Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie & bunkers - Chicago hikes
If you're into prairie hiking, Midewin is a nice place where you can see bison up close if you're lucky. We saw NONE. They must have all been in hiding..?. ;)
There are also old concrete bunkers here, some of which you can explore (the door will be open).
Beware of ticks and wild parsnip, and don't go on a hot day - a prairie means no shade! ;)

West side of Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie. Between Elwood and Wilmington near historic Route 66 in Illinois. Midewin is the largest tallgrass prairie east of the Mississippi River.
Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie Bison Wilmington Catfish Parade Grand Marshal
The Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie Bison served as Grand Marshals for the 2016 Wilmington Catfish Days Parade.
The bison roam at the U.S. Forest Service Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie located just north of Wilmington on Rt. 53, Historic Route 66. Midewin is the first national tallgrass prairie in the U.S.
The bison float features several beautiful native prairie plants, such as the compass plant.
Something UNEXPECTED Found at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie
Took a 2-hour drive down to Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie to photograph some rare grassland birds of northern Illinois, after a very rare Painted Bunting was sighted there. While we never saw the bunting, 6 amazing birds were added to my State Life-list (Bringing it up to 243 species) and I saw a Summer Tanager- the first to turn up in that part of the preserve. Follow along as I try to photograph these amazing birds!
We switched drivers for the last 20min so I could capture some B-roll of the drive down.

Hedgeapple Trail, Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie
Some fallen hedge hedge apples from osage orange trees in Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie. The trees are native to Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas and were used in the Midwest as a living fence.
You can see the line of osage orange trees planted next to each other to create a barrier for livestock.

Bison and Fossils - Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie
Located just a bit south of Chicago, Illinois, Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie has something unexpected-- a herd of bison. Introduced in 2015, they are the star attraction. Apart from the bison, hiking trails, fossil exhibits, and a variety of birds bring visitors to the area.

Prescribed burn after sunset at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie
On April 5, 2015, the U.S. Forest Service did prescribed burns over more than 2,000 acres on the west side of Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie in Will County, Illinois, where the Wetlands Initiative (TWI) is a restoration partner. TWI friend Mark Marquis captured this awesome video footage from a helicopter. Come visit Midewin in the summer to see how the burns have helped the native prairie flora to flourish!
