A'famosa | Melaka | Malacca | Kota Melaka | 4k
Aerial view of A'Famosa fort in Kota Melaka.
A Famosa (Malay: Kota A Famosa; The Famous in Portuguese) is a former Portuguese fortress located in Malacca, Malaysia. It is among the oldest surviving European architectural remains in Southeast Asia and the Far East. The Porta de Santiago, a small gate house, is the only part of the fortress which still remains today.
The name is often mispronounced /eɪ/ Famosa, even among Malaysians, as though the Portuguese definite article a were the English letter A. A more authentic pronunciation would be /ɑː/ Famosa.
History
In 1511, a Portuguese fleet arrived under the command of Afonso de Albuquerque. His forces attacked and defeated the armies of the Malacca Sultanate. Moving quickly to consolidate his gains, Albuquerque had the fortress built around a natural hill near the sea. Albuquerque believed that Malacca would become an important port linking Portugal to the Spice Route in China. At this time other Portuguese were establishing outposts in such places as Macau, China and Goa, India to create a string of friendly ports for ships heading to Ming China and returning home to Portugal.
The fortress once consisted of long ramparts and four major towers. One was a four-story keep, while the others held an ammunition storage room, the residence of the captain, and an officers' quarters. Most of the village clustered in town houses inside the fortress walls. As Malacca's population expanded it outgrew the original fort and extensions were added around 1586.
The fort changed hands in 1641 when the Dutch drove the Portuguese out of Malacca.[1] The Dutch renovated the gate in 1670, which explains the logo ANNO 1670 inscribed on the gate's arch. Above the arch is a bas-relief logo of the Dutch East India Company.
The fortress changed hands again in the late 18th century when the Dutch handed it over to the British to prevent it from falling into the hands of Napoleon's expansionist France. The English were wary of maintaining the fortification and ordered its destruction in 1806. The fort was almost totally demolished but for the timely intervention of Sir Stamford Raffles, the founder of modern Singapore, who was sent on sick leave from Penang to Malacca in 1807. It was Captain William Farquhar, tasked with the destruction of the fort and town, who decided to save two of the gateways to the fort,[citation needed] including the Santiago Gate, as well as the Stadthuys, church and jail.
Archaeological finding
In late November 2006, a structure part of the fort, believed to be the Bastion Middleburg was accidentally uncovered during the construction of 110 meter revolving tower in Malacca Town.[2] The construction of the tower was ceased and its site was subsequently shifted to the popular district of Bandar Hilir on Jalan Merdeka where it was officially opened to the public on 18 April 2008. Malacca Museums Corporation suspects the structure was built by the Dutch during the Dutch occupation of Malacca from 1641 to 1824.
Earlier in June 2004, a watchtower named Santiago Bastion was discovered during the construction of Dataran Pahlawan.

Historic Malacca, Malaysia & the City Center
In this video, we drive through the heart Malacca. We leave Jonker Street, towards Lorong Hang Jebat Street at San Shu Gong Shop (plus code 56WX+29 Malacca). At San Shu Gong shop, a good variety of foodstuff is available, including many types of Malaysian street food, that you can eat or buy and carry as it is well packed. Jonker street itself is a great place for Malaysian Chinese street food.
Next, we pass the Cheng Ho Cultural Museum. Many guesthouses and small budget hotels are on the way. The House of Museums Malacca is also on the same road. Leaving the Lorong Hang Jebat, we turn right on the Jalan Kampung Pantai. We cross the Melaka River via Chan Koon Cheng Bridge and then turn right into the tourist center of Malacca, where most of the historic buildings are located.
On the left, you can see the church of St. Francis Xavier and a row of red colored shops. There is a tailor's shop, a money changer, a car rental shop. There is also a post office and a handicraft gallery. You can see the Clock Tower, the Victoria Fountain, and the Stadthuys as you cross the Malaysia Youth Museum and the Maritime Archeology Museum. The viewpoint of the Melaka River Cruise is on the right, on the opposite side of the road. Here you can find a cendol (pronounced 'chendol') seller. Chendol is good and popular dessert in Malaysia. You can have the opportunity to eat some cendol here.
After crossing the Melaka0 Mile roundabout, you can see the remains of the old Dutch fort and the Middleburg Bastion on the right. You're on Jalan Merdeka (Road) at this point. You can see the Museum of the Royal Malaysian Customs Department, the Flor de La Mar ship with a museum inside, etc. Then we pass between the two main shopping malls of Malacca-Dataran Pahlawan Melaka MegaMall, on your left, and Mahkota Parade, on your right.
You can then see The Imperial Heritage Hotel Melaka on your right and as we turn right and enter Jalan Parameswara( road), you can see Hotel Equatorial Melaka on your left. We then turn left to enter Jalan Chan Koon Cheng( road). We end our drive before Madras Cafe, near the famous Satay Celup shop.

Malacca, Malaysia - Travel Around The World | Top best places to visit in Malacca
Top best places to visit in Malacca, Malaysia
Malacca is located on the west coast of the Malay Peninsula, next to the Straits of Malacca.
Malacca, the historic state, has the outmoded feel with a laid back, leisurely pace.
The downtown area of the city is Dutch Square.
Around it are situated the most prominent buildings, such as:
Stadthuys, former town hall and one of the oldest Dutch buildings in the east.
Tang Beng Swee Clock Tower,
Queen Victoria’s Fountain,
Malaysia Youth Museum and Art Gallery,
And Christ Church.
During the day at this place is full of tourists.
The city center was listed by UNESCO as World Heritage Site.
Just a short walk from Dutch Square are located ruins of old bastion.
And in front of them is Church Of St Francis Xavier.
One of the most popular attractions are remains of Saint Paul’s Church.
Here you can feel the influence of different ruling eras Malacca witnessed.
From the Sultans to the Portuguese, the Dutch and finally the British.
Jalan Kota Street is packed with many interesting museums
Including ruins of the old A Famosa Fort,
Which was built just below the St Paul’s Church
Another place worth visiting is Proclamation Of Independence Memorial Museum.
A lot is going on along the Malacca River.
You can go to the Maritime Museum, which looks like a great ship,
Or you can visit the remains of Bastion Middleburg,
Or you can take a relaxing cruise down the river.
During its golden era it was a main trade route,
In our times it is a main tourist trail.
Just west of the river is Chinatown, a residential heart of Old Malacca.
The area is full of narrow winding streets, beautifully decorated houses, tiny shops, temples and mosques,
And Jonker Street the busiest and the most popular street of Malacca.
But this district has calm and peaceful atmosphere.
Here is a street which contains the prayer houses of the three faiths.
Including the oldest Chinese temple in Malaysia Cheng Hoon Teng Temple.
And Kampung Kling Mosque which has the mixed of Chinese, Javanese and Arab architecture.
Poh San Teng is a Chinese temple situated outside the city center.
Just next to it is famous King’s Well.
And all of this is at the foot of the largest Chinese cemetery outside of China.
Bukit China is not only a graveyard, it’s a green hill and a popular jogging spot.
And from the top is a nice view of the town.
But the best view of the Malacca is from Taming Sari.
This 110 meter tower offers breathtaking 360-degree views of the historic city and the coastline.

Traveling to Malaysia | Vacation in World Heritage Melaka | VLOG
Malacca, (Malay: Melaka; Tamil: மலாக்கா, simplified Chinese: 马六甲; traditional Chinese: 馬六甲), dubbed The Historic State[citation needed], is a state in Malaysia located in the southern region of the Malay Peninsula, next to the Strait of Malacca.
The state is bordered by Negeri Sembilan to the north and west and Johor to the south. The exclave of Cape Rachado also borders Negeri Sembilan to the north. Its capital is Malacca City, which is 148 kilometres (92 miles) south east of Malaysia's capital city Kuala Lumpur, 235 kilometres (146 miles) north west of Johor's largest city Johor Bahru, and 95 km (59 miles) north west of Johor's second largest city, Batu Pahat. This historical city centre has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 7 July 2008.
Although it was the location of one of the earliest Malay sultanates, the local monarchy was abolished when the Portuguese conquered it in 1511. The head of state is the Yang di-Pertua Negeri or Governor, rather than a Sultan.
Malacca has adopted as its slogan, Visiting Malacca Means Visiting Malaysia (Melawat Melaka Bererti Melawati Malaysia).
Malacca has numerous historical places and buildings. In order to preserve those sites, numerous museums have been built to preserve those legacies. Most of the museums in the state are managed by Malacca Museum Corporation (PERZIM; Malay: Perbadanan Muzium Melaka).[61] Museums in Malacca are Aborigines Museum, Agricultural Museum, Malacca Al-Quran Museum, Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum, Beauty Museum, Cheng Ho Cultural Museum, Chitty Museum, Customs Department Museum, Democratic Government Museum, Education Museum, Malacca Forestry Museum, Governor's Museum, History and Ethnography Museum, Malacca Islamic Museum, Malacca Kite Museum, Malacca Literature Museum, Malacca Sultanate Palace Museum, Malay and Islamic World Museum, Malaysia Architecture Museum, Maritime Museum, Navy Museum, People's Museum, Prison Museum, Pulau Besar Museum, Stamp Museum, Straits Chinese Jewellery Museum, Submarine Museum, Toy Museum, Tradition and Custom Museum, UMNO Museum, World's Bees Museum and Youth Museum.
