The Post Office is an important piece of federal architecture. During the administration of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the need to put people back to work in the Depression was paramount. FDR created the Works Progress Administration (WPA) to do just that, and among many other federally financed projects the WPA constructed new post offices all over the country.
FDR was personally interested in local history. He mandated that each new post office for every community refer to some aspect of the community's local history. In the case of the City of Poughkeepsie, the design of the building was a direct model of the original 18th century Courthouse. It is constructed of local fieldstone and has certain design elements that reflect the Dutch heritage of the region.
The original courthouse was important in the Revolutionary period. It was where legislators from throughout New York State met and decided to become part of the newly independent federation of thirteen states. The debates in the Poughkeepsie courthouse eventually led to the amendments to the U.S. Constitution, known as the Bill of Rights.
The WPA also gave artists meaningful work. Most of the post offices built during this period have murals depicting local history painted on their inside walls. The mural inside the Poughkeepsie post office depicts the early Indian inhabitants and the settlement of the Dutch and then English in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Across the street from the post office on the eastside of Market Street is the Poughkeepsie Journal Building. It was built to emulate the structure of the post office, and essentially what FDR was doing with federal money, they were doing with private money. The Poughkeepsie Journal Building is also in the Dutch Colonial style with rooflines that are very similar to buildings that were built by the Dutch in Albany and New York City during the Dutch period of the early 17th century.
The City Hall is located across from the post office on the westside of Market Street, directly opposite the Poughkeepsie Journal building. It is a mid-20th century structure and was built in a modernist architectural style. Unfortunately, there were lots of problems with the flat roof and construction, as the building was closed for ten years due to water leakage. It is the central building for city services, such as the Mayor's and City Manager's offices, the offices of the Planning and Taxation Departments, and also the central office for the Police Department.
South of City Hall is the Grand Hotel, originally built as a Sheraton Hotel, and attached to it is the Mid-Hudson Civic Center and the McCann Ice Arena. Continuing southward, across the westbound arterial is the current County Courthouse, built on the site of the 18th century courthouse, and the County Office Building. Across from it is the renovated Bardavon Theater, the oldest continuous theater in New York State, and a few banks and financial institutions.
Further south, is the former YMCA Building which now houses the County's Department of Social Services. Because the DSS offices are here in the county seat, all who seek social services, such as welfare, come into the city, thus straining the city's ability to provide necessities such as housing, since the city has a relatively small tax base compared to the rest of the county where many of these residents come from.

Revisit to one of my favorite abandoned locations in an effort to get as much footage as possible before the demolition, which is currently underway, is complete.This facility was formally a psychiatric hospital that opened in 1873. It closed in 2003 and has since fallen into ruins. Despite most of the buildings being completely inaccessible due to fire damage and structural collapses, what remains is still unbelievable amazing.

After an over four-year investigation, a Newburgh man was charged with insurance fraud after a home fire. The fire started on October 2nd, 2013, at a home on Route 32 in Newburgh. Photos of the home on Google Maps, shows the home’s roof mostly missing. On Monday, 52-year-old Alejandro Perez was charged with attempted grand larceny and insurance fraud.
A man admitted he sexually abused his step-granddaughter in the Hudson Valley. On Friday, 69-year-old Stanley Allen was sentenced to 8 years in prison. Allen used to own property in Wallkill, where he sexually abused his wife’s granddaughter. The child considered Allen her grandfather, and officials say even called him “pop pop.”
A Hudson Valley man was hit and killed while riding his bike on Route 9W. Police say, for an unknown reason, Michael Brailey of Red Hook left the road in Ulster Park and struck a man on a bicycle Monday evening around 6:30. 33-year-old Justin Boyd of Ulster County was pronounced dead on the scene. The investigation into the fatal crash continues.
A young girl is recovering in the hospital after being attacked by a coyote at a playground in Westchester County. The five-year-old was playing with friends at James M. Carroll Park in Thornwood when the animal ran at the young girl and started trying to bite her. Her mom and an officer-duty officer were able to hold the coyote down. The animal later tested postive for rabies.
It’s believed that the fire at the old Hudson River Psyc center was set on purpose. The fire began just before 4 a.m. Friday near the old main administration building. The blaze later spread to the main building. Police say the fire was intentionally set and anyone with information should call Town of Poughkeepise police. A $5,000 reward is being offered.

Albany is known for its rich history, commerce, culture, architecture, and institutions of higher education. Albany constitutes the economic and cultural core of the Capital District of New York State, which comprises the Albany-Schenectady-Troy, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area, including the nearby cities and suburbs of Troy, Schenectady, and Saratoga Springs. With a 2013 Census-estimated population of 1.1 million the Capital District is the third-most populous metropolitan region in the state. As of the 2010 census, the population of Albany was 97,856.
The area that later became Albany was settled by Dutch colonists who in 1614, built Fort Nassau for fur trading and, in 1624, built Fort Orange. In 1664, the English took over the Dutch settlements, renaming the city as Albany, in honor of the then Duke of Albany, the future James II of England and James VII of Scotland. The city was officially chartered in 1686 under English rule. It became the capital of New York in 1797 following formation of the United States. Albany is one of the oldest surviving settlements of the original British thirteen colonies, and is the longest continuously chartered city in the United States.During the late 18th century and throughout most of the 19th, Albany was a center of trade and transportation. The city lies toward the north end of the navigable Hudson River, was the original eastern terminus of the Erie Canal connecting to the Great Lakes, and was home to some of the earliest railroad systems in the world. In the 1920s, a powerful political machine controlled by the Democratic Party arose in Albany. In the latter part of the 20th century, Albany experienced a decline in its population due to urban sprawl and suburbanization; however, the New York State Legislature approved a $234 million building and renovation plan for the City in the 1990s that spurred renovation and building projects around the downtown area. In the early 21st century, Albany has experienced growth in the high-technology industry, with great strides in the nanotechnology sector.

Designed in 1867 by Frederick Clarke Withers in a High Victorian Gothic Style, this main building is just one within a sprawling complex of abandoned structures that once housed the Hudson River State Hospital. Opening in 1871 on beautifully landscaped grounds designed by Calvert Vaux and Frederick Law Olmsted (who were still creating Central Park at the time), the hospital would grow to house nearly 8,000 patients and staff by the 1950’s. In the following decades, the hospital quickly declined as psychiatric treatment changed and less funding was granted. By 2001, the grounds had been completed abandoned. Since then, the 156 acre site has been slated to become a residential and retail space with Wither’s main building to be repurposed, but on April 27th of this year, an arsonist’s fire destroyed much of the main admin building.

Stewart International Airport, officially New York Stewart International Airport (IATA: SWF, ICAO: KSWF, FAA LID: SWF), is a public/military airport in Orange County, New York, United States. It is in the southern Hudson Valley, west of Newburgh, and southwest of Poughkeepsie, approximately 60 miles (97 km) north of Manhattan, New York City. The airport is in the Town of Newburgh and the Town of New Windsor. It is included in the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2017–2021, in which it is categorized as a non-hub primary commercial service facility.Developed in the 1930s as a military base to allow cadets at the nearby United States Military Academy at West Point to learn aviation, it has grown into the major passenger airport for the mid-Hudson region and continues as a military airfield, housing the 105th Airlift Wing of the New York Air National Guard and Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 452 (VMGR-452) of the United States Marine Corps Reserve. The Space Shuttle could have landed at Stewart in an emergency.After its closure as a U.S. Air Force base in the early 1970s, an ambitious plan by Governor Nelson Rockefeller to expand and develop the airport led to a protracted struggle with local landowners that led to reforms in the state's eminent domain laws but no actual development of the land acquired. In 1981 the 52 American hostages held in Iran made their return to American soil at Stewart.
In 2000 the airport became the first U.S. commercial airport privatized when United Kingdom-based National Express was awarded a 99-year lease on the airport. After postponing its plans to change the facility's name after considerable local opposition, it sold the rights to the airport seven years later; the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey board voted to acquire the remaining 93 years of the lease and later awarded AFCO AvPorts the contract to operate the facility. The Port Authority rebranded the airport as New York Stewart International Airport in 2018 to emphasize its proximity to New York City.

The Hudson River is a 315-mile (507 km) river that flows from north to south primarily through eastern New York in the United States. The river originates in the Adirondack Mountains of Upstate New York, flows southward through the Hudson Valley, and eventually drains into the Atlantic Ocean at New York Harbor, between New York City and Jersey City. The river serves as a political boundary between the states of New Jersey and New York at its southern end. Further north, it marks local boundaries between several New York counties. The lower half of the river is a tidal estuary, deeper than the body of water into which it flows, occupying the Hudson Fjord, an inlet which formed during the most recent period of North American glaciation, estimated at 26,000 to 13,300 years ago. Tidal waters influence the Hudson's flow from as far north as the city of Troy.
The river is named after Henry Hudson, an Englishman sailing for the Dutch East India Company, who explored it in 1609, and after whom Hudson Bay in Canada is also named. It had previously been observed by Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano sailing for King Francis I of France in 1524, as he became the first European known to have entered the Upper New York Bay, but he considered the river to be an estuary. The Dutch called the river the North River – with the Delaware River called the South River – and it formed the spine of the Dutch colony of New Netherland. Settlements of the colony clustered around the Hudson, and its strategic importance as the gateway to the American interior led to years of competition between the English and the Dutch over control of the river and colony.
During the eighteenth century, the river valley and its inhabitants were the subject and inspiration of Washington Irving, the first internationally acclaimed American author. In the nineteenth century, the area inspired the Hudson River School of landscape painting, an American pastoral style, as well as the concepts of environmentalism and wilderness. The Hudson was also the eastern outlet for the Erie Canal, which, when completed in 1825, became an important transportation artery for the early-19th-century United States.
