Poughkeepsie (/pəˈkɪpsi/ pə-KIP-see), officially the City of Poughkeepsie, separate from the Town of Poughkeepsie, is a city in the state of New York, United States, which is the county seat of Dutchess County. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 32,736.[4] Poughkeepsie is in the Hudson Valley midway between New York City and Albany, and is part of the New York metropolitan area.[5][6] The name derives from a word in the Wappinger language, roughly U-puku-ipi-sing,[7] meaning the reed-covered lodge by the little-water place, referring to a spring or stream feeding into the Hudson River south of the present downtown area.[8]
Poughkeepsie is known as The Queen City of the Hudson. It was settled in the 17th century by the Dutch and became New York's second capital shortly after the American Revolution. It was chartered as a city in 1854. Major bridges in the city include the Walkway over the Hudson, a former railroad bridge (originally called the Poughkeepsie Bridge) which re-opened as a public walkway on October 3, 2009; and the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Bridge, a major thoroughfare built in 1930 that carries U.S. Route 44 (concurrent with State Route 55) over the Hudson. The city of Poughkeepsie lies in New York's 18th congressional district.
Mid-Hudson Bridge
The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Mid-Hudson Bridge is a toll suspension bridge which carries US 44 and NY 55 across the Hudson River between Poughkeepsie and Highland in the state of New York. Governor and local resident Franklin D. Roosevelt and his wife Eleanor attended the opening ceremony on August 25, 1930. The bridge was renamed the Franklin D. Roosevelt Mid-Hudson Bridge in 1994 though the span is rarely referred to by its official name.
The bridge is 3,000 feet (910 m) long with a clearance of 135 feet (41 m) above the Hudson. At opening, it was the sixth-longest suspension bridge in the world. The chief engineer was Polish immigrant Ralph Modjeski, who had previously engineered the strengthening of the nearby Poughkeepsie Railroad bridge. Primary contractor was the American Bridge Company of Ambridge, Pennsylvania with steel from Carnegie. The span is unusual in that stiffening trusses were intentionally constructed on top of, not below, the deck.

In October 2009 the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park opened as a legacy project of the Hudson Fulton Champlain Quadricentennial. The park provides access to the Hudson River's breathtaking landscape for pedestrians, hikers, joggers, bicyclists, and people with disabilities. The bridge deck stands 212 feet above the river's surface and is 6,768 feet (1.28 miles) long, making it the longest, elevated pedestrian bridge in the world.

The Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge was built in the late 19th century to link New York and New England to an extensive, nationwide railway network. For decades, it was a major rail corridor for both freight and passengers.
After a fire in 1974, the bridge was abandoned and sat for decades as an orphaned relic. This brand new park was made possible due to the unwavering commitment of the community, who, through a non-profit organization called Walkway Over the Hudson, forged a public private partnership involving the State of New York, the federal government, neighboring municipalities, private corporations and other not for profit groups. The amazing result of this wonderful partnership is a brand new state park, now open for all to enjoy.
New! Ride the glass evelator up to the park or down to the Poughkeepsie waterfront. Along the way, be treated to great views of the surrounding scenery and the structure of the bridge. This video shows my walk over the Hudson.
Much longer then I thought, I think I got a bit tired half way through because I simply forgot to film anything (on my phone anyway). If you do the entire walk following the map (seen early in the clip), it takes quite a long time and is mostly not that interesting (assuming you are not simply out for a walk of course). To this traveller, with hindsight, I would have turned back on the bridge and walked back to the car park. The part of the walk from the Mid-Hudson bridge to the car park (ie the second half of the walk) is particular dull. I missed out on spending time at the FDR Memorial library because of the time spent here.
That's not to knock the actual Walkway which is amazing and well worth stopping to experience...just don't walk the entire loop.
Walking Bridge in Poughkeepsie or Highland NY

You can start on either side of the Hudson River in Poughkeepsie or Highland, NY and walk 1.28 miles to the other side with no cars. There is a glass elevator ride on the bridge which is located at Upper Landing Park, a short walk from the Poughkeepsie Train Station.
The Walkway is part of the Walkway Loop Trail and links to the Hudson Valley Rail Trail (Ulster).

Elevator Operating Hours: weather permitting, the elevator operates from 9:00 a.m. until 1 hour before Park closing time.
The Park opens daily, weather permitting, at 6:30 a.m. and closes at sunset.

Walkway Over The Hudson River
The Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge was built in 1888. At 6,767 feet in length, it was the longest bridge in the United States at that time. An engineering marvel for its day, long freight trains crossed it for almost 100 years. In 1974 it was abandoned as a railroad bridge.
Work began in 2007 to convert the bridge into the worlds longest, dedicated pedestrian bridge. To the right is an artists rendering of what it might look like when finished in October of 2009.
The opening of the bridge, as a Walkway and bike path, will coincide with the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson having first sailed up the river which bears his name.

U.S. Route 44 (US 44) in the state of New York is a major east--west thoroughfare in the Hudson Valley region of the state. Its entire 65.98-mile (106.18 km) length is maintained by the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), with the exception of the Mid-Hudson Bridge, which is maintained by the New York State Bridge Authority. The portion of the route in New York begins at an intersection with US 209 and New York State Route 55 (NY 55) near the hamlet of Kerhonkson and ends at the Connecticut state line near the village of Millerton. The road passes through rural parts of Ulster and Dutchess counties before crossing into Litchfield County, Connecticut.
New York State Route 55 (NY 55) is a state highway in southern New York, running from the Pennsylvania state line at the Delaware River in Barryville to the Connecticut state line at Wingdale. It is the only other state highway beside NY 7 to completely cross the state, from border to border, in an east--west direction, although NY 17 does so and is partially east--west. It also forms a concurrency when it joins US 44 for 33 miles.
Walkway Over the Hudson - Past, Present and Future
Walkway Over the Hudson is a project which is turning the Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge, a 19th century engineering marvel, into the longest bridge walkway in the world. It is being hailed as the centerpiece for New York States 400th anniversary of Henry Hudsons famous voyage in 1609, up what is now know as the Hudson River. The gala opening ceremony will occur during the first weekend in October of 2009.
