United Kingdom Buildings Preservation Trust, (UKHBPT) is an independent charity which specialises in the restoration and rejuvenation of heritage buildings at risk of decay or demolition.
UKHBPT’s objective is to transform these historic buildings into local assets, creating job opportunities and catalysing wider social and economic benefit. HRH The Prince of Wales is UKHBPT's founding patron.
UKHBPT owns and manages Middleport Pottery in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent. Middleport Pottery was built by Burgess and Leigh in the late nineteenth century and is the home of Burleigh pottery. It is the oldest working pottery in the United Kingdom. The pottery was acquired by the Trust in 2011 through a mixture of public and private funding and was fully restored by the Trust and opened to the public in 2014.
The business developed by UKHBPT ensures the long-term sustainability of the site, which, in addition to the production of the Burleigh pottery range, encompasses heritage and craft-based operations, including a visitor centre, café and other activities. Middleport Pottery is a model for future regeneration and preservation projects, having a significant and beneficial impact on the local community.

VIDEO DIARY: HRH PRINCE CHARLES AND JOHN CAUDWELL AT BURLEIGH POTTERY.
Entrepreneur John Caudwell, who built one of the UK's most successful mobile phone businesses, creating thousands of jobs in Stoke-on-Trent, has committed a significant six-figure sum to a project by The Prince's Regeneration Trust for the conservation and regeneration of Middleport Pottery in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire.
John toured the factory on Tuesday, October 25, 2011 with His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, President of The Prince's Regeneration Trust, to learn about the project and its wider regeneration objectives. The project at Middleport will create local jobs, attract new business to the area and production of the world-renowned blue and white Burleighware will remain in Stoke-on-Trent.
In an era of an invisible and largely electronic economy, it is sometimes easy to forget that everything we know today was built on an industrial and manufacturing revolution, which bred incredible craftsmen and products, and made Britain a manufacturing powerhouse. Coming from an engineering background myself, I really appreciate the skills required in making and producing quality products, said John Caudwell.
Making pottery is an ancient industry; we touch and use the products of the pottery industry thousands of times a day -- which perhaps dilutes our recognition of their significance.
The pottery products of Stoke-on-Trent are something very special, often imitated but never matched. But the products of Middleport Pottery are not just special, they represent the products of the Stoke-on-Trent pottery industry at its very best.
Nowhere else on earth are the skills and craftsmanship of working with clay, water, heat and colour so deeply embedded in the DNA of the population. It is crucial that such craftsmanship is preserved in Stoke-on-Trent, and so I am delighted to be making a contribution to the recovery, maintenance and growth of a vital local industry.
In 2006, John Caudwell sold his 10,000-employee mobile phone business, which included Phones 4u, for £1.5bn. John now concentrates on charitable and philanthropic work including Caudwell Children @caudwellkids.

Poppies: Weeping Window at Middleport Pottery
Poppies: Weeping Window is a cascade comprising several thousand handmade ceramic poppies.
Middleport Pottery’s historic Grade II* listed site was built in 1888 for a well-known local ceramics company, Burgess & Leigh Limited. It has maintained unbroken pottery production since its Victorian inception. In June 2011, The United Kingdom Historic Building Preservation Trust (UKHBPT) stepped in to restore Middleport Pottery after the buildings had fallen into disrepair, and embarked on a £9 million, three-year project to regenerate and revitalise the site. In June 2014, HRH The Prince of Wales opened the refurbished Middleport Pottery, now containing the Burleigh factory, Visitor Centre, Tea Rooms, shop, activity areas and workshops and offices for creative businesses. Today, Middleport Pottery is a thriving, exciting visitor destination, and continues as the last working Victorian pottery in the United Kingdom.
