Meramec Caverns is a classic Route 66 tourist attraction located in Stanton, Missouri. We hadn't been there since we were kids, so our childhood memories of it drew us to revisit it! Meramec Caverns, referred to as Jesse James Hideout and America's Cave, offers a 1 hour and 20 minute walking tour of the huge limestone cave system. There are many other thincgs to do on the property besides the cave tour, making this a great family-friendly vacation destination!

A short tour around the Meramec Caverns in Stanton, MO on Historic Route 66.
Meramec Caverns is an 4.6-mile cavern system in the Ozarks, near Stanton, Missouri, USA. It was formed from the erosion of large limestone deposits over millions of years. Pre-Columbian Native American artifacts have been found in the caverns. Currently the caverns are a tourist attraction, with more than fifty billboards along Interstate 44. It is considered one of the primary attractions along former U.S. Highway 66. Meramec Caverns is the most-visited cave in Missouri the some 150,000 visitors annually. Meramec Caverns is ranked #171 on CaverBob.com's USA Long Cave list.

Three days of fun from July 3-5, 2009. The last part of our 3 day tour ends at The Meramec Caverns in Stanton, MO. An hour drive from St. Louis. The cave and the lightings are amazing. Tip: if you plan on going there, be sure that your cameras and videocams are all fully charged.

Video of Celine Dion's 'God Bless America' being played in the 'Theater Room' of Meramec Caverns. This was certainly unique - been to many caverns but this experience was a first! The movie was projected on a massive sheet wall of formations formed during the past 78 million years, which the cave calls its stage curtain and which is also used for displaying this light and sound show called Greatest Show Under the Earth.

Meramec Caverns and Meramec State Park Staton, MO
Meramec Caverns and State Park are beautiful places! We got to go enjoy a visit to both this past summer. Meramec Caverns is one of Missouri's best cave tours! It's know as Missouri's buried treasure. There is a restaurant, and gift shop at the cave. Meramec River is located right beside the cave, and you can take canoe tours, or Riverboat rides down the river. We unfortunately did not have time to do either of those. The Riverboat is one of the favorite attractions here. The cost is $10 for adults and $7 for children 5-11.
Our favorite part of the Cave tour was the tribute and singing of God Bless America. It's a must see! The famous outlaw, Jesse James, has some history in this cave as well. The cost for the Cave tour is $22 for adults, $12 for children age 5-11, and children 4 and under are free.
Meramec Caverns is open every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas. Guided-walking tours depart every 20-30 minutes starting at 9:00 am. Cavern tour takes one hour and twenty minutes to complete covering 1 ¼ mile round trip.
Meramec State Park is very pretty! It's a fairly large state park. It has over 13 miles of hiking trails, a great campground, lots of activities, and plenty of picnicking sites to choose from. You can also tour the Fisher Cave in the park with only hand held lights. Adults are $10, Teens 13-17 are $8, Children 6-12 are $6, and 5 and under are free.
The visitor center provides a lot of information on the park itself and can tell you more about the area. I would recommend starting there first. The park attendant is the one who suggested our hike we took.

We went to Meramec Caverns in Stanton, Missouri today but the campsite's were closed for the season. Guess we will have to come back in the spring.
After years of working 60 to 70 hours a week and never taking a vacation, Carolyn and I decided to quite our job and begin our full time RV’ing. We bought a 1970 Starcraft pop-up camper and are in the process of fixing it up. We may buy something more substantial later but we are quite excited starting our adventure in this pop-up.

Fantastic Caverns is a show cave located in Springfield, Missouri. Fantastic Caverns is the only cave in North America to offer a completely ride-through tour, which lasts 55 minutes and is held in a Jeep-drawn tram. The trams drive along the path left behind by an ancient underground river.
The cavern was discovered by John Knox and his hunting dog in 1862. Knox did not want the cave to be exploited by the Union or Confederate governments as a possible source of saltpeter, so he kept the cave's existence quiet until 1867. Knox put an advertisement in the Springfield paper for someone to explore the cave, and it was first explored on February 14, 1867. On February 27, almost two weeks later, the Springfield Women's Athletic Club explored the cave. These twelve ladies are considered the first explorers of the cave, since they carved their names into the rock as graffiti and are mentioned in an article published in the Springfield Tri-Weekly Patriot newspaper. The cave was renamed Fantastic Caverns in the 1950s.
The caverns were used as a speakeasy during the Prohibition years and hosted music concerts during the 1950s and 1960s. The shows were broadcast on KGBX radio in the 1970s.
The temperature inside Fantastic Caverns is about 60 °F (15 °C) year-round. In the winter and fall, billboards advertise that the cave is a warm 60 degrees, while in the summer and spring, billboards advertise the caverns to be a cool 60 degrees. The cave hosts over 100,000 visitors a year.
Fantastic Caverns is 6 miles from Jefferson Avenue 562-foot Footbridge and near Ritter Springs Park.

Meramec Caverns | Truly Remarkable Life
Today our Truly Remarkable Life took us to Meramec Caverns in Stanton, Missouri. After an initial derailment, we finally made it to see these spectacular caverns. We also discovered that there is a lot of fun stuff here like zip-lining, camping, boating on the Meramec River and a very pretty park to hang out with the family for a picnic lunch, or you could just grab an ice cream cone on your way out of the cool gift shop! We highly recommend going to explore this privately owned park and attractions for a full day. For those seeking a longer get away, there is the Meramec Caverns motel and the park does allow tent and RV camping - check out americascave.com/lodging.php. All in all, it was a great day! We hope our adventure through these stunning caverns entices you to come see them as well!
