Mesa Arch Sunrise | Island in the Sky, Canyonlands
Raise your hand if you would wake up at 5am, drive for an hour, hike half a mile, and then wait in below freezing weather for 30 minutes, to take a picture? ????
Check out what it takes to get that epic Mesa Arch at Sunrise shot. It's a lot of work, but it's completely worth it! After Mesa Arch, we explored the Grand View Point Overlook trail in the Island in the Sky section of Canyonlands. Also amazing.
Btw, nothing in this video was color-graded or color-corrected in any way. The arch glows like that for real.
Southern Utah has some of the most amazing National Parks, and we were so excited to explore Canyonlands. We started our trip exploring Arches National Park for two days. If you haven't seen the video from Arches, check it out here:
Thanks again to Adam and Lindsey for letting us feature them and their kids in this video.
**Fee Info**
Ok, so I talked to the people at the visitor center and if you're planning on visiting Mesa Arch in the summer, you definitely have to pay. Plan on arriving even earlier (not only to get a good spot) so you can stop in the Visitor Center and pay the entry fee. Right now, that's $30. We recommend buying the annual National Parks pass for $80.
If you want to do this for free, you'll have to do it in the winter. They told me the entry booth stays closed throughout the winter and the visitor center doesn't open until about 10am. But I am NOT recommending you not paying. You should have a parks pass anyways, or do what we did and go back later to explore more (and pay then).

Virtual Hike: Mesa Arch Trail in Canyonlands National Park, Utah
Mesa Arch is one of the most iconic sights in all on Canyonlands National Park. Located near Moab, Utah, Canyonlands is a very close neighbor to Arches National Park (located across town). Being so close, the two parks make a great weekend trip for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts looking to take in some of Utah's most breathtaking vistas and stunning red rock formations.
Join Chimani for the first in a series of Virtual Hikes. The virtual hike of Mesa Arch Trail to the arch is a three-minute sample of the terrain, environment, and overall landscape that one can expect to encounter when setting out from the parking lot.
The trail itself a relatively easy hike. With a few moderate inclines and man-made steps, the half-mile hike can be done in a half-hour or less, but it is not to be rushed. Along the well-maintained trail are a variety of trees, plants, and cacti to stop and enjoy.
The suspense increases along the hike as the trail seems to intentionally hide Mesa Arch from view until the final few feet. The stunning formation comes into view with a seemingly never-ending backdrop of red rock canyons, pillars, cliffs, and mountains.
It was mid-afternoon when the Chimani team visited Mesa Arch in the video, however it is uncommon for there to be this few people on the trail or at the arch. On this day, temperatures were extremely high, keeping most visitors near their vehicles, park facilities, and shorter trails. On a typical day, one should plan to hike to Mesa Arch earlier in the morning or towards the evening to avoid crowds, although sunrise and sunset are popular times to visit.

Canyonlands National Park - Mesa Arch
A quick hike (honestly too short to be called a hike) to Mesa Arch in Canyonlands National Park in Moab, Utah, followed by some crappy video of a 4x4 trail I found on my way out of Moab.

Mesa Arch Trail | Canyonlands National Park Moab Utah
Mesa Arch is very beautiful. Its one of the few arches that you can get right next to.The trail leading to the arch is about a half a mile each way. Its a relatively easy hike. Nothing strenuous at all. At the time we were there the trail was very busy. From the view side the arch only looks about 12 to 15 feet tall, but from the canyon side you can see the arch is very tall. This is a must see when you visit Canyonlands National Park.
Junior Rangers Explore Canyonlands National Park - Mesa Arch - Utah
Our little junior rangers have accumulated quite a collection of badges and patches from our three months of travel in the west! In October, we had the time to explore Canyonlands National Park. We loved the Island in the Sky section of the park, where the famous Mesa Arch and Grand Overlook are located.

Dynamics of Mesa Arch, Canyonlands National Park
The four primary resonance frequencies of Mesa Arch in Canyonlands National Park are shown in this video. These are used to monitor whether there are any changes over time in the internal structure of the arch. This is a new way to monitor the health of this and other arches and bedrock structures, say the authors of a paper in GRL by Starr, et al. (2015). The method can potentially determine whether an arch has sustained recent internal damage and whether it is in danger of collapsing.

Arches National Park - America's Great Sights
A beautiful Arches National Park sight-seeing trip with the Bro'd Trip
Watch the outdoor videos I love most here:
Don't miss an adventure! Consider subscribing:
Though I have visited Moab, Utah several times, I didn't make it to Arches National Park until really recently. This video captures my first tour of the park with Justin and Adam from the Bro'd Trip. Arches is incredible and it's hard to believe that a landscape could be naturally sculpted like Arches is. The park seemed pretty small compared to other national parks I have been to, but it certainly was worth it. We got in for free for the 100th anniversary of the national parks service.
As far as the Bro'd trip goes, I wanted to make this video for them to help them get exposure. Personally I believe they are producing entertaining videos that show some of the coolest places in the United States. Their YouTube channel is fairly new, so I'm hoping to help people find their content. I feel they deserve it. I haven't made it through a vlog of theirs without laughing, and that's awesome. Please check out their channel, drop a comment letting them know I sent you, and if you like what you see, please subscribe. It's always nice knowing you're producing content for an audience that is waiting to watch your next video.
Here's the link to their channel:
You can find links to their other social properties in their channel art.
I really wanted to promote Justin and Adam's channel, because I like what they're doing. So if this video seems like a promotion, that's because it is. However, they did not pay me to make this or provide any other incentive to make this video. In fact, they didn't even ask me to make it. They're doing a great job, I wanted to support them, and our visit together to Arches seemed like a great time to spread the word about the cool adventures they're choosing to share with us on their channel. As my channel develops, I want to take opportunities to try to help people out who are doing cool things. Of course, it's up to all of you as to whether or not videos like this actually do help. While it's not necessary to have a big channel to make movies and have fun, a few subscribers definitely help. I hope you'll accept my invitation to virtually join Justin and Adam's year-long journey living the van life. I did meet up with them for a work-related trip, but shot this video on my own time on the weekend.
As always, thank you for the support and thank you for watching. :) - Chris

Arches and Canyonlands National Parks In One Day!
We took a spontaneous trip to Arches and Canyonlands National Parks over St. Patricks day with our two little ones. This was the perfect little trip and getting out of the cold weather to spend a day in the desert was amazing.
Utah is a special place, having 5 National Parks in the state. We hiked to several of the arches in Arches National Park and to Mesa Arch in Canyonlands National Park.

Sunrise at Mesa Arch in Canyonlands National Park, Utah - July 2014
This video is a combination of GoPro video and still footage from my visit to Mesa Arch. There is no way a photo or video can capture the majestic scene found there. You have to be there to fully appreciate it but hopefully I can provide you some small sense of awe with this video.
Please let me know what you think in the comments.
