Something's up at the Mercer County Park Commission. Investigators from the New Jersey State Attorney General's office raided park headquarters at the old Hunt House in Rosedale Park in Hopewell and the county tennis center in West Windsor. The county wouldn't say much on the matter. A statement from Mercer County's communications office acknowledges that the raid happened and that the AG's office is looking into possible violations -- official misconduct, corruption and theft by extortion statutes. Nobody's known to have been arrested and no charges have been filed. But it's not a good look.
Whenever this kind of thing hits the news and gets in the public it's never good on any administration, former Mercer County Executive Bob Prunetti said. And it's difficult for any elected official, as much as they try to be above-board -- transparent -- it's difficult to control every facet of the government that you're running.
Mercer's corruption record is sad. The last mayor of Trenton, Tony Mack, is in jail. The last mayor of Hamilton, John Bencivengo, recently got out of jail. The Mercer County Park Commission is known to be a place where the politically connected can get work regardless of circumstance. A local congresswoman's son convicted of armed robbery? Hired. A county freeholder's kid convicted of third-degree murder? Hired.
A park commisioner told NJ.com that the focus of the investigation is on the nonprofit Friends of Mercer County Parks. But the AG's office won't confirm or deny that or anything else about the story. Where there's smoke there's often fire -- though -- and Mercer County has had fires in the past. We'll see where this goes.

The Robbinsville Township Fire Department shared a morning of reflection at the Town Center Lake Memorial Tree on Lake Drive to honor Robbinsville resident Pamela Gaff and all of those lost on September 11, 2001.
A wreath was placed at the plaque of Mrs. Gaff, who was a Robbinsville/Washington Township resident and an employee of the Aon Corp. in the World Trade Center.
Thank you to the residents, the Robbinsville Township Police Department, Mayor Fried, Township Committee members, and those from Township Administration who came out to join us in remembering those we lost on this day 18 years ago. IAFF Local #3786
