WALKING IN JAPAN - Japan history house and Meiji Tunnel - Lost Japan
This video comes out of the vault from my years in Japan, and captures a hike I enjoyed with my daughter and her friend Chizuru. The little stretch of road we are walking is part of the old Japan Tokaido Highway. Come share a pleasant walk through a little village between Shizuoka and Fujieda and located just east of the famous Meiji Tunnel.

Meiji Tunnel 明治トンネル - Walking in Japan 日本お化け橋 - 日本のモンスター
Built in 1876 the Meiji tunnel was Japan's first toll tunnel. This brick structure was built in order to allow travelers on the famous Tokaido highway to avoid climbing Utsunoya pass which was known as the third most difficult mountain crossing on the entire route from Tokyo to Kyoto. The lighting was really poor inside the tunnel and we didn't get much footage and thus the video is fairly short and of low quality. It's really pretty spooky inside this tunnel especially as there are few visitors to this area and one must normally pass through the mountain all alone. Water drips from the ceilings and our footsteps reverberate through the entire length of the tunnel. The author Patrick Carey relates his experience here in his wonderful book Rediscovering The Old Tokaido and describes how the lights were out when he walked through the tunnel on a dark evening without a flashlight.

Japan Mountain Village Encounter 日本の村人を満たす - Walking in Japan 日本のモンスター
A visiting friend and I explore a small village in the Japan Southern Alps and are welcomed into the home of an elderly tea farmer and his wife. The couple's son and daughter-in-law are visiting from the city and the family is busy making Japanese rice cakes called mochi. Mochi making is a very special activity in Japan and this family is making three color mochi in celebration of the Japanese holiday Girl's Day (hinamatsuri) which is a special day reserved for young girls. Girl's Day is normally celebrated on March 3rd in Japan though the people in this particular village celebrate the holiday in April due to the fact that the month of March is still rather cold and unfestive in the high mountains.
Few young Japanese know how to make mochi the old fashioned way and it's a real treat for us to get to watch the family steam a special type of rice called mochikome over a wood-fired stove before pounding the rice by hand in a large wooden basin. I've tried this myself with my wife's family and I can report that the hammer is very heavy and the process much harder than it looks, as one poorly aimed swipe will strike the side of the basin and send tiny splinters of wood into the mochi and thus ruin the batch. Also, to do the job properly requires a coordinated effort between the man swinging the hammer and the woman turning the rice. Many older men in Japan take considerable pride in their ability to handle the hammer well and mochi making events within large families (like my wife's) can result in some pleasant competition between the men taking turns at the hammer. The couple in the video were very kind and even gave us a little tour of their home. The wife proudly showed us the family's collection of antique scrolls including one which depicts several significant figures in the Japanese imperial line. We can roughly date this particular scroll by the fact that the small child shown at the bottom of the scroll is the Showa emperor Hirohito who was born in 1901 and ruled Japan until the end of World War Two. The husband has lived in this village his entire life while his wife grew up in another village across the mountain and moved to this home when the couple was married in 1955. The house where the couple lives is more than 100 years old.
At the start of the video we walk through rows of cultivated green tea plants. As it is almost the tea season the plants are nearly ready for harvest, and at one point you can see a shade tarp over some of the plants which is a common practice in this area and is done just before harvest in order to sweeten the tea. In the video we get a quick glimpse of a small garden with Japanese wasabi plant growing in a tiny flowing stream. Wasabi is the spicy green horseradish used to season sushi, and wasabi root requires very clean, cold water to grow, and many farmers in this area make use of the mountain's abundant rainfall to grow wasabi for their own use or to sell at small roadside stands along the highway. Many of the farmers also raise a special type of edible freshwater fish in special pools fed by the streams. Another point of interest with this old home is the fact that it includes a special indoor work area called a doma just inside the front door. The doma was where the rice pounding was being done in the video and traditionally this special area of the home was reserved for outdoor work which might need to be performed indoors in bad weather. In this case the rice pounding is being done inside in order to reduce the chance of dust mixing into the rice paste. The doma was also the area where the kitchen and bath might be located. The actual living area is raised up and away from the floor and one's shoes must be removed before entering this area of the home. Most modern Japanese homes will have only a small area within the front door called a genkan which serves the same function. It was rather dark inside the home and I was unable to properly film some wonderful sights such as the open ceiling which revealed an intricate lattice of huge hand-hewn beams with interlocking joints held together without a single nail.
Before we said our thanks and departed the family filled our hands with large and delicious Japanese oranges and wished us well in our further ventures which included a visit to a lovely Shinto (native religion of Japan) shrine immediately behind the family home and a leisurely stroll through the rest of the village admiring the wonderful antique architecture.

Gaienmae Ginkgo Icho Namiki Avenue - Tokyo - 外苑前 - 4K Ultra HD
The Icho Namiki Avenue in Gaienmae is a rather typical large avenue in Tokyo all year long with the exception of few weeks a year (Mid November ! Mid December) when all the ginkgo trees lined up on each side the avenue turn to gold. This turns a rather banal place into a magical and romantic avenue that is definitely worth checking if you are visiting Japan this time of year!

Oyashirazu Geosite - Itoigawa Global Geopark
The cliffs at which the Northern Japanese Alps fall into the Sea of Japan were the product of terrestrial volcanic activity occurring about 100 million years ago. The ancient Hokuriku Road was wedged in a small space between these cliffs and the sea, making for a perilous journey, especially when the waves would surge. Large pockets and caves eroded into the wall where travelers would take refuge from the stormy seas still remain on the face of these cliffs.
During the Heian period (CE 794-1185), following their clan's defeat in the Genpei War, the wife of Taira no Yorimori followed her husband from Kyoto through these cliffs to the Kanbara District of Echigo Province, in what is now Nagaoka City. It was during this journey when her child was swept away by the raging waves. In memory of this, she composed the poem: Oyashirazu ko wa kono ura no namimakura Koshiji no iso no awa to kieyuku From this poem was born the name of these cliffs, Oyashirazu, 'without the parents knowing.'
During the Meiji era, a road was carved out halfway up the cliffs. During the Showa era a tunnel was built through the mountains, forever changing the shape of the Hokuriku Road. Finally, during the Heisei era, the fourth generation Hokuriku Expressway was completed. In addition to these four generations of roads, Oyashirazu also marks the origin of the Tsugami Shindo Road, making this the intersection of many roads from many ages. Here, where the sheer cliffs spread out against the Sea of Japan, gaze upon the many incarnations of the Hokuriku Road and enjoy a stroll along the shore where you just might find some jade!

Japan mountain village tableau 日本山村タブロー - softypapa adventures
I found this small graveyard adjacent a very old abandoned building of remarkable traditional craftsmanship in a tiny village near the coastal farming community of Yui, Japan. This video explores the graveyard, the wooden structure as well as the area around these which form the gateway from the village into the deeper mountains full of abandoned homes, farms and even solitary graves, forgotten and lost in the shadows of dark, silent cedar forests

THE PATH OF WILDNESS
The Path of Wildness is easy to find
The course of a stream
Leaves blown in the wind
A beast's track through the brush
And the direction of our first inclination
The Path of Wildness is an answer and response to a prescribed way of life which may leave some individuals with a sense that their living is little more than a series of pre-determined, step-like episodes between birth and death. The stages of living between these events: childhood, adolescence, adulthood, parenthood and senior are themselves natural and in accord with the needs of the species and most individuals. Many find their satisfaction in living this course and to these individuals I have little or nothing to say. Others though long for something more; something innate, genetic and seemingly calling. Adventure and change can give a degree of satisfaction and relief yet even these may seem too tame. To those who feel drawn to something beyond the entertainment and stimulation of senses I offer a walk along The Path of Wildness. Don't bother penciling the event in your schedule, preparing a pack with goodies and supplies or even inviting a friend along, for this experience is along the course of your first inclination and you must surely always go alone.
