the mountain top Sljeme. For defensive purposes it was built on a hill, Mali Plazur, that is a spur of the main ridge of the mountain that overlooks the city. On a clear day the castle can be seen from far away, especially the high main tower. Below the main tower of the castle there is Altar of the homeland which is dedicated to Croatian soldiers killed in the Croatian War of Independence.

Kad se s juga približavamo središtu Zagreba, rijetko ćemo, suočeni s gustim tkivom prometnica i grada koji je pred nama, pogledom pretražiti masiv Medvednice i na njemu potražiti osamljeno bajkovito zdanje. Pa ipak, ponekad se vrijedi isključiti iz užurbane svakodnevice i barem nakratko pobjeći u osamu Medvedgrada, posve sigurno, najpoznatijeg srednjovjekovnog burga u sjeverozapadnoj Hrvatskoj.
Vrh Malog Plazura, izdvojenog brijega visokog oko 600 metara gdje je sredinom 13. stoljeća sagrađena utvrda s dvostrukim pojasom zidina i visokim branič-kulama, bio je sjajna, gotovo neosvojiva strateška točka. I doista, Medvedgrad nije stradao od opsada; presudile su mu povijesne okolnosti, neodržavanje i potresi koji su ga gotovo uništili i zbrisali s lica zemlje. Utvrda koju danas gledamo rezultat je dugogodišnjih istraživanja i obnove. *

i couchsurfed in zagreb, the capital of croatia, and my host was so amazing. even though he had work and school and other things going on he was able to take me to the medvedgrad and show me around the city a bit. i was very grateful because if i had not stayed with him he wouldn't have been able to drive me to the castle. if was deep in the woods. that's why I say couchsurfing is the way to go on a budget. otherwise transportation alone would have probably cost me like 100 bucks round trip for a taxi.
when he was working i visited st marks church and the zagreb cathedral among many other amazing sights in zagreb. i had a ton of fun exploring the capital of croatia and i can't wait to return to zagreb and meet my couchsurfing host again as well as explore some other areas that i may have missed this time.
i had cevapis for breakfast, lunch and dinner hahaha. they're the best. if you have a chance to visit croatia, definitely visit zagreb.

Nature Park Medvednica -Sljeme Zagreb Croatia
Mèdvednica is a mountain in central Croatia, just north of Zagreb and marking the southern border of the historic region of Zagorje. The highest peak, at 1,035 m, is Sljeme. Most of the area of Medvednica is a nature park, a type of preservation lesser than a national park.The area of the park is 228.26 square kilometers and about 63% is covered with forest. The name Medvednica could be translated as bear mountainand Medvedgrad is a medieval castle on its southwestern edges. During summer one can find pleasant refreshment on Medvednica and during winter temperature inversion is sometimes present. Anticyclone forms above the cold continent during winter. When its center is close, it is cold and gloomy in Zagreb and on Sljeme it is warmer. Mean annual air temperature on Medvednica is 6.2 °C and in Zagreb 11.4 °C. Mean temperature in summer months is on average 6 °C lower than it is in Zagreb.There is a winter sports center on the northern slopes towards Sljeme. The center has hosted several FIS World Cup slalom skiing races, known as the Snow Queen Trophy.
The winter sports center consists of one chairlift for three persons and two T-bar lifts. Equipment for producing artificial snow has been added, and because of that the skiing season has been prolonged to more than four months.
Zagreb - Medvedgrad - road cycling route
This was my first proper ride this year.
It's a nice little ride, with around 10% incline, up to an old medieval castle above Zagreb.
If you get there within working hours, lady at the ticket office will look after your bike while you explore the castle.
Relive is an app that creates a short but effective flyover video of your ride. I love the end results as they serve as a little memento to your past rides. Especially neat feature is that it takes the photos from your ride in Strava and places them along your route.

Zagreb (Croatia) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Zagreb is the political and cultural heart of Croatia, an amiable capital city located at the intersection of Central, Eastern and Southern Europe and a city that holds many memories of the Danube Monarchy. Zagreb originated in the Middle Ages from two rival settlements on neighbouring hills, the bishop's seat of Kaptol which is dominated by its cathedral and the free city of Gradec which was its political centre. They both formed the city’s Upper Town. The cathedral dominates the Kaptol district, its two steeples towering above the old city. The city’s marvellous Botanical Garden contains an array of wonderful natural sights. It boasts ten thousand tree and plant varieties including alpine, Mediterranean, and the exotic. Small ponds with water plants are also included in the four point seven hectare gardens. An imposing arcaded facade forms the entrance to the Mirogoj Cemetery which is laid out as a park and is an artistic masterpiece. Here, leading sculptors built tombs for the country’s most famous personalities from the arts, culture and politics, including the grave of Franjo Tudjman. A narrow mountain road leads up to the Medvednica Nature Park, outside the city gates. The mediaeval Medvedgrad Fortress is a most striking and interesting attraction located in twenty three thousand hectares of natural landscape. Zagreb is a special city, unique, with a never-ending story, a city that has witnessed a thousand years and, due to its historic values, has become a European Capital Of Culture.
