In Beijing with my Beijing Family
Family time for my dumpling and I means heading to the dumpling motherland, Beijing, China. I don’t speak Chinese, and so mostly all I do is just watch what goes on around me…and eat! Chinese food is so good.
Lots of surprises:
- Pet grasshoppers are common in households
- Expect to run for trains when you don't have a reservation.
- Cupping - an ancient form of massage, you can get it on the bottom of your feet
- At night, older people gather and dance around music. This is so cool!
- Chinese whipping tops - They whip spinning tops like Indiana Jones
- Eat insects - apparently a tourist thing. I have only witnessed tourists eating these...never the locals.
- Eating family style - you always share food together. I love this because you get to try so much stuff and it magically creates more conversation, IMO
- Great Wall of China - apparently they do marathons on this thing. It's huge! And super crowded during holidays
- Chinese medicine balls - made from natural herbs that taste minty. I was using this because I had a sore throat. I would totally use these more often if they sold elsewhere.
- Always be running - China is a fast paced country. If you want to use public transportation, be ready to run.

???????? BEIJING VLOG: Great Wall of China Mutianyu + Da Dong Roast Duck 北京,慕田峪长城,大董烤鸭
We're so excited to explore the Great Wall of China! We went to the Mutianyu section during a weekday in the winter, so there were barely anyone around. It is so amazing to learn that the majestic structure was built thousands of years ago! We then headed to the Beijing Olympic Park to walk around and then it's off to Da Dong to meet Yanshu's cousins for dinner. The roast duck was definitely the highlight of our meal! They blew air into the duck which caused the skin to separate from the meat. We really enjoyed eating the skin dipped in sugar and wrapping the duck in pancakes! It was truly a memorable meal and thank you so much Huang Yan and Yinsheng for treating us! Afterwards we walked around the Wangfujing street, and chanced upon what Mike would call a public dance party happening in front of a church. The actual term is plaza dancing or square dancing 广场舞 where mostly middle aged and elder Chinese people would gather in public places and dance as a way to relax and exercise. We thoroughly enjoyed our first full day in Beijing, and can't wait to share the rest of our China trips with you =]!
In this three week vacation, we took six flights and various other types of transportation, and visited Manila, Coron, Beijing, Kunming, and Dali before heading back to the US. We can't wait to share the rest of this awesome trip with you, and would love to hear your feedback in the comment box below =]. Thanks!

The presence of eunuchs in the Chinese court was part of a long-standing tradition. These emasculated men frequently served as menial workers, spies and harem watchdogs in ancient society. Over time, eunuchs serving in government roles began to exert enough influence with emperors that they could control state affairs or even orchestrate the fall of a dynasty.

Pompeo meets Chinese President Xi in Beijing
(14 Jun 2018) US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Thursday, following US President Donald Trump's historic summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore.
Pompeo is on a briefing tour to update top officials in Korea, Japan, and China about the summit.
He first stopped by Seoul to debrief top Korean and Japanese diplomats, working to paper over any semblance of disagreement over President Donald Trump's concession to Kim Jong Un that the US will halt military exercises with South Korea.
Pompeo insisted the president hadn't backed down from his firm line on North Korea's nukes.
Pompeo then flew to Beijing to meet Xi, whose country, China, is believed to wield considerable influence with North Korea as its chief ally and economic lifeline.
Both Pompeo and Xi praised the personal friendship between Trump and Xi, as well as continuous exchanges between the US and China.
During Pompeo's visit to Korea, there were persistent questions about whether Trump had given away too much in return for too little among Korean and Japanese officials.

Beijing Capital Airport...
Old Beijing makes way for modernization
Having survived the tumultuous changes that China has undergone over the past century, many of Beijing's old neighborhood still stood firm during the early 1990s. It was a miracle that the Chinese capital's iconic narrow alleyways and courtyards had been left unscathed by wars, fires, and human interference. However, in recent years the hutongs have been defenseless against the forces of modernization.
As one by one, these ancient structures have been flattened to make way for high-rises, shopping malls, and widened avenues. In today's China View, we meet Michael Meyer, author of The last days of old Beijing who shares his views on urban planning and Beijing's cultural preservation.
Spicy Cumin Lamb Noodles at Xi'an Famous Foods & Flushing New York City Chinese Food Tour!
Xi'an Famous Foods serves amazing food in Flushing, Queens, NYC!

On Day 31 of our Round The World Trip with Star Alliance we decided to take a New York City food tour to Flushing. The main thing I wanted to eat was at the famous Xi'an Famous Foods for their spicy cumin lamb noodles. But we also enjoyed some incredible dumplings and a rack of cumin coated lamb. It was incredible.
00:22 Journey to Flushing, Queens - The first part of the day was to take the train from Manhattan out to Queens, and more specifically to Flushing. It takes a while, but it’s pretty straightforward to get there by public transportation.
1:42 Xi'an Famous Foods - Located in the basement of the Golden Shopping Mall in Flushing, Queens, Xi'an Famous Foods is a well known Chinese food restaurant with a number of branches throughout New York City. Xi'an Famous Foods was one of the top places I wanted to eat in NYC. At the bottom of the shopping center there’s a nice food court, and it really does feel like you transport yourself from NYC to China. I ordered the spicy cumin lamb noodles and an extra side of spicy cucumber salad. The spicy cumin lamb, with hand pulled noodles, was absolutely incredible - one of the best food dishes I ate in all of New York. And the spicy cucumber salad also went superbly with the noodles. The chili oil and the cumin was just absolutely superb. Total price - $15.51
6:56 Tianjin Dumpling House - Next up in the same Golden Shopping Mall, I walked over to Tianjin Dumpling House and I ordered their classic pork dumplings. Although you could choose from a range of many different types of dumplings. Overall, they were pretty good and I liked how they were cooked fresh so they were piping hot. Pork dumplings - $5
10:28 White Bear - For won ton lovers in New York City, taking a trip to White Bear in Flushing, Queens, is one of the food lovers pilgrimages. So after the spicy cumin lamb noodles we walked over to white bear. The won tons came with hot chili oil on top and an assortment of mostly pickled mustard greens. Although the chili wasn’t spicy, but was extremely fragrant and tasted amazing. It was another delicious places of dumplings in Flushing. Wonton with hot sauce - $5.50
13:35 Fu Run Restaurant - Finally, our last Chinese food meal in Flushing, we decided to sit down at a restaurant called Fu Run. Along with hot and sour soup and fries string beans, what I really wanted to try at Fu Run Restaurant were the Muslim lamb chops, fried and seasoned with an abundance of garlic and cumin. They were absolutely awesome, fall apart tender lamb, crispy on the edges and just coated in toasted crispy cumin seeds. Although some people say the quality of the Muslim Chinese lamb chops at Fu Run has gone down, I thought they were still absolutely superb. Though I’d like to try the same dish from other restaurants in Flushing, next time I’m in Queens. Total price - $49.50
19:14 Times Square station - Central Park - After coming back from our food trip to Flushing, Queens, we then took a walk around Central Park, just enjoying New York City.
21:03 Fresh&Co - For dinner, since I think I had eaten my share of meat for the day, I decided to go vegetarian and had a salad. Although it was too expensive, it was pretty good. Gaucho salad - $9.95

STORYLINE
North Korea's premier enjoyed a tour of Asia's largest beer complex in Beijing on Wednesday amid renewed signs of willingness from the North to return to nuclear talks.
Chinese officials say that premier Pak Pong Ju has told them that Pyongyang might be willing to return to the six-party talks, despite the North's threat to indefinitely boycott the dialogue and claims that it has expanded its atomic arsenal.
The visit comes amid increased international efforts to encourage North Korea back to the negotiating table.
Chinese leaders also appear to be using the trip to lobby the North to speed up Chinese-style reforms in hopes of reviving its frail economy and reduce its dependence on foreign food aid.
Pak and his Chinese counterpart Wen Jiabao signed an agreement on Tuesday on investment protection, but the two sides didn't release any details.
On Wednesday, Pak toured Yanjing Beer, a Beijing brewery run by one of China's biggest beer producers.
Led by the chairman the brewery, Pak toured the fermentation rooms and an assembly line where bottles were being packed.
There's a close relationship between the beer industry and people's living standards, Pak commented at the end of his tour.
North Korea has grabbed headlines over its recent foray into economic reforms introduced in 2002.
The North is looking for ways to alleviate chronic hunger that have plagued the country for decades.
Pak was expected to meet Chinese President Hu Jintao later on Wednesday.

Mike's in Hong Kong- City tour by train
While on business in China I took a day off to check out Hong Kong for the first time. I stayed in the province of Schenzen, China which is the closest city to Hong Kong. Getting there was really simple. Don't take the expensoive tour bus. I spent less than a $1USD to ride the underground to the immigration border then take the Hongnese train system to tour the city. SPent $30US for a all day pass.

Four injured in Beijing overpass collapse
An overpass connecting two buildings of a furniture mall in northern Beijing collapsed Sunday afternoon, leaving four people injured, local authorities said.
The corridor outside a Red Star Macalline Furniture Mall in northern Chaoyang District collapsed at about 4 p.m., the district government said.
The four injured have been sent to hospital and they are in stable condition.
Residents nearby told Xinhua that taxi drivers and vendors often rest in the shade of the corridor.
Excavators have arrived to help clear the site.
