Mercer Diner, Mercer, PA 1957
You can imagine the great aroma of coffee, hot roast beef sandwiches with mashed potatoes and gravy, and apple pie! The great Mercer Diner was a popular landmark for travelers from Erie to Pittsburgh for decades. Located right in the heart of Mercer just a half-block from the courthouse, it did a great business from early morning till late at night. Sadly it grew old, was sold, dismantled and moved to Germany and for a few years was still selling good diner food until it caught fire and was destroyed. The closest place like this old diner would be Donna's Diner in downtown Sharon, PA.
Song: Jim Dandy (To The Rescue) by Lavern Baker. (Well, until now I didn't know this was sung by a woman... guess I'm still learning) Released in 1956, it reached the top of the R&B chart and #17 on the pop charts in the U.S. It was named one of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll and was ranked #343 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Mercer County Sheriff Race Heating Up
Mercer County Sheriff Republican candidate David Jones is accusing current Sheriff John Kemler of being a double dipper.
Sheriff Kemler collects an annual pension from the Police and Firemen's Retirement System Fund on top of his compensation as sheriff, which nets him over $230,000 per year from the state.
Jones is vowing to surrender his $91,000 pension from serving as a major in the state police if he is elected.
“In this current situation with the Mercer County Sheriff, he retired and 30 days later was rehired in the same position in which he left. The only difference was, now that he's officially retired, he was able to collect his $85,000 pension and then also collect the same salary that he had been collecting,” Jones said.
