Meigetsuin - The Hydrangea Temple in Kita Kamakura
Meigetsu-in temple is all that remains of the great temple Zenko-ji, which fell into decline during the Edo period. Zenko-ji had been established in 1268 by Hojo Tokimune (the Eighth Regent of the Kamakura bakufu, who was also the founder of Engakuji) to hold memorial services at his father's prayer hall. The site of Zenko-ji had been used by Tokimune's father Tokiyori (the Fifth Regent) after he had stepped down from power at the age of 29 to devote himself to the priesthood under the leadership of Doryu Rankei, a Chinese Zen priest. Tokiyori had built a small prayer hall and named it Saimyo-ji.
Meigetsu-in came into being in 1383 during an expansion of Zenko-ji temple. Intended as a sub-temple, it was built by Norikata Uesugi (1335-1394), the Vice Governor of Kamakura. He appointed Shugon Misshitsu (d. 1390), a sixth generation disciple of Rankei, as the founding priest. Meigetsu means The full moon and was the family name of the Uesugi clan in Yamanouchi district of Kamakura.
As noted above, Megetsu-in is the only vestige of the Zenko-ji to survive, owing to a lack of sponsorship.
The old stairs surrounded by blooming hydrangeas is a popular sight in Japan.

Meigetsu-in Temple which was founded in 1160 as Meigetsu-an hermitage is one of the sights of hydrangea in Kamakura, it is called hydrangea temple. In the mid-June in the rainy season, this temple is dyed bright blue by about 2,500 Hime-ajisai hydrangeas.
In the precincts of Meigetsu-in Temple, there are many sight spots, such as “Meigetsu-in yagura” grotto grave and “Karesansui-teien” dry landscape garden. Particularly, the scenery from Satori-no-mado round window at the main hall is popular for photography enthusiasts, and in the backyard behind the round window, you can enjoy irises in early summer and the scenery of colored leaves in autumn.
Then, why don’t you take a break at “Gessho-ken” tea house in the precincts of Meigetsu-in Temple? Matcha which drink while watching the forest and listening to the chirping of birds is a special taste.

2018 鎌倉明月院の紫陽花(4K) Hydrangea At Meigetsu-in Temple In Kamakura(UHD)

Rare views of cutting Hydrangeas @ famous Meigetsu-in Kamakura with Adeyto in Japan
Was tipped off that the Hydrangea-famous Meigetsuin iconic Temple in Kamakura will cut their flowers on Tuesday morning! A very special photo op that not many photographers in the world have the chance to see as it only lasts about 2 hours!
So here we are, with no phone connection (they say the location is between mountains that's why..really, Japan?) and I couldn't stream this live so here it is two days later!
The flowers still stunning & in bloom, are culled early to make sure the bloom will come back next year in full power!
Kind of sad, but even more so scenic!
