Driving Downtown - Miami Beach Florida USA - Episode 28.
Starting Point: Abbott Avenue/Indian Creek Drive .
Miami Beach is a coastal resort city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. It was incorporated on March 26, 1915.[4] The municipality is located on a variety of natural and man-made barrier islands between the Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bay, the latter of which separates the Beach from Miami. The neighborhood of South Beach, comprising the southernmost 2.5 square miles (6.5 km2) of Miami Beach, along with downtown Miami and the Port of Miami, collectively form the commercial center of South Florida.[5] As of the 2010 census, Miami Beach had a total population of 87,779.[6] It has been one of America's pre-eminent beach resorts since the early 20th century.
In 1979, Miami Beach's Art Deco Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Art Deco District is the largest collection of Art Deco architecture in the world[7] and comprises hundreds of hotels, apartments and other structures erected between 1923 and 1943. Mediterranean, Streamline Moderne and Art Deco are all represented in the District. The Historic District is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the East, Lenox Court on the West, 6th Street on the South and Dade Boulevard along the Collins Canal to the North. The movement to preserve the Art Deco District's architectural heritage was led by former interior designer Barbara Capitman, who now has a street in the District named in her honor.
Modern American history
South Beach (also known as SoBe, or simply the Beach), the area from Biscayne Street (also known as South Pointe Drive) one block south of 1st Street to about 23rd Street, is one of the more popular areas of Miami Beach. Topless sunbathing by women is illegal, but is officially tolerated on South Beach.[11] Before the TV show Miami Vice helped make the area popular, SoBe was under urban blight, with vacant buildings and a high crime rate. Today, it is considered one of the richest commercial areas on the beach, yet poverty and crime still remain in some places near the area.[12]
Miami Beach, particularly Ocean Drive of what is now the Art Deco District, was also featured prominently in the 1983 feature film Scarface and the 1996 comedy The Birdcage.
The New World Symphony Orchestra is based in Miami Beach, under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas.
Lincoln Road, running east-west parallel between 16th and 17th Streets, is a nationally known spot for outdoor dining, bicycling, rollerblading and shopping and features and galleries of well known designers, artists and photographers such as Romero Britto, Peter Lik, and Jonathan Adler
The arts
Each December, the City of Miami Beach hosts Art Basel Miami Beach, one of the largest art shows in the United States. Art Basel Miami Beach, the sister event to the Art Basel event held each June in Basel, Switzerland, combines an international selection of top galleries with a program of special exhibitions, parties and crossover events featuring music, film, architecture and design. Exhibition sites are located in the city's Art Deco District, and ancillary events are scattered throughout the greater Miami metropolitan area.
Miami Beach is home to the New World Symphony, established in 1987 under the artistic direction of Michael Tilson Thomas. In January 2011, the New World Symphony made a highly publicized move into the New World Center building designed by Canadian American Pritzker Prize-winning architect Frank Gehry. Gehry is famous for his design of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, California. The new Gehry building offers Live Wallcasts™,[33] which allow visitors to experience select events throughout the season at the half-acre, outdoor Miami Beach SoundScape through the use of visual and audio technology on a 7,000-square-foot (650 m2) projection wall.

Climate Ribbon at Brickell City Centre Documentary | Miami, Florida
Located in in the heart of downtown Miami, Brickell City Centre is a brand new $1.05B construction project that is reshaping south Florida. This mixed use project spans 3 city blocks and has 5 high-rises including the well known “East” brand hotel. Developed by Swire Properties and constructed by Americaribe, this project promises to bring a whole new lifestyle to the residents of Brickell.
The Climate Ribbon is a first-of-it’s-kind steel structure made of glass, steel, & fabric. Arguably one of the largest art installations on the southeast United States, it functions as a canopy to protect shoppers at Brickell City Centre from the natural elements. Many years of architectural planning and scientific research has gone into creating a functional piece of art that actually harnesses the air coming off of Biscayne Bay and channels it into the retail area. Using the newest technologies available, the Climate Ribbon shows that A.C. is not necessary even in the hottest of areas in the US like Miami.
Chibi Moku & Americaribe gives you an in-depth look at the architectural and scientific facets of the Climate Ribbon and shows the world what is possible with a little bit of ingenuity.

Genting Group Unveils $3 Billion Master Plan For Resorts World Miami
Miami, FL -- September 14, 2011 -- One of the most prized pieces of waterfront land in Florida will soon come alive with Resorts World Miami, a Destination Resort featuring iconic skyscrapers sporting designs inspired by a coral reef and serving as the centerpiece of a new three-mile Baywalk that will activate the city's waterfront. Resorts World Miami, which represents a $3 billion investment by Genting Group, comprises approximately 10 million square feet of mixed-use development, making it one of the largest development projects in Florida history.
Resorts World Miami will accelerate Florida's evolution as a global destination at the crossroads of the Americas, said Mr. KT Lim, Chairman and Chief Executive of Genting. Most importantly, Resorts World Miami will boost confidence in Florida's economy, creating 15,000 direct and indirect construction jobs and 30,000 permanent positions on an ongoing basis, attracting more inbound investment, and substantially increasing the tax base for the city, county and state.
Rising from 13.9 acres of bayfront land currently housing the Miami Herald Media Company, Resorts World Miami is located in the heart of the City of Miami, midway between Miami International Airport and Miami Beach.
Resorts World Miami introduces a new vocabulary of architecture to Florida, one that is inspired by the ocean and Florida's coral reefs, said Bernardo Fort-Brescia, Co-Founder and Principal of Arquitectonica, the world-renown architecture firm based in Miami. At Resorts World Miami, building designs echo familiar forms that are part of our identity, including tropical fish and seashells. When you describe Miami and Florida, you inevitably come back to the water. We have captured that relationship with Resorts World Miami's design.
Resorts World Miami includes a series of four hotels with a total of 5,200 rooms and two residential towers featuring 1,000 units. The towers take on sculptural forms that change from every perspective. Each building is designed with outside balconies adorned with LED-lit exteriors, creating a jewel-like effect that will illuminate the Miami skyline each night. The Destination Resort will include a super-luxury hotel, a contemporary hotel, a convention hotel, and a family hotel, offering a lodging option for each segment of the market.
The towers sit atop an 8-story podium where guests can immerse themselves in a double-story, 250,000 square foot luxury retail galleria; more than 50 restaurants, lounges, bars and nightclubs; a high-tech multimedia entertainment area showcasing the music and culture of Florida and South America; and 700,000 square feet of convention and meeting space which includes a 200,000 square foot column-free ballroom, the largest in the United States. A casino will be included if Florida's legislature and governor approve Destination Resort legislation.
Each level of Resorts World Miami is designed with outdoor terraces offering
spectacular unobstructed views of Biscayne Bay, downtown Miami and Miami Beach. The podium's rooftop features a 3.6 acre outdoor lagoon -- a size equivalent to 12 Olympic-size swimming pools -- and natural sand beaches that will enable guests to swim from Biscayne Boulevard to the edge of Biscayne Bay, a distance of more than 1,000 feet. Each hotel will also have a private swimming pool.
Resorts World Miami will be the highlight of a three-mile Baywalk beginning at the Miami River and running north to Margaret Pace Park. The Baywalk will link Bayfront Park, Bayside Market Place, American Airlines Arena, Museum Park, the Miami Art Museum currently under construction, the new Miami Science Museum currently under design, the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts and the Omni Center. All will be connected by new public spaces and pedestrian, jogging, and cycling paths that will activate this stretch of partially completed Miami waterfront.
Resorts World Miami has been designed -- and will be constructed -- in accordance with all applicable zoning codes and regulations, including Miami 21, the City of Miami's comprehensive zoning code. The project has been conceived with an emphasis on sustainability and LEED-certified solutions, including three levels of below-grade parking.

Ocean Drive
The most famous street in all of Miami is Ocean Drive; a must-see for any visitor. Running down the East side of South Beach, it is lined with boutique hotels, bars, restaurants and lounges.
A fashion favourite in the early 90s, there are still a good number of modelling agencies along the street. Many aspiring models and fashionistas view Ocean Drive as one long catwalk. It's all about seeing and being seen, making this busy strip a great place for people-watching.
The street is dominated by the Streamline Moderne style; a subset of Art Deco architecture with long horizontal lines, curving forms and nautical themes. Head there after dark to see the striking buildings lit up in all their neon glory!

The expansive interior's white walls are an art collector's dream while the indoor/outdoor flow is seamlessly felt through the telescoping doors that slide effortlessly into each other for a clean modern look. Floor to ceiling windows provide incredible natural light from every room bringing the impressive landscape and water views indoors. The detached guesthouse, fitness center and second floor pool with lounge area further enhance its allure, making it the ultimate private enclave. Upon entering the drive, more wow factors await as multiple, detached interior spaces including 8 bedrooms, 8.5 baths and a cinema, as well as a lush wonderland of exterior living vignettes, koi ponds, gardens and a waterfront basketball half-court slowly reveal themselves. The 13,178-square-foot residence earns its name, The Levitating Geometry, because it sits off the ground between 2 to 4 feet and features multiple horizontal and vertical planes for an exquisite study in minimalism. Karp's innovative vision results in a true masterpiece, a sanctuary that's incredibly rare for Miami Beach. The owners have spent the last four years perfecting every inch of the home for a turnkey experience like no other.
