VietCamLao Chapter 17 - Cambodia. Angkor Wat and Koh Ker
Our Cambodian trip started from this small provincial capital. For a lot of tourists, Krong Stung Treng is a common stopover on the way to or from Laos. Town itself does not have too much to offer apart of the local market, couple of restaurants, guesthouses and Mekong river. After a good breakfast and brief market exploration we were ready to start our Cambodian trip!
Our primary destination was Siem Reap with its Angkor Wat complex. So basically over 300 km of paved road and full day of driving was waiting for us!
On the way we couldn’t miss Koh Ker temple, that’s situated about 120 kilometres northeast of Siem Reap. Koh Ker in ancient inscriptions, was the capital of the Khmer Empire for a very brief period from 928 to 944 CE. In this short time, as well as before and after, many sanctuaries were built and a spectacular 36-metre high seven-tiered pyramid Prasat Thom was erected. More than 180 sanctuaries have been found in an area of 81 square km. Since 1992 the site of Koh Ker has been on UNESCO's Tentative List of World Heritage Sites.
Our next obvious stop was Siem Reap; thanks to its Angkor Wat complex its the most visited site in Cambodia. Town has great variety of accommodation and good selection of restaurants for any pocket size.
Talking about Angkor: entrance fee in low season is 20 USD and probably its worth it as it's one of the most important archaeological sites of Southeast Asia. It extends over approximately 400 square kilometres and consists of scores of temples, hydraulic structures as well as communication routes. For several centuries Angkor, was the centre of the Khmer Kingdom.
Angkor was named a World Heritage site in 1992. The Angkor complex represents the entire range of Khmer art from the 9th to the 14th centuries, and includes a number of indisputable artistic masterpieces.
Our first stop was at Banteay Kdei. Its name means “Citadel of Chambers”. The ruins are a fascinating maze of chambers that are a delight to explore. Also serving as a Buddhist temple, these ruins have been home to an active monastery at multiple time periods since their construction in the 12th century.
Next temple we visited was Pre Rup. The modern name of this imposing and intriguing temple mountain translates as ‘turning the body’, referring to an ancient cremation rite but its origins were unrelated to cremation ceremonies.
After warm up with smaller temples we were ready for the most important and impressive once so it was time to visit the heart of Angkor Thom with its 12th-century Bayon temple. The Bayon was the last state temple to be built at Angkor, and the only Angkorian state temple to be built primarily as a Mahayana Buddhist shrine dedicated to the Buddha. 37 standing towers belong to Bayon temple with the central tower rising 43 meters above the ground.
In Khmer Angkor Wat means City of Temples”. Angkor Wat is the heart and soul of Cambodia and a source of fierce national pride. It even appears on the nation’s flag. Unlike the other Angkor monuments, it was never abandoned to the elements and has been in virtually continuous use since it was built. It was originally built in the first half of the 12th century by Emperor Suryavarman II as the state temple and political center of his empire. Originally dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu, Angkor Wat became a Buddhist temple by the end of the 12th century.
You need to be really fast and efficient if you decided to explore the whole complex in one day (as we did). Bring enough water and some snacks as it can be really hot and long day.
We couldn't miss the capital of Cambodia on the way to the south. Phnom Penh definitely has the vide of the big capital and in our opinion worth couple of days of visit .
For many thousands of years, the art of stone carving has flourished in Cambodia. From the small statues made by local artisans to the famous, breathtaking carvings found at Angkor Wat, stone carving has become one of the country's most cherished art forms. We were lucky to witness this amazing work in progress on the way to the seaside. After a long day of driving, we finally got to the ocean. The plan was to visit Kampot and Kep. The area offers a wide choice of accommodations and ferry departures to the offshore islands. We stopped there just for two nights. It was enough to check the whole area with its not very inviting water and overpriced restaurants. Unfortunately we didn't have much time for deeper exploration. We were ready to make our way to Vietnam

Coming to Cambodia we were not sure if we want to spend that much money on the entrance fee for Angkor. We are glad we did and we are also happy that we decided to go all or nothing and hired this amazing TukTuk driver Mr. Bean for one day (9 hours in total). Best 30 Dollars we spent on a guide ever!

Net Fishing at Siem Reap Province - Life in Cambodia
It's one of my video from December 2016 when we traveled to Siem Reap province. We stop a long the road to see people net fishing and cast net fishing in the stream to catch fishes. The beginning of this video is an old resort and there is a wooden bridge where we can walk on and give some bread to the fishes. The end part of the video is another cast net fishing from long time ago (mid 2016) when we travel from Oddar Meanchey to Siem Reap province. in this video, they caught some snakehead fishes, cat fishes and other fishes. Hope you like fishing as i do :-)

A Visit to Bayon Temple & Preah Khan Cambodia (Best Angkor Wat Temple?)
Heading to Cambodia soon? Not sure on the best temples to visit at Angkor wat near exciting Siem Reap?
Look no further because here is a sneak peek of the Bayon Temple and the Preah Khan temple.
Our video just showcases a few beautiful parts of the complex temple system, to see it you need to explore it for yourself.
This is no doubt the best Siem Reap things to do while travelling to Cambodia.
For the full information on visiting Angkor Wat click here:
Preah Khan temple was a surprise temple for us, it is a maze of doorways that go on for ages and in pretty much it's original state. To visit this amazing place you need to head north out of the gates, it is not far from the famous Ta Prohm Temple.
Bayon Temple Angkor is smack bang in the middle of Angkor Thom, roads lead to it directly from the gates.
The Bayon temple has a very impressive architecture that all tell a story of Cambodia's past.
Bayon is famous for its over 200 faces that have been built by hand in the 12th century. You will be blown away by these structures so make sure you get a 3-day pass to explore many of the Angkor Wat temples.
This experience is not to be missed and trust me Angkor Wat temples are the best in the world by a long shot!
Hope you enjoy the video.

Cambodia - 10 Best Places to Visit In Cambodia
10 BEST PLACES TO VISIT IN CAMBODIA
1- Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world and built in the 12th century. This legendary temple was originally built as a Hindu temple for the god of Vishnu, but later in the 14th century it had been converted into a Buddhist temple. The temple is rich in Apsaras nymphs or carvings which are entirely unique and well worth checking out.
2- Koh Ker was once the Khmer capital from 928AD to 944AD and now a quite intriguing archaeological site. This remote site was for a long time left abandoned and neglected which lead to significant encroachment of wildlife to create a greater sense of mystery. This archaeological site has several spectacular buildings that are easily explored on a day-trip from Siem Reap. The major highlight of the site is the seven-tier Prasat Thom which is a sandstone pyramid-shaped temple. It stands at a total height of 98-ft with a mythical half-bird, half-man figure standing on top. Beyond the beauty of Prasat Thom, there are also a further 42 structures in the local area that are worth exploring.
3- Koh Rong is a striking island in the Gulf of Thailand with its turquoise-green waters and white sandy beaches that can easily stand up to many of the tropical paradises elsewhere in SE Asia. This island is appreciated for its coral reefs and sandy coves, while the interior of the island is thick with pristine jungle that is dotted with stunning waterfalls and coconut palms. The island’s interior is also home to many different species of birds and other wildlife. A stay on this island for a short break is fairly peaceful and relaxing, although there is the opportunity to get involved in activities like trekking, snorkelling, diving and zip lines.
4- Koh Tonsay (also referred to as Rabbit Island) is a peaceful, secluded and untouched island located off Cambodia’s south coast. It is easy to reach from Kep with a 20-25 minute boat journey, but still seems to take the travellers completely away from the bustle and bustle of the mainland. This island has several open-air restaurants and rustic bungalows to make a tranquil place to stay with its tree-lined beach and lounging in hammocks. Kon Tonsay is relatively small and possible to walk the entire island in just a day. With no air-conditioning, Wi-Fi or television, a visit to this island on the Vietnam and Cambodia tours is certain to give an island paradise away from modern living.
5- Kratie was a former base of the Khmer Rouge at an early point in their campaign, which left this part of Cambodia relatively free of destruction. For this reason, this town is rich in striking French colonial buildings that appear along the length of the riverfront. Plus, this charming riverfront area is a perfect place to sit and watch the stunning sunsets over the Mekong River in the evening. Beyond the ability to capture the peaceful and tranquil landscape on the Indochina tours, a visit to Kratie gives a perfect opportunity to see the freshwater Irrawaddy dolphins which are located approx 14km from town.
6- Mondulkiri is rich in stunning landscape with its valleys, waterfalls, jungles and rolling hills. This province is home to a variety of endangered and rare species, such as the elephants, water buffalo and leopards. .
7- Phnom Penh is the country’s lively capital city which is blessed with a picturesque riverside promenade and lovely colonial buildings to make a quite beautiful city. From the contemporary restaurants and bars to crowded markets and glittering Royal Palace, a visit to Phnom Penh on the Cambodia tour packages is certain to benefit from exploring this complex city with plenty to see and do.
8- Popokvil Waterfall is located in the stunning Bokor National Park and looks its striking best throughout the rainy season. This two-tiered waterfall seems to have an ever-present mist and is surrounded by pretty rain forest scenery. A stop at the waterfall is great for a relaxing swim while in the national park, and for a few lucky travellers, it may even be possible to catch sight of a few of the rare animals that live in this country, such as the Malayan sun bear and pig-tailed macaque.
9- Set in the Dangrek Mountains at 1,722-ft, the Preah Vihear is a quite stunning Khmer temple built in the 11th and 12th centuries and gives wonderful views that span across the lowlands of Cambodia. The temple complex stretches over an area of nearly 2,000-ft with many of the buildings featuring intricate carvings.
10- Ream National Park is a huge area of natural beauty that spans a total area of nearly 210 sq km. It is relatively easy to reach from Sihanoukville with a travel distance by car of 25 km. This park is rich in tumbling waterfalls, coral reefs, a few islands, unspoilt beaches stretching for miles, and mangrove forests.

Angkor Shared tour with Banteay Srei temple
Beautiful Banteay Srei, Tomb Raider, and the ancient city of Angkor Thom
Morning Time
After breakfast, we'll start the tour with a short journey to Banteay Srei which is a beautiful temple located about 35km outside of Siem Reap town. It's best viewed in the morning time, which is why we'll go there first. You'll also have the opportunity to stop at a local community along the way and I will help you to experience the daily life of the locals living there. We can also taste some palm wine and palm sugar (depending on the season) and try other local products. On the way back we'll stop at the landmine museum.
We'll then stop for lunch at a local restaurant.
Afternoon Time
In the afternoon, we'll go to see Ta Prohm which is one of the most famous temples in the park. It was built in the mid 12th to early 13th century and was originally used as a Buddhist monastery and university. Nowadays, it's more famous for its appearance in Tomb Raider.
After Ta Prohm, we'll then go to visit the site of the ancient Royal Palace, the Terrace of the Leper King, The Elephant Terrace, Baphuon Temple, and the popular Bayon temple. Bayon is famous for the many faces which always seem to be looking right at you! Bayon was built in the 13th century and is also popular for its many galleries of bas-reliefs that tell the story of what life was like at that time. We 'll also stop to get photos of the Angkor Thom South Gate with it's stunning gate and causeway.
