The Mercedes-Benz Stadium is a multi-purpose retractable roof stadium located in Atlanta, Georgia. The home of the Atlanta Falcons of the National Football League (NFL) and the Atlanta United FC of Major League Soccer , it replaced the now-demolished Georgia Dome, the Falcons' home stadium from 1992 through 2016. Mercedes-Benz stadium holds the record of the world's largest halo board and is one of few American football stadiums with retractable roofs.
The stadium is owned by the state of Georgia through the Georgia World Congress Center Authority, and operated by AMB Group, the parent organization of the Falcons and Atlanta United. The total cost was estimated at $1.6 billion, as of June 2016. The stadium officially opened on August 26, 2017 with a Falcons preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals, despite the retractable roof system being incomplete at the time. Work on the retractable roof was completed on July 14, 2018.

• The stadium roof may appear to rotate open but it’s an optical illusion, the roof opens by the movement of eight “petals” that slide open in a straight line.
• Each of the moving petals cantilever approximately 200 feet inwards towards the center of the stadium
• The moveable petal structures are powered by eight mechanized “bogies”
• In the closed position the petals lock together to form a water tight seal.

ATLANTA - Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the home of Super Bowl LIII, showcased its one-of-a-kind retractable roof on Wednesday.
Construction crews have been working to complete the final phase of construction on the roof in order for it to be fully operational for the Falcons' 2018 football season and next year's Super Bowl. Now that construction is complete, the stadium showed off the roof Wednesday afternoon with a full opening and closing demonstration.

How does the Mercedes-Benz Stadium work?
The Mercedes-Benz Stadium is unlike any other stadium in the world! This video goes through in detail all the different levels, the halo board and retractable roof.
The stadium is home of the Atlanta Falcons NFL football team and the the chosen venue for the 2019 Super Bowl LIII (53). It opened in August of 2017. It has a retractable roof with 8 petals each weighing 500 tons each. It can open or close in only 8 minutes so that bad weather doesn't have to ruin the game. The stadium has a 360 degree halo board so it can be clearly seen from any seat in the stadium. There's also private suites, clubs, and plenty of food choices at decent prices.

The roof design included eight triangular translucent panels, that when opened would create the illusion of a bird's wings extended. Surrounding the opening of the roof would be a halo video board that would enclose the playing surface, stretching from one of the 10-yard lines to the other and then curving around the end zones to complete the oval.Each of the eight panels operates on two straight, parallel rails; one rail is responsible for moving the panel while the other rail stabilizes the panel. Mark Silvera, president of Uni-Systems Engineering, explains that closing the roof takes slightly less time than opening the roof, since the roof has to disengage the seals at the start of the opening procedure and slow down towards the end to prevent the panels from getting derailed.
