The Metropolis Building or Edificio Metrópolis is an office building in Madrid, Spain, at the corner of the Calle de Alcalá and Gran Vía. Inaugurated in 1911, it was designed by Jules and Raymond Février for the insurance company La Unión y el Fénix. It is currently owned by Metrópolis Seguros.

After La Unión y el Fénix acquired the ground in 1905, they launched an international competition for the opportunity to design their building. Among French and Spanish architects, Jules and Raymond Février won, and construction started in 1907. For its construction, five homes had to be demolished between two streets: Calle de Alcalá and Calle del Caballero de Gracia. At that time, the Gran Via was still in design phase. In 1910 construction was finished, and on 21 January 1911 the building was inaugurated.

Metrópolis Seguros put a great deal of effort restoring the building. They understood that it was one of Madrid's landmarks and should be maintained. This went in a few steps but works started right after Metrópolis Seguros bought the building.

In 1988 the facade was fully cleaned, together with the roof, basements and central courtyard. In November 1995 the delicate task of restoring the windows of the main staircase were done by the original artists, Maurnejean Vidrieras Artisticas and Antonio Herraiz, SA, retaining their original appearance.

It is commonly assumed Gran Vía starts at the Edificio Metrópolis. However, its real address is Calle de Alcalá 39. The first building at the beginning of Gran Vía is the Edificio Grassy.

Madrid is the capital and largest city of Spain. The population of the city is roughly 3.3 million (as of December 2009); the entire population of the metropolitan area (urban area and suburbs) is calculated to be 6,386,932. While Madrid possesses a modern infrastructure, it has preserved the look and feel of many of its historic neighbourhoods and streets. Its landmarks include the huge Royal Palace of Madrid; the Teatro Real (Royal theatre) with its restored 1850 Opera House; the Buen Retiro park, founded in 1631; the imposing 19th-century National Library building (founded in 1712) containing some of Spain's historical archives; an archaeological museum; and three superb art museums: Prado Museum, which hosts one of the finest art collections in the world, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, a museum of modern art, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, housed in the renovated Villahermosa Palace.

Nº 10.- TEMPLE OF DEBOD
The Temple of Debod is the oldest building in Madrid, although it was not built in our city but in ancient Nubia, in southern Egypt, more than 2.200 years ago.

Nº 9.- PLAZA DE LA VILLA
In the Plaza de la Villa is the oldest civil building built in Madrid, it is the Tower and House of the Lujanes, a palace house of the XV century, Gothic-Mudejar style.
There are also two other emblematic buildings: the Casa de Cisneros, a Renaissance palace from the XVI century, and the Casa de la Villa, a baroque palace from the XVII century.

The ‘Puerta de Alcalá’ is one of the most popular symbols of Madrid. In addition to the monumental function, it served as gateway to the city until just a century and a half ago.
It is the first arch of triumph built in Europe, after the fall of the Roman Empire.
In neoclassical style, it was built in the XVIII century by direct commission of Carlos III.

The ‘Gran Vía’ is one of the most emblematic streets of Madrid.
Started in 1910, it was settled, The ‘Great Way’ is the main artery of the heart of Madrid. It has many iconic buildings: Metropolis, Telefónica, Capitol and so on.
Nº 6.- CIBELES
The Plaza de Cibeles is one of the most well-known squares in Spain. It is currently located in the Palacio de Comunicaciones - ‘The Palace of Communications’, a beautiful eclectic building from the beginning of the 20th century. Current City hall.
In the center of the square is the famous Fuente de Cibeles ‘Cibeles Fountain’, which is the first of the five mythological fountains that form the Prado Hall, commissioned by Carlos III.
Nº 5.- PLAZA MAYOR (MAYOR SQUARE OF MADRID)
The Plaza Mayor of Madrid suffered 3 frightful fires, in the last of them only the ‘House of Bakery’ was saved, which served as a model for the reconstruction of the square.
The Plaza Mayor of Madrid during 2017 commemorates its IV Centenary, being in 1617 when it began to build, 400 years ago.
Nº 4.- PUERTA DEL SOL (GATE OF THE SUN)
The Puerta del Sol is the heart of Madrid. Social meeting point in which life flows at any time of day or night.
From its beginnings in century XV, in this place have been directed some of the most important events of the history and the Spanish life.
This statue, the Statue of the Bear and the Madroño is famous for alluding to the official shield of the city of Madrid.
Also In Puerta del Sol we find the ‘Real Casa de Correos’ royal house of mail, where the locals meet to hear the chimes every new year.
Nº 3.- PALACIO REAL (ROYAL PALACE DE MADRID)
The Royal Palace and its surroundings are one of the must-see in Madrid.
The majestic building that we can contemplate today, dates from the middle of the XVIII century.
The neoclassical style clearly shows the taste for geometric and proportionate forms, typical of the architecture of enlightened despotism.
It is one of the largest palaces in the world.
It is currently open to the public as a museum.
It is surrounded by beautiful gardens (Campo de Moro, Sabatini Gardens and Gardens of the Plaza de Oriente).
From its surroundings we can enjoy spectacular sunsets.
Nº 2.- RETIRO PARK
Parque del Retiro is one of the most pleasant urban parks in the world.
It is ideal for pleasant walks, sunbathing and even paddling in the center of the city.
This park had its origin in the seventeenth century, as the second residence and place of rest Of King Philip IV. Places of recreation as peculiar as the Grand Lake of Retiro are iconic.

Calle Gran Via and Plaza de Cibeles, Madrid - Spain 4K Travel Channel

Calle Gran Via is Madrid's magnificent shopping street is. The broad boulevard cuts a lane from the Plaza de Espana in the northwest of Madrid up to the Plaza de Cibeles in the east of the city. Prominent and the highest building is the Edificio Telefónica, about halfway. The street is lined by hotels, shops, cinemas and theaters. The partly monumental houses with their beautiful facades radiate wealth and also architectural imagination. Particularly the splendid statues on many roofs of the buildings are remarkable, such as the Victoria installed on the Edificio Metropolis in 1972.
The traffic usually streams continually through this street, but suddenly everything was different. No cars and the Madrilenians quickly discovered the street as a leisure area for cycling, photography or just for walking.
We quickly recognized the reason. The police cordoned off the street and in the distance we could see a demonstration. With loud slogans the participants moved along the street. A Spanish woman tried to explain us the reason for the demo, but due to our lack of language skills, we could only understand that the demonstration was directed against an auction house.
Thanks to the demo, we were lucky to experience the Plaza de Cibeles almost without traffic which granted us good possibilities for filming. In the middle of the square is the Fuente de Cibeles, dedicated to the Greek goddess Cybele. The fountain was built in 1782. The square is surrounded by the buildings Palacio de Buenavista (Headquarters of the Army), the Palacio de Linares and the magnificent Palacio de Comunicaciones (seat of the Municipality), which since 2011 is called Palacio de Cibeles. In the background is the Puerta de Alcalá, the former city gate, which we had seen already once.
We go on to the Plaza de las Cortes with the monumental fountain Fuente de Neptuno. At the corner there is the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza. We leave it on the right and continue along the Congreso de los Diputados to the Puerta del Sol.

Die Calle Gran Via ist Madrids prächtigste Einkaufsstraße. Die breite Straße bildet eine Schneise von der Plaza de Espana im Nordwesten Madrids zur Plaza de Cibeles im Osten der Stadt . Markantes und höchstes Gebäude ist das Edificio Telefónica, ungefähr auf halber Strecke. Die Straße ist gesäumt von Hotels, Geschäften, Kinos und Theatern. Die teils schon monumentalen Häuser mit ihren prachtvollen Fassaden strahlen Reichtum aber auch architektonische Fantasie aus. Besonders die prunkvollen Statuen auf vielen der Gebäudedächern sind sehenswert, wie die 1972 installierte Victoria auf dem Edificio Metropolis.
Normalerweise strömt unablässig der Verkehr durch diese Straße, doch plötzlich war alles ganz anders. Kein Auto kam und rasch entdeckten die Madrider die Straße als Freizeitfläche, zum Radfahren, Fotografieren oder auch nur zum Spazierengehen.
Rasch erkannten auch wir den Grund. Die Polizei riegelte die Straße ab und in der Ferne konnten wir eine Demonstration erkennen. Mit lauten Parolen zog sie die Straße entlang. Eine Spanierin versuchte uns den Sinn der Demo zu erklären, doch dank unserer mangelnden Sprachkenntnisse konnten wir nur verstehen, dass die Demo gegen ein Auktionshaus gerichtet sei.
Durch die Demo hatten wir das Glück die Plaza de Cibeles fast Verkehrslos zu erleben, was uns gute Möglichkeiten zum Filmen einräumte. In der Mitte des Platzes befindet sich der Fuente de Cibeles, der der griechischen Göttin Kybele gewidmet ist. Der Brunnen wurde 1782 errichtet. Umgeben ist der Platz von den Gebäuden Palacio de Buenavista (Hauptquartier des Heeres, dem Palacio de Linares und dem prächtigen Palacio de Comunicaciones (Sitz der Stadtverwaltung), der seit 2011 Palacio de Cibeles heißt. Im Hintergrund ist wieder die Puerta de Alcalá, das ehemalige Stadttor, zu sehen, der wir bereits einmal begegnet waren.
Wir gehen weiter zur Plaza de las Cortes mit dem monumentalen Brunnen Fuente de Neptuno. Am Eck befindet sich das Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza. Wir lassen es rechts liegen und gehen weiter, am Congreso de los Diputados vorbei, zum Puerta del Sol.

from our day trip to madrid last summer. what a beautiful city, with such stunning architecture. perhaps one of spain's less touristy cities, but i really would recommend visiting. one of my favourite ways to see a new city is on a bus tour, and this one DEFINITELY didn't disappoint!
