Mid -Continent Railroad Museum Tour North Freedom Wisconsin July 12th 2019
On July 12th 2019 we were able to see what was going on up in North Freedom Wisconsin. As you might know, last year in Aug they had a big flood and was closed for the rest of the season. 11 months later they are back up and running again. We were so surprised to see them open so soon after seeing the devastation of last year. What a great miracle. So come along with us and look at these amazing trains. There is some great history to see. Please subscribe if you are new to the channel to see more, and please click the thumbs up and comment as well. Thanks for watching.

Description
Mid Continent RR Museum and Train Ride in North Freedom, WI
Film Date: August 21, 2015
Another part of my Wisconsin Dells trip was going to the Mid Continent Railroad Museum in North Freedom, WI, which is just south of Wisconsin Dells. Running on former CNW trackage, their train runs out to a certain point and back to the museum. The engine on this day was the 1256, a Baldwin RS4TC switcher. Enjoy the ride and it's beautiful P3!

Steam Days at Mid-Continent Railway Museum
Mid-Continent Railway Museum in North Freedom, Wisconsin hosted Steam Days, a special event held in August 2011 which featured visiting steam locomotive Flagg Coal Company #75. This event marked the first time in over a decade that a steam train operated at the museum as it's own locomotives have been out of service while restoration efforts are carried out. Also featured was just-restored Copper Range Railroad combination coach/baggage car #25. The car was joined with previously restored Copper Range Railroad coach #60 in what was likely their first revenue train together in 80+ years.

Chase of WSOR L463 Devils Lake to North Freedom, 4051/4052 1/27/2015
On Tuesday I ventured up toward the Wisconsin Dells area, but before I got there heard WSOR 4051 West getting a warrant from Reedsburg Sub MP 160 to Rock Springs.
I waited to intercept the train as it snaked along the shore of Devil's Lake at 10 MPH. Sequentially numbered ex-MP, non-dynamic-brake SD40-2s power the 16 car train. Lead unit 4051 sports a rather musical P3 horn (actually, so does 4052).
Next we see the train pass through what is now the last wigwag crossing on the WSOR Southern Division. The one at Avoca on the ex-MILW Prairie Sub was removed at the end of October 2014 shortly after I caught it on the 24th.
A short distance west of there, they stop to shove their boxcars into the Baraboo industrial lead and set them out for RR Donnelly Printing. Then the power is seen from the Moore St. bridge as it emerges from the spur light, couples up to the remaining seven loaded gondolas, and continues west.
Finally the train is seen coming through North Freedom, a few miles east of Rock Springs and the location of the Mid-Continent Railway Museum, whose line (a spur that used to go to iron ore and quartzite mines) connects on the west side of town. This is actually the first time I've shot a non-museum train in this town.

Mid-Continent Railway Museum Alco S1 #7 ride!
I went to Devils Lake State Park for camping over the weekend and one of the excursions was to the Mid-Continent Railway Museum. That day they were running an Alco S-1 which was built in 1941. I got many shots of it including it starting up. This was surely a trip I will remember. The volunteers there were also very friendly and cool, I think I'll come back for a visit sometime in the future, when I can and its possible. Taken on 5/25/13.
Thanks for watching!
Mid Continent Railway Museum Whistle On The Wind
Back in 1971 or 72, when I was about 20 and working as a camera salesman at the Meuer Photoart House (Madison's premier photo shop), I was really interested in becoming a filmmaker. Using all my earnings, I purchased a Bolex 16mm EBM, Nagra 4.2L, microphones, et al ad infinitum. The first film I produced was Whistle On The Wind, a documentary about the Mid Continent Railway Museum in North Freedom, Wisconsin. I edited it on a Moviola at the University of Wisconsin; using some facilities on Bascom Hill the night of student protests up and down the State Street mall. I remember trying to get home late that night on a city bus, and dodging teargas and national guard soldiers.
Over 20 years later, I obtained a copy of the film from the museum's then-president Dick Goddard (who also had a huge part in the production of the film) and projected it on a wall....creating a 3/4 videotape of the entire 20-minute documentary. About fifteen years after that, I was able to convert part of it to VHS before the last available U-matic machine died. What you see here is the only segment of the part I found that could still be playable and converted to digital.
The original production was narrated by Madison radio personality Jim Mader...his narration being recorded on a Crown reel machine owned by UW professor Dr. Richard Greiner who I remember as not only an audio afficiando, but the greatest Leica collector in the world.
Incidentally, the 2nd film I made was called Eleven Minutes To Glory, and followed the Madison Scouts drum and bugle corps as they presented the 'Alice In Wonderland' field show.

This is the Wisconsin Northern division of Progressive Rail. They run from Chippewa Falls to Rice Lake and over to Barron Wisconsin. They use two GP15-1 and a SW1500 engine. They were just north of Bloomer when I got them heading north to Chetek. I got a friendly wave from the engineer.
