Whirlwind Tour of New Orleans - History and Food
We went to NOLA during Labor Day Weekend 2016 for the very first time in my attempt to travel more locally and explore historical American cities. NOLA's character and charm really stood out to me and I really enjoyed this eclectic city. During our short stay we took a tour of the swamps, visited Oak Alley Plantation, did a walking tour of the Garden District and Lafayette Cemetery No. 1, explored the French Quarter, and ate a lot of great food.
Here is the list of restaurants we visited included in the video:
1. Surrey's - in the Garden District
2. Coquette - on Magazine Street
3. Sucre - also on Magazine Street
4. Commander's Palace - a NOLA classic
5. Cafe du Monde - French Quarter
6. MoPho - Mid City

Touriste, NOLA

NOLA is commonly used for New Orleans, Louisiana.
New Orleans is a major United States port and the largest city and metropolitan area in the state of Louisiana. The city is named after Philippe d' Orléans, Duke of Orléans, Regent of France, and is well known for its distinct French Creole architecture, as well as its cross cultural and multilingual heritage. New Orleans is also famous for its cuisine, music (particularly as the birthplace of jazz), and its annual celebrations and festivals, most notably Mardi Gras. New Orleans is located in southeastern Louisiana, straddling the Mississippi River. Lake Pontchartrain, part of which is included in the city limits, lies to the north and Lake Borgne lies to the east. La Nouvelle - Orléans (New Orleans) was founded May 7, 1718, by the French Mississippi Company, under the direction of Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville, on land inhabited by the Chitimacha. Napoleon sold the territory to the United States in the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Thereafter, the city grew rapidly with influxes of Americans, French, Creoles, Irish, Germans and Africans. Major commodity crops of sugar and cotton were cultivated with slave labor on large plantations outside the city. New Orleans was catastrophically impacted by what the University of California Berkeley's Dr. Raymond B. Seed called the worst engineering disaster in the world since Chernobyl when the Federal levee system failed catastrophically during Hurricane Katrina in 2005. By the time hurricane Katrina approached the city at the end of August 2005, most residents had evacuated. Over 1,500 people died in Louisiana and some are still unaccounted for. Though New Orleans possesses numerous structures of national architectural significance, it is equally, if not more, revered for its enormous, largely intact historic built environment. There are many other historic housing styles: Creole cottages, American townhouses, double-gallery houses, and Raised Center-Hall Cottages. St. Charles Avenue is famed for its large antebellum homes. Its mansions are in various styles, such as Greek Revival, American Colonial and the Victorian styles of Queen Anne and Italianate architecture. New Orleans is also noted for its large, European-style Catholic cemeteries, which can be found throughout the city. For much of its history, New Orleans' skyline consisted of only low and mid-rise structures. The soft soils of New Orleans are susceptible to subsidence, and there was doubt about the feasibility of constructing large high rises in such an environment. Prior to Katrina, there were 265 hotels with 38,338 rooms in the Greater New Orleans Area. In May 2007, there were over 140 hotels and motels in operation with over 31,000 rooms. According to a travel poll, New Orleans is the best U.S. city as a spring break destination and for stylish boutique hotels, cocktail hours, singles/bar scenes, live music concerts and bands, antique and vintage shops, cafés/coffee bars, neighborhood restaurants, and people watching. The city also ranked second for gay friendliness (behind San Francisco, California), friendliness (behind Charleston, South Carolina), bed and bath hotels and inns, and ethnic food. Notable tourist attractions in the Quarter include Bourbon Street, Jackson Square, St. Louis Cathedral, the French Market (including Café du Monde, famous for café au lait and beignets) and Preservation Hall. To tour the port, one can ride the Natchez, an authentic steamboat with a calliope, which cruises the Mississippi the length of the city twice daily. Unlike most other places in The United States, and the world, New Orleans has become widely known for its element of elegant decay. The city's many beautiful cemeteries and their distinct above-ground tombs are often attractions in themselves, the oldest and most famous of which, Saint Louis Cemetery, greatly resembles Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.
A Ride On The Memphis Riverfront Loop Trolley
The MATA Trolley is a heritage streetcar system operating in Memphis in the U.S. state of Tennessee. It has operated since April 29, 1993.
As of 2008, the system consists of three lines: the Main Street Trolley, the Madison Avenue Loop and the Riverfront Loop. These lines are operated by the Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA), and were put into operation over fifty years after Memphis' original streetcar network was dismantled in the 1940s. The trolleys used are almost all rehabilitated, vintage streetcars. The original three cars in operation on opening day were all formerly used in Porto, Portugal, and are Car 187, circa 1927; Car 194, circa 1935; and Car 204, circa 1940. These cars are each 30 feet 6 inches (9.3 m) long, 7 feet 10 inches (2.39 m) wide and weigh 25,820 pounds (11.71 t) without passengers. The cars were restored by Kerns-Wilcheck Associates of Memphis. Three additional ex-Porto cars (156, 164 and 180) joined them within weeks, and the fleet had six cars (all ex-Porto single-truckers) by May 1993.
Between the mid-1990s and 2003, the Gomaco Trolley Company supplied an additional ten cars: nine reconditioned Melbourne, Australia type W2 cars and one single-truck car (No. 1979) that was built new by Gomaco in 1993, originally as a demonstrator. There is also car 1794, which was originally an open-sided car from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, but was heavily rebuilt and enclosed before entering service in Memphis. The most recent addition, in early 2004, is a replica Birney Safety Car, manufactured by Gomaco, the same cars used on the TECO Line Streetcar System in Tampa, Florida.
The fleet and overhead wires were converted from trolley pole to pantograph current collection in early 2003, during a three-month suspension of service which started on January 5, 2003. Source: Wikipedia.

Bought in 1831 by Marie Delphine LaLaurie and her husband and extensively extended and remodeled, this elegant New Orleans mansion was the height of luxury and refinement for its day. However, it held a far more sinister secret in its slave quarter and attic space. While Madame LaLaurie seemed normal to her white, high-society counterparts, she enjoyed the sadistic torture and murder of her slaves in private. In 1834, a slave that had been chained to the stove in the kitchen started a fire in an attempt to either commit suicide or gain help, and it was at this time that the chained and mutilated slaves were found, causing a huge backlash of anger that culminated in a large mob descending on the mansion and destroying it. LaLaurie escaped and fled to France where she died about a decade later.
The aftereffects of her malicious actions are still felt to this day, however, as extreme paranormal occurrences have been routinely reported at the mansion ever since the mid-19th century. Screams and groans are often heard, and apparitions of chained and mutilated slaves are often seen, much to the horror of visitors. Some have even reported being attacked by what appears to be the spirit of Madame LaLaurie.

The Creole Affair: The Slave Rebellion that Led the U.S. and Great Britain to the Brink of War
Author Arthur Downey discusses the most successful slave rebellion in American history. Held against their will aboard the Creole–a slave ship on its way from Richmond to New Orleans in 1841–the rebels seized control of the ship and changed course to the Bahamas. Because the Bahamas were subject to British rule of law, the slaves were eventually set free, and their presence on foreign soil sparked one of America's most contentious diplomatic battles with the United Kingdom. A book signing follows the program.
NYC Travel Tips: 10 Things to Know Before You Go to New York City
Things YOU need to know before you travel to New York City. NYC consists of 5 Boroughs, Manhattan, the most famous and dense is also the smallest. Brooklyn is the most populated, with 2.6 million residents (total of 8.5M in NYC). Queens is the largest, and “most ethnically diverse” county in the US. Bronx is the northenmost and the only one that is part of the US Mainland. Staten Island is the most suburban
Manhattan is BIG -- don’t expect to walk the whole thing in a day
5 days is probably the sweet spot. No less than 3 days.
Wear comfortable shoes
Girls: Sex and the City says everybody walks in heels all the time -- not so much.
Don’t try and walk everywhere, the subway is there for a reason.
NYC is Expensive! Everything costs more here.
The city runs on tips
New Yorkers aren’t really rude.. They are just efficient.
Expect to pay to use a bathroom, there really aren’t many good public toilets
Weather
For about 8 months out of the year it is chilly. And, for about 3 months it’s just plain miserable. Be prepared for really cold and windy, or really hot, humid, and muggy. Be prepared to rain always.
Summer: Highs 84F/29C Lows: 68F/20C (July)
Winter: Highs: 38F/3C - Lows 25F/-4C (January)
Winter Footwear -- puddles the size of small lakes
Layers
Best months: September, October, May and June
Getting in
Airports
LaGuardia (M80 Bus)
JFK (Airtrain to Howard Beach then catch the subway)
Newark (30 mins on Amtrak or NJ Transit)
Beware of unnoficial cabs
Trains -- to Penn Station or Grand Central. Grand Central is amazing.
Megabus if you’re on the east coast
Driving -- if you do drive in… just plan to park and leave your car for the duration of your stay.
Transportation in NYC
The Subway mostly runs north south… east and west you’ll be walking it
If you’re in NYC for awhile, get a week or month long Subway pass
Avoid the empty subway car, it’s empty for a reason. Hot or smelly.
Don’t lean on the subway poles… more people can hold on to it
Pay attention to the local, or express trains.
Get in the subway at the correct entrance, going the right direction, and for the right line
There are tons of yellow taxis… but they are notoriously hard to hail in bad weather
Flagship city for Uber, Lyft. But traffic is slow.
If you’re running late, don’t take a taxi. You WILL get stuck in traffic.
Walking -- don’t drop in the middle of the sidewalk
Ferrys for a different way to get around
NYC Ferry - East River route for some of the best views
Citi Bikes -- 10,000 bikes and 600 stations -- Download the citi bike app - $12/day
Bus Tours -- skip it
Times Square
Crowded, chaotic, dazzling and overpriced
Is really small -- and there’s not much to do once you get there.
Whatever you do, don’t eat here. The food is overpriced and mediocre due to high rent.
Broadway Shows
Book way ahead of time
There’s a vibrant “Off-Broadway” Scene
Book of Mormon and Avenue Q are my favorites
Check out the TKTs booth for cheap tickets or online now
Parks (Central Park & the High Line)
Central Park Is really big -- and no subway across
Central Park is 800 Acres
Strawberry Fields, Sheep’s Meadow, ice skating rinks.
