Wisconsin Center District & Uline
Welcome to this week’s fastest minute in construction. I’m Nate Beck, Daily Reporter staff writer.
Let’s dig into the news
The Wisconsin Center District is seeking bidders for a construction manager to lead a $300 million expansion of the downtown milwaukee event space.
The board that oversees the Wisconsin Center has been planning the expansion for months and on monday issued an invitation to bid for general contractors.
The project calls for an expansion and modernization of the space that’s expected to break ground in early 2021.
----------------------------
Distribution giant Uline is planning a $130 million expansion of its campus along Interstate 94 in Kenosha County.
The company submitted documents to the city of kenosha laying out plans to build a nearly 1.1 million square foot building and another 643,000 square foot building to complete a four-building complex it operates along I-94.
Uline has grown rapidly since announcing it would move its headquarters to Kenosha County from illinois in 2010. It’s latest expansion plans will bring the company’s footprint in the county to more than 5 million square feet.
----------------------------
A long-dormant commission that plans some of the state’s biggest highway projects will meet next week.
The Transportation Projects Commission will reconvene for the first time in five years on Friday after a break that stunted planning for some long-contemplated highway projects.
In the commission’s absence, three major projects are on-hold indefinately, and officials cancelled plans for an expansion of Interstate 39/90 between madison and the Wisconsin Dells.
That’s it for this week’s punch list, we’ll see you next week.

Foxconn Industrial Internet & Wisconsin Center District
Welcome back to this week’s fastest minute in construction, I’m Nate Beck, Daily Reporter staff writer.
Let’s dig into the news
Foxconn Technology Group has awarded $20 million in contracts to 17 companies for construction of a smart manufacturing complex in Racine county.
The 260,000-square-foot facility will be operated by subsidiary Foxconn Industrial Internet, or Fii, which focuses on smart manufacturing and automation. It’s part of a six-building complex that the company appears to be planning in Mount Pleasant.
Foxconn says it has now spent about $370 million on construction contracts at its 1,000-acre campus.
The latest round of awards comes amid a turbulent week for Foxconn. The company and state officials are at odds over terms of a contract that could ultimately give the company nearly $3 billion in tax incentives if it builds a $10 billion plant and hires 13,000 workers.
------------------------------------------------
The Wisconsin Center District board has picked two architects to design a $300 million overhaul of the downtown milwaukee convention center.
The board announced on Thursday that Milwaukee’s Eppstein Uhen Architects and Atlanta-based TVSdesign will plan an expanded and modernized Wisconsin Center.
Plans to rework the space have been advancing steadily this year.
Officials want to nearly double the building’s square footage in an overhaul of the 20-year-old facility.
After releasing a request for proposals in late November, the center district expects to pick a construction manager in late January. Work on the facility could begin in early 2021.
That’s it for this week’s punch list, we’ll see you next year.
Lost in the Law: Navigating Civil Legal Needs (w/ Mary Ferwada and Angela Schultz)
A program called “Lost in the Law” has provided participating lawyers with a new perspective on what it means to navigate the legal system in Wisconsin as a self-represented litigant, with little or no assistance from a lawyer.
“Lost in the Law: Navigating Civil Legal Issues in Wisconsin” is a project developed by partners at the Marquette University Law School, Legal Action of Wisconsin, New Leaders Council, and the Milwaukee Justice Center.
A role-playing game, the project educates law students and lawyers through simulations that illustrate the complex challenges that pro se litigants face. It debuted at the 2019 Equal Justice Conference in March, sponsored by the State Bar of Wisconsin.
Angela Schultz, assistant dean of public service at Marquette University Law School, and Milwaukee Justice Center Executive Director Mary Ferwerda spearheaded the program. Both were recently named 2019 Wisconsin Legal Innovators.
“The Lost in the Law Program provides on opportunity for participants to walk in the shoes of self-represented litigants,” Ferwerda notes in this video interview from the 2019 Equal Justice Conference.
Ferwerda said the Milwaukee Justice Center helps about 10,000 people per year through their services, including pro bono programs. Schultz said about 67 percent of Marquette law students provide pro bono help through the justice center.
“The Milwaukee Justice Center is able to assist those who may not qualify for representation through civil legal aid organizations,” Ferwerda said.
The center is a great resource for people in the Milwaukee area, but not all counties have similar services. “People can feel frustrated or alone,” she said.
The Lost in the Law project gives lawyers and law students a glimpse into that world, and helps promote greater involvement in available pro bono programs. Schultz said getting law students involved early can help build a “habit” of pro bono service.

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Oak Creek (#807)
[Original Airdate: February 14, 2019]
We thought we knew Oak Creek. But then we pulled up at the new town center, looked at each other and said, “Wait. THIS is Oak Creek? When did this get here?!?”
We did know some things. John knew how to get to his friend Marcus’s house. We knew that Ikea recently came to Oak Creek, that Eder Flag has been here for decades, and that GO Riteway is headquartered in and has boomed here. But we didn’t know that millions of items are screen printed each year in Oak Creek at Redwall Screen Printing, or that we could play at City 13 and feel really smart doing it. We didn’t know that the Academy of Performing Arts in Oak Creek teaches 900 kids each year. And we didn’t know that people of all religions are welcome at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin.
To us, Oak Creek will always be known as the most familiar unfamiliar place we’ve loved!

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Westosha (#505)
[Latest Airdate: October 18, 2018]
[Original Airdate: February 4, 2016]
Where? That's what we thought. Just make your way to Brass Ball Corners. Of course if you're not a local, you're still lost. So google Wilmot, Twin Lakes, Paddock Lake, Salem, Bristol... These towns and others west of I-94 within Kenosha County make up the area now known as Westosha.
But even once we got there we weren't always sure where we were. Rural Wisconsin? Lake Country? Key West Florida? Small Town USA? 16th Century England? Within Westosha, you can feel like you are in any or all of those places.
What did we find? Cheese, lakes, horses, winged sprint cars, more cheese, charming small towns, more horses, waterskiing nuts, great food, the Ren Faire, scenic views that stole our breath away and people who stole our hearts.
While we were in Westosha, we often heard people describe it as the quiet side of Kenosha County. Well, John enjoyed everyone we talked to so much that he's decided to stop in more often. So be warned: it might not be the quiet side of Kenosha County for long!

Varsity soccer and football games were halted at this location in 2016 due to the poor conditions of the field, aging spectator seating, and lack of restrooms and press box. The new field surface will be safer for players.
The new Vincent stadium will allow MPS to spread soccer and football games across the city. During spring 2017, MPS schools hosted 169 girls' soccer games, and in fall 2017, MPS hosted 165 boys' soccer and 70 varsity football games.
With the planned improvements, MPS will have opportunities to host WIAA tournament soccer, football and track competitions, as well as MPS conference relays and conference outdoor track meets.
The stadium will be ready for play in spring 2019. The total project cost estimate for the stadium, including all design, construction and inspection, is $5,656,791. The contract has been awarded to Nicholas & Associates, Inc.
The project is funded through the MPS construction fund and includes dollars carried over from the local tax levy/capital projects fund balance. Funding will also come from district borrowed funds and qualified school construction bonds. Over the next year, MPS will invest more than $11 million in the improvement of its athletic and recreation facilities.
Many opportunities will become available for naming rights and sponsorships.
