[Wikipedia] Menokin
Menokin, also known as Francis Lightfoot Lee House, was the plantation of Francis Lightfoot Lee near Warsaw, Virginia. Lee was a signer of the United States Declaration of Independence. Menokin was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1971.
Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) documentation, including photos from the 1940s, shows the house standing and reported that it was in poor condition, awaiting a restorer. The National Park Service webpage shows the house in ruins, but reports that woodwork had been removed and placed in storage in the 1960s. Although the house has partly collapsed, the Menokin Foundation has developed a plan to restore the house using glass segments to fill missing portions of the building instead of trying to restore the house to its original condition.

Cat Point Creek is located in Richmond County Virginia, its a unique environment as it traverses 23 miles. In 1996 I became the project director of the Cat Point Creek Environmental Research Project. Part of the River Corridors and Wetlands Restoration Partners Program of the US Environmental Protection Agency. Problems that face Cat Point are typical of all wetlands today. Silts, non point sources (Runoff, Septic Systems) Point sources that are covered by grandfathered discharge permits, Other contributions such as direct discharge where some view the wetlands as a dead area . The project area was 4 miles wide and 23 miles long, in other words 92 square miles. The uniqueness of Cat Point is the diversity of wetlands, its contributions as a water source ( Aquifer) for drinking water for local residents wells. The issue of phosphates, the scare of pfisteria , not present at Cat Point.. Fertilizer runoff, a ruptured retaining wall on an old sanitary water treatment facility, created impacts on the lower wetlands. The paddler will find Cat Point a unique enviornment as I said, as you go from Swampland, to a wooded wetland (most of this video)to a coastal wetland also known as a scrub shrub environment. Unlike the large funded projects with tax dollars in abundance the approach of Cat Point was to get local residents involved in restoring and protecting their area. IN the lower wetlands volunteers turned out to thrash Saltmarsh Cordgrass for replanting. Reintroducing plants such as hydrillia and water celery and restoring habitat for local macroinvertebrates, as well restoring habitat for mammals and waterfowl. Grass shrimp were a particular issue as Crabs breed within brackish water environs and without the little macros populations could not be established and maintained. In the ten years plus eagle populations have rebounded, otters have re-established their presence, an over abundance of beavers upstream however their dams held water that came into use during the drought. Development along the creek has been somewhat limited, one area was given to the Nature Conservancy thank goodness, another farm was turned over to the Rappahannock River National Wildlife Refuge, the Tayloe Unit.Independently of the work of the project. Areas of wetlands perform a vital function as well as habitat, plants and filter feeders strain harmful pollutants out of the water and recharge ecosystems. Students from local and some not so local high schools would come to the project to study wetlands and the role of wetlands in the Chesapeake Bay estuary. Without the volunteers the project would have never made a difference, today cordgrass from hand planted plots, drift plantings have made somewhat of a comeback. Francis Lightfoot Lee (October 14, 1734 – January 11, 1797) was a member of the House of Burgesses in the Colony of Virginia. As an active protester regarding issues such as the Stamp Act, Lee helped move the colony in the direction of independence from Britain. Lee was a delegate to the Virginia Conventions and the Continental Congress. He was a signer of the Articles of Confederation and the Declaration of Independence as a representative of Virginia.
