A Tour of the Indigenous Island of Mezcala in Lake Chapala, Mexico
Go with Billy to visit a small island in the middle of Lake Chapala where the Spanish never conquered the native peoples. There is a prison, called the Mexican Alcatraz prison where the prisoners couldn't escape. See the sacrifice circle on the island where natives gave thanks for the peace of the island, and the torture place where prisoners were sent. Other than these things, it's a beautiful view (!) MEZCALA, ISLA DE LA RESISTENCIA
We CAN'T Believe THIS is in the Middle of LAKE CHAPALA!
It's hard to believe this island in the middle of Lake Chapala has such crazy history. We were shocked!
►Get Tangerine perks!
The town of Mezcala is approximately 40 minutes away from Ajijic, Jalisco. When we arrived, we easily found a boatsman to take us to Isla de Mezcala for 300 pesos (for 3 people). We were allowed to stay on the island for one hour at that price, or pay more for additional time. A tour guide showed us around Isla de Mezcala, sharing the shocking Mexican history. (He did not set a price for his services, just asked for whatever tip we felt was appropriate.) One of the many pieces of history Jose shared was that there was a clash between the indigenous people, the Spanish, and the Mexicans living on the north shore of Lake Chapala, Mexico during the 1800s. Isla de Mezcala, also known as Isla de Presidio, truly has endured a lot over the course of Mexican history.
If you're looking for what to do at Lake Chapala or Ajijic things to do, we highly recommend this experience. It was very interesting to learn the history of the island and tour the fortress, prison, church, and other historic structures. Our guide, Jose even found some ancient artifacts while we were on the tour. In Jalisco, Mexico 2018 history remains!

Lake Chapala - Gateway - Guadalajara
A magical city full of magnetic energy - maybe it's because it was founded on Valentine's Day in 1542 or the mix of the old and the new, blending seamlessly together - that makes Guadalajara so magical! Guadalajara is the birthplace of the sombrero, the Mexican Hat Dance, cowboy-style rodeos (charreadas) and of course, the world-renowned Mariachi bands. Affectionately called 'The Pearl of the West, Guadalajara is the capital of Jalisco and is one of the largest urban centers in North America. Mexico's second largest city is over 450 years old and has over 4 million inhabitants. This serenely beautiful and stately colonial city sits on a high plateau more than 5,000 feet above sea level. It's a city of parks and fountains. Guadalajara is a great place to immerse yourself in the Mexican culture. You can ride a charming horse-drawn carriage, enjoy the famous Brass Statues by Alejandro Colunga, visit the famous Hospicio Cabanas with its awe-inspiring murals by Jose Clemente Orozco or tour the spectacular Teatro Degollado for some toe-tapping, breath-taking, heart-pounding fun!. Guadalajara also has an international airport, which means you're a plane ride away from some of the world's best beaches as well as Mexico Magic Towns (Pueblo Magicos). Guadalajara is a well-connected city to take a day trip to the plantations and distilleries in Tequila and it's only a 3-hour drive to the Pacific beach cities of Puerto Vallarta, Manzanillo and Barra de Navidad on new toll roads by luxury buses or by car. With the opening of the Guadalajara-Mexico City superhighway, it's only four hours to Mexico City - linking these two major cities as never before. Guadalajara has world class shopping options as well as most of the businesses you're used to from back 'home'. Guadalajara also has more down-home and upscale restaurants than you'll know what to do with. Guadalajara is bursting with history and culture. Make sure Guadalajara is on your bucket list and experience the excitement yourself!

Virgin Of Zapopan ( Protector of Lake Chapala )
In 1538 Franciscan Fray Miguel Bolonia founded the city of Chapala. He built a hermitage on Chapala's highest hill, Cerro San Miguel, where he lived until his death. He built another hermitage on the Island of Mezcala, here native children were given religious instruction.
In 1548, a church was built of adobe and grass, and named San Francisco after the order of the padres. A hospital was constructed, adjoining the church.
By 1550, Chapala had a population of 825 married persons and 349 children. About this time, a scholar from Spain, studying Indian cultures of the Chapala shores, found that each lakeside community seemed to have it's own language. Probably, the lack of transportation (the rough dugout fishing canoes were not capable of crossing the lake) had prevented a common language from developing.
