Miller House and Garden
Miller House and Garden
A classic of modern horticulture, unsurpassed in the United States... -- The Magazine Antiques The IMA has acquired the landmark Miller House and Garden in Columbus, Indiana. One of the countrys most highly regarded examples of mid-century Modernist residences, the Miller House was designed by Eero Saarinen, with interiors by Alexander Girard, and landscape design by Daniel Urban Kiley. Members of the Miller family have donated the house and gardens with many of its original furnishings to the Museum. The Miller family and the Irwin-Sweeney-Miller Foundation have also made a $5 million lead gift toward an $8 million operating endowment for the house and surrounding grounds. The IMA is raising $3 million for the remainder of the endowment and $2 million for the 18-month renovation of the house, which will entail a careful restoration of many of the original period details. Once the renovation is completed, the IMA will work with the Columbus Area Visitors Center to offer public access to the house and gardens. Designated as a National Historic Landmark in 2000, the house expands upon an architectural tradition developed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe—epitomizing the international Modernist aesthetic—with an open and flowing layout, flat roof and vast stone and glass walls. The IMA plans to open Miller House and Garden in 2012.
The Miller House
(10/1/11) Commissioned by industrialist and philanthropist J. Irwin Miller and his wife Xenia Simons Miller in 1953, Miller House expands upon an architectural tradition developed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe—epitomizing the international Modernist aesthetic—with an open and flowing layout, flat roof and stone and glass walls. The garden of Miller House was a canvas on which Landscape Architect Dan Kiley expanded Saarinen's architectural vision to the landscape. (October 2011)

Columbus Indiana Architecture Story
Athens of the Prairie: How Columbus, Indiana Got Great Architecture
Columbus, Indiana is a city of around 40,000 people located an hour south of Indianapolis. Columbus is exactly the kind of city you'd expect to find in the Midwest, except for one curious thing. The American Institute of Architects has ranked Columbus 6th in the nation for architectural innovation and design, right behind New York, Chicago, Boston, San Francisco and Washington, DC.
The architectural richness of Columbus isn't the result of some visionary planning board. Nor are the zoning laws in Columbus different than those in most other Indiana cities. Columbus has fascinating architecture because in the 1950s industrialist and philanthropist J. Irwin Miller (of the Cummins Engine Company) decided that he wanted to live in a more visually interesting city. To this end, Miller offered to pay the architect's bill for any new public building in Columbus. Today, Columbus boasts more than 70 buildings designed by internationally celebrated architects like I.M. Pei, Eliel Saarinen, Eero Saarinen, Richard Meier and Harry Weese.
One man's philanthropy sparked, as Bradley Brooks of the Indianapolis Museum of Art puts it, an idea that is moving a community forward.

Abandoned Sap’s Donut Mill Columbus, Indiana “World’s Best Selling Donut” Dolly Madison
Saps Donut Mill, (Saps Bakery) was located at National Road and Central Avenue in Columbus, Indiana. Philip R. “Sap” Essex and his brother Tom Essex began making doughnuts in downtown Columbus in 1948. In 1960 the Essex Brother built “Saps Donut Mill” at this location. Sap’s Donuts were touted as the “World’s Best-Selling Donut”, and ask anyone from Columbus and they will tell you that’s true. In 1972 Sap’s merged with Beatrice Foods. Then in 1979 Interstate Brands purchased the plant, and that later became Hostess. The parent company Hostess Brands operated the snack cake plant as Dolly Madison Bakery. Flower Foods (Wonder, Nature’s Own, Bunny, Sunbeam), bought the plant and decided not to continue operation of the plant. A stipulation to selling the property was the plant could not be operated as a bakery, so the plant would not fall into competitor’s hands, the plant was closed.
