Central New York: Brew Central – Empire Brewing Co.
David Katleski was a restaurateur willing to take a chance on a new trend in the 1990s. His Syracuse brewpub became a cornerstone of the budding New York state craft beer movement and David became a leading advocate for growing the industry to national prominence.
Head Brewer Tim Butler also came from a culinary background before becoming an exceptional brewer, getting his professional start at nearby Middle Ages. He used to stop into Empire for a pint after his shifts there and David eventually tapped his talent that has taken the brewpub to the next level.
Tim shares David’s commitment to using nearly all-local ingredients in both the beer and restaurant fare. The rich hop and agricultural history of Central New York gives a unique character to Empire’s beers that no doubt help feed the growth of New York’s craft beer niche.
Tim: People ask me what do I enjoy most about being a brewer. One of the greatest things is when you create something and you see someone come out and they put their hard earned dollars on the bar for it and they take it and they enjoy it, they drink it. You see the smile come across their face. You know, that's really, really rewarding. I don't think that's ever going to change for me. I always enjoy watching people enjoy our product.
I think that we are on track to become one of the best brewing states in the country. There are a lot of new breweries popping up but the quality of the beer is, I think, maintaining a very high standard. I think there's a lot of room for all of us. I think as a whole, as a New York state beer, we have a lot of potential and a lot of room to grow together and become one of the best brewing states in the country.
I think that New York state in general and Central New York in general, has very passionate farmers. I know farmers from dealing with them through here at the restaurant. Be it beef suppliers or vegetables suppliers. They can be as passionate or are as passionate as brewers are. I think there's definitely a common connection there. Their growing something, creating something that then their passing on to us to put in our product. Now that I've been more and more using New York state ingredients, there's definitely a different characteristic to them. As opposed to ingredients that are grown in other parts of the country or other parts of the world for that matter. I do think it's giving us a local flavor, a local character that you're not going to be able to emulate in other parts of the country unless you come to New York state and buy New York state ingredients. They do give us a unique flavor and give us a unique style of beer.
David: The thing different hat you will know about a New York state beer is, you know the French liken the term to terroir. You can actually taste the ingredients from Central New York. It's kind of odd but the hops tend to be slightly different citrus flavor. The barley tends to be a little, bolder in flavor. There is a character, a central New York characteristic that you get definitely out of this.
So far, we've done really well with our brand. Notably we do the flagship beer for the Waldorf Astoria. It's a honey brown with honey that they cultivate off of the twentieth floor apiary area that they have at the hotel. We also make the exclusive beer called Empire Green for Tavern on the Green in Central Park. We have the flagship moniker brew for them. The brand has done really well on the high end scale. It's also in a lot of dive bars too. In fact, one of my favorite places in New York to go have this beer is a place called The Dive Bar, so go figure.
To be able to go to your local mom and pop bar in a corner, to very high end restaurants and be able to fill within that, shows the versatility of our brand. We do things with a lot of passion, with a lot of love. That's how we make our beer. That how we make our food and that's how we try to run our business.
Tim: The craft beer drinker now is very savvy, very understanding. They know what they want, they know what's good and they know what's not good. You can't pull wool over anybody's eyes anymore. You got to brew quality if you want maintain. I think Empire had always done it. They've always had quality beer, quality food, quality atmosphere. It's just a brand that people, once they latch on to, they don't let it go.
Whether tipping a farm-to-glass beer at a brewpub, sampling some moonshine or enjoying a sip of hard cider or wine, you’ll be a part of something special in Brew Central. Central New York brewers, distillers, publicans and vintners offer the state’s best craft beverages on par with any of the United States’ finest pints. NY breweries expand locally
HOOSICK FALLS -- Browns Brewing Company is working to finish
construction on a new facility that will eventually allow it to bottle twenty
times what it can do in Troy. The facility is part of a national trend of
regional breweries expanding.
As a category we're up. We are certainly up.
We're at the point where we can't make any more beer in Troy, so demand is
there now it's time for supply, said Gregg Stacey, Vice President of Marketing
for Browns.
Browns has enjoyed positive relations with
the state and local leaders, which has allowed it to invest further. It plans
to expand throughout New York and to some nearby neighboring states.
I'm always flattered when we go out to a
restaurant and someone is drinking a pale ale next to us or an oatmeal stout,
said Browns co-founder Kelly Brown. ,I just nudge Garry [Brown] and say look!
Thats our beer. We're not just drinking it.
Other breweries have had similar success as
well.
Last year Gov. Andrew Cuomo hosted a Beer,
Wine and Spirits summit to encourage brewers to develop locally. Recently Ravens Head Brewing Co. announced
plans to move into the Cohoes armory in March and begin bottling by the fall.
Cohoes has their act together. Theyre right
on their game and they're proactive about the way they approach everything,
said Brennon Cleary, President of Ravens Head.

Threats to Citizenship in a Changing World
Tanner Day at the Maxwell School: The Future of Citizenship and Public Service
Public service has been severely challenged by several long-term trends: declining public trust in government and low public esteem; political polarization, partisanship and incivility; negative press coverage; and greater direct political attack on government from different groups and institutions.
Many observers have described public service as being in a state of crisis. In such a climate, how can the human capital for governing be secured and enriched? How can citizens across all sectors sustain and nurture their own commitments to public service?
Exploring these questions, Tanner Day at Maxwell will begin with keynote remarks by Governor Whitman, delivered as part of the Tanner Lecture on Ethics, Citizenship, and Public Responsibility, a public forum for exploring questions about ethical citizenship in provocative and challenging ways.
Afternoon Session Panelists
Dr. Elizabeth Cohen, Professor, Political Science
The Hon. Stephen Hagerty, Mayor, City of Evanston, Illinois
Mr. Chris Meek, Senior Director of Global Relationship Management, S&P Global
Dr. Jamie Winders, Chair and Professor, Geography

Trailer park millionaires
Some of the richest people in the US, including billionaires Warren Buffett and Sam Zell, have made millions from trailer parks at the expense of the country's poorest people. Seeing their success, ordinary people from across the country are now trying to follow in their footsteps and become trailer park millionaires. The Guardian went to Orlando to learn the tricks of the trade from Frank Rolfe, the self-appointed dean of Mobile Home University, as he led would-be investors around a trailer park for sex offenders.

DAVID CAY JOHNSTON: LIVING IN TRUMP'S AMERICA
While Twitter feuds and Russian hackers dominate news headlines, President Donald Trump’s administration is radically changing the policies and programs that define the American way of life. In their first year, the Trump administration’s efforts to defund Obamacare, repeal LGBT protections in the workplace, impose tax cuts and deport undocumented immigrants have significantly impacted millions of Americans, all while the mainstream media has struggled to keep up. Beyond the tweets, firings, scandals and indictments, how will Trump’s policy agenda continue to affect our daily lives?
Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist David Cay Johnston says he has the answers. Since 1988, Johnston has been chronicling Trump’s personal life and business dealings—from his casinos to his marriages and beyond. In his new book, It’s Even Worse Than You Think, Johnston is going where the media won’t—into the weeds—to shed new light on the Trump administration’s policies and bureaucratic choices and how they will change America. Join Johnston for a revealing conversation about the Trump administration’s impact on our finances, health care, safety and much, much more.
ch 9) Slavery Without Submission, Emancipation Without Freedom
chapter 9: A People's History (Of The United States) Howard Zinn.
~
Chapter 9, Slavery Without Submission, Emancipation Without Freedom addresses slave rebellions, the abolition movement, the Civil War, and the effect of these events on African-Americans. Zinn writes that the large-scale violence of the war was used to end slavery instead of the small-scale violence of the rebellions because the latter may have expanded beyond anti-slavery, resulting in a movement against the capitalist system. He writes that the war could limit the freedom granted to African-Americans by allowing the government control over how that freedom was gained.
Watch: The Washington Nationals’ championship parade
A parade honoring the Washington Nationals’ historic World Series win against the Houston Astros is scheduled for Saturday, November 2, at 2 p.m. ET. Join Washington Post reporter Libby Casey and others for live coverage of the celebration. The Nationals are the first team in major league history to win the World Series by claiming four games on the road. They beat the Astros, 6-2, in Game 7 to secure the franchise’s first title and Washington’s first World Series championship since 1924, when the Senators topped the New York Giants in seven games.
While the final game was held in Houston, fans gathered across the city and at the stadium in Navy Yard to watch. They wore shark hats in honor of the team’s unofficial anthem, the children’s song “Baby Shark.” Watch the moment the ballpark erupted in celebration after the victory: Read more: Subscribe to The Washington Post on YouTube:

The Brooks Family Lecture: Bringing America Together
Arthur Brooks addresses the divisions that plague America & finds a set of strategies to help us disagree better, forge a new model of aspirational leadership, & unite the country.
Tuesday, January 29, 2019
5:00pm – 6:30pm
Filene Auditorium, Moore Building
Sponsored by: Rockefeller Center
No matter what our political views, few people believe our country is as united as it should be. Whether in the media, politics, or even in our personal relationships, we all recognize that the country is increasingly defined by a culture of contempt – in which people treat others with whom they disagree as defective, or worthless. Within this distressing reality, however, there lies an opportunity for our nation. Drawing on history, social psychology, behavioral economics, and the counsel of ancient wisdom, Arthur Brooks addresses the divisions that plague America, and finds a set of strategies to help us disagree better, forge a new model of aspirational leadership, and unite the country.
Arthur C. Brooks is president of the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), a nonpartisan public policy think tank in Washington, DC, where he is also the Beth and Ravenel Curry Scholar in Free Enterprise. Additionally, Dr. Brooks is a columnist for the Washington Post and host of the podcast “The Arthur Brooks Show.”
At 19, Dr. Brooks left college to work professionally as a classical musician (a period his parents described as his “gap decade”). During this time, he toured the United States with the Annapolis Brass Quintet, recorded albums with jazz guitarist Charlie Byrd and others, and spent several seasons as associate principal French horn with the City Orchestra of Barcelona.
In his late twenties, Dr. Brooks returned to college by correspondence and studied economics, mathematics, and modern languages, eventually earning his B.A. while still working as a musician. He went on to pursue an M.A. in economics at Florida Atlantic University and a Ph.D. in public policy at the RAND Graduate School in Santa Monica, California. His doctoral work focused on applied microeconomics and mathematical modeling. While earning his Ph.D., Dr. Brooks also conducted research for the RAND Corporation on theater-level combat models for the US Air Force.
Upon completion of his doctorate, Dr. Brooks joined the faculty of Syracuse University as a professor of public administration. For ten years, he taught courses in economics and social entrepreneurship and conducted research on happiness and the economics of philanthropy. He was the Louis A. Bantle Professor of Business and Government at Syracuse until assuming the presidency of AEI on January 1, 2009.
Dr. Brooks has published dozens of scholarly articles and 11 books on topics including philanthropy, military operations research, the future of conservatism, and human happiness. His next book, “Love Your Enemies,” will be released in March 2019 (Broadside Books, 2019). Previous books include New York Times bestsellers “The Conservative Heart: How to Build a Fairer, Happier, and More Prosperous America” (Broadside Books, 2015) and “The Road to Freedom: How to Win the Fight for Free Enterprise” (Basic Books, 2012) as well as the textbook “Social Entrepreneurship” (Prentice Hall, 2008).
Dr. Brooks delivers more than 100 speeches annually around the US, Europe, and Asia. He appears regularly on radio and television and is a frequent guest host for programs such as CNBC’s “Squawk Box.” He writes frequently for the Washington Post and publishes featured pieces in outlets such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Commentary Magazine, and Foreign Affairs. In the spring of 2019, he is releasing “The Pursuit,” a feature-length documentary film that explores the themes of poverty alleviation and human happiness both at home and abroad.
In the summer of 2019, he will join the faculty of the Harvard Kennedy School and Harvard Business School.
