Mechrey Floating Village
Mechrey village is one of the floating communities, located at the edge of Tone Sap Lake away from Siem Reap town about 25km. Amazing lives on lake and fishing activities are so wonderful that drive it attractive, curious and to be explored. Getting the private sheltered boat ride is the best way to explore how people’s lives work and witness their daily activities, including fishing, schooling, selling their products by rowing their dugout around. See the great lake and witness its ecosystem.

Floating Village Meychrey in March 2019
It loaked 35km Southwest of Siem Reap City. You will need to boat ride around 1.5h for round trip. It's touristy like other floating village. You can see also real local village lifestyle.
Floating Village, Siem Reap, Cambodia.
A 6 minute ride through the floating village in Cambodia with a short clip of our ride around the Gulf of Thailand, which reminded me a lot of Mobile Bay.. One of the most incredible things I have ever seen. The raining coming in really made this so much more surreal. At 3 minutes in our driver stops and gets what I assume is dinner, which is a fish hanging out of a plastic bag.

Cambodia: Siem Reap - The Tonle Sap Lake Cruise and the Floating Villages
A short film that was shot during my recent trip to Siem Reap in Cambodia. In this short 3-minute film, I take you on a short trip down the Mekong through the flooded forest and the floating villages to the Tonle Sap lake.
This was shot entirely handheld using a DJI Osmo X3.
In November 2017, I took a short break to travel up to Siem Reap in Cambodia. I had heard that the Sonle Tap Cruise on the Mekong was one of the things to do. After landing in Siem Reap and checking into the hotel, I made my way to the boats. I paid the US$26 to get my ticket, expecting that I would share a seat with several other people on a boat. I discovered that the $26 got me the whole boat and driver to myself! My pilot was a young Khmer woman with her child, who was taking in his surroundings like it was another day in life.
The weather on the day was somewhat inclement. It was sunny at the time that I boarded.
This is a true Asian experience. The boat would seat 12 people comfortably. There were a couple of life vests on the seats that probably wouldn’t offer much safety in the event of the boat capsizing. The seats were wet (fortunately, I was carrying a towel with me and wiped them down).
We made our 30 minute ride to the launch point for the flooded forest and the floating village. We passed several boats along the way, and were in turn, passed by several other. As we arrived at the launch point, the heavens opened up and it bucketed down. Traffic came to a halt on the river as we waited for the storm to pass. 20 minutes later, it was business as usual.
I met a young American woman, Ashley, and we shared a small boat that took us through the flooded forest and the floating village. The weather had cleared for the time, though it did drizzle very lightly as we gently cruised through the forest. As we made our way back to the launch point, I boarded my boat that took me further out to the Sonle Tap lake. I made it there at sunset. After briefly circling a few boats there, we turned to head back.
Another storm approached. The sun had set at this stage and it was beginning to get dark fast. My pilot lifted her child and placed him on one of the seats. She didn’t bother putting a life jacket on him. She pulled the side tarps down to shield us from the weather as the rain began to get heavier.
Very soon, it was pouring. The tarps didn’t do much in the way of shield us from getting wet.
As we made our way further along the river, I realized that my boat did not have any lights, and very soon, it was pitch dark. The only light came from the occasional lightning bolt, and other boats that passed us by. My pilot found her spot behind one of the other boats that had lights, and followed it, getting us safely back to where we started from.
In spite of what may have seemed like a hair raising experience, I was surprisingly calm throughout my boat ride. I was completely soaked when I disembarked from my boat, but completely relaxed with a great sense of calm within me.
Every time I visit remote parts of Asia, it gives me a great sense of gratitude for the things that I have in life.

Tonle Sap Floating Village, Siem Reap, Cambodia
Tonle Sap “Great Lake”, the largest freshwater lake in the Southeast Asia and is an ecological hot spot that was designated as a UNESCO biosphere in 1997. Travelers can visit Tonle Sap floating communities in Kompong Chhnang if they travel from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap, or visit it at Chung Kneas or Mechrey villages but Mechrey is more suitable because the journey goes passing beautiful rice paddies which is considered as the best landscape of all. All provide fantastic sightseeing when the boat cruising close to floating communities where you can see a lot of fishing activities come to local life as well as you can unlock the livelihoods of people living in the floating houses.

Kompong Khleang - A floating village on Tonle Sap Lake in Siem Reap, Cambodia
Kampong Kleang is one of the largest but least-visited villages on the Tonle Sap Lake, Kompong Khleang, about 55km from Siem Reap. It’s population of 10,000 all make a living from the fishing industry. We explore the canals (wet season) or streets (dry season) of this incredible town. In the wet season, the houses appear to be floating, as water laps at the verandas, but in the dry season towering stilts are revealed, the houses almost like wooden skyscrapers. You can hire a boat and cruise into the open water of the great lake to see a small floating village and learn some more about this incredible natural flood barrier.

Cambodia Travel Part 7: The Unspoiled Floating Village in Siem Reap
Visited the unspoiled floating village of Kampong Phluk. I feel sad and happy at the same time for the children there. I'm sad because the extreme poor living condition they are in. I'm happy because they are simple and genuinely happy people. Thanks to Beyond Unique Escapes for organizing this trip. I truly enjoyed speaking to the children at the village.
