Driving the Million Dollar Highway - Silverton to Ouray, Colorado in 4K Ultra HD
Million Dollar Highway, part of the San Juan Skyway is one of the nation’s most spectacular drives. Forget standard driving safety measures like guardrails and shoulders, there aren't any on this stretch. From Durango, through Silverton and Ouray, to Ridgway, the highway delivers jaw-dropping vista after vista. It was cut from the side of the mountain and became know as the Million Dollar Highway. It's one of the most scenic drives in the USA. The Million Dollar Highway stretches for about 25 miles (40 km) in western Colorado and follows the route of U.S. 550 between Silverton and Ouray, Colorado. It is part of the San Juan Skyway. Between Durango and Silverton the Skyway loosely parallels the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. The road climbs up to 3 very high mountain passes. Coal Bank Pass (10,640 ft /3,240 m); Molas Pass (10,970 ft /3,340 m) and Red Mountain Pass (11,018 ft /3,358 m).

The Most Dangerous Road in America - The Million Dollar Highway
The Million Dollar Highway is a spur of U.S. Highway 50, Also known as U.S. 550. The stretch from Silverton to Ouray is frequently called the Million Dollar Highway, but it goes by other names; such as the “Scenic Byway”. If you are being dramatic it’s referred to as the “Highway to Hell”.
The road has made its way to several large publications and most dangerous lists. Popular Mechanics ranked it Number 3 of 10of the “Most Dangerous Roadways”. It is the only road in the continental US ranked by USA Today’s list of the “World's Most Dangerous Roads”. The automotive blog RoadCrazed and the DangerousRoads.org Rank the Million Dollar Highway as the most dangerous road worldwide. If you are measuring how dangerous a road is by the number of fatal accidents that happened on it the Million Dollar Highway is the winner, with no contest. This is especially astonishing when we consider war zone roads, such as; Kabul-Jalalabad Highway (Afghanistan) and Nanga Parbat Pass (Pakistan) were included in most publications, considerations, and lists. Perhaps, the “Highway to Hell” isn’t such a bad name after all?

Ouray Colorado to Silverton Colorado along the Million Dollar Highway
We will take you on a five minute road trip between Ouray, Colorado and Silverton, Colorado along the Million Dollar Highway. We took this day trip while camping out at the Ouray RV Park and Cabins. You will see old mine shafts that date back to the 1800's Tailings from the old mines. Miners houses and some very beautiful country.
The Switzerland of America - along the back roads and Scenic Byways: you can see vistas where old Hollywood westerns were filmed and explore high country ghost towns that were once booming mining cities. Ouray is also known as “The Jeeping Capital of the World.” Regardless of the season or the purpose of your visit, a trip to the famous, sulfur-free Ouray Hot Springs Pool is always a treat. With nearly one-million gallons of naturally heated water from deep in the earth, the hot springs pool has been a soothing destination for generations.
The Million Dollar Highway delivers jaw-dropping vista after vista. It was cut from the side of the mountain and became know as the Million Dollar Highway. It's one of the most scenic drives in the USA. There are several legends, though, including that it cost a million dollars a mile to build it, this is in the 1800's and that its fill dirt contains a million dollars in gold ore.

Million Dollar Highway near Silverton
Riding the Million Dollar Highway from Ouray to Durango, Colorado in September , 2016.
U.S. Route 550 (US 550) is a spur of U.S. Highway 50 that runs from Bernalillo, New Mexico to Montrose, Colorado in the western United States. The section from Silverton to Ouray is frequently called the Million Dollar Highway.
The Million Dollar Highway stretches for about 25 miles (40 km) in western Colorado and follows the route of U.S. 550 between Silverton and Ouray, Colorado. It is part of the San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway. Between Durango and Silverton the Skyway loosely parallels the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.
Though the entire stretch has been called the Million Dollar Highway, it is really the twelve miles (19 km) south of Ouray through the Uncompahgre Gorge to the summit of Red Mountain Pass which gains the highway its name. This stretch through the gorge is challenging and potentially hazardous to drive; it is characterized by steep cliffs, narrow lanes, and a lack of guardrails; the ascent of Red Mountain Pass is marked with a number of hairpin curves used to gain elevation, and again, narrow lanes for traffic—many cut directly into the sides of mountains. During this ascent, the remains of the Idarado Mine are visible. Travel north from Silverton to Ouray allows drivers to hug the inside of curves; travel south from Ouray to Silverton perches drivers on the vertiginous outside edge of the highway. Large RVs travel in both directions, which adds a degree of excitement (or danger) to people in cars.[6] The road is kept open year-round. Summer temperatures can range from 70–90 °F highs at the ends of the highway to 50–70 °F in the mountain passes. The snow season starts in October, and snow will often close the road in winter. Chains may be required to drive.[7]
A Snowy Drive over Million Dollar Highway: Red Mountain Pass, Ouray to Silverton
Luv 2 Drivelapse? - Like for updates & great travel ideas
This drive is a round-trip, beginning and ending in Ouray, Colorado. It follows US Highway 550, the Million Dollar Highway, south, over Red Mountain Pass to Silverton, then returns via the same route.
At first I was disappointed that it was raining in Ouray and Silverton, but the weather was actually quite amazing. Clouds hung low over the mountain peaks, creating a foreboding mood amongst the fall colors in early October. At the pass, above 11,000 feet, it was pouring the snow, creating a beautiful scene.
You'll have to put up with my wiper blades, but I hope you can enjoy the beauty of this drive, on a not-so-perfect day.
