The Milwaukee Public Museum, one of the largest in the United States, is a museum of human and natural history providing a dynamic and stimulating environment for learning, with something to excite and challenge visitors with a diversity of interests.
The Museum Center hosts over 700,000 visitors per year and is conveniently located in downtown Milwaukee, just minutes from the interstate.
From its modest beginnings in 1882, the Milwaukee Public Museum currently houses over 4.5 million specimens. Permanent exhibits are contained in three and a half floors of exhibit area, with additional space for traveling and temporary exhibits. Tour the Museum's 150,000 square feet of exhibit space to visit Africa, Asia, Europe, the Arctic, South and Middle America, the Pacific Islands and a Costa Rican Rainforest.
Take a small step back in time to the turn-of-the-century Streets of Old Milwaukee and European Village and to ancient Mediterranean civilizations. Or, take a giant leap back more than 65 million years to The Third Planet, see the world's largest-known dinosaur skull and a life-sized replica of Tyrannosaurus rex. Stroll amid free-flying butterflies from around the world in The Puelicher Butterfly Wing.

A Huge, Ancient Exhibit at Milwaukee Public Museum
Milwaukee Public Museum is hosting Maya: Hidden Worlds Revealed, the largest exhibition about the ancient Maya ever to be displayed in the United States right now through May 28. The exhibit is combination of hundreds of authentic artifacts, immersive environments, and hands-on activities that recreates the Maya life for the visitor. Joining us with just a taste of what you can expect is MPM's Curator Emeritus, Carter Lupton. Maya: Hidden Worlds Revealed is going on at the Milwaukee Public Museum now through May 28. Para recorrer el mundo se requiere de tiempo y planeación, pero recorrerlo a través de un museo está al alcance de algunos como nosotros que tenemos la fortuna de contar con el Museo Público de Milwaukee, un museo que podríamos decir es patrimonio histórico de la ciudad de Milwaukee, ya que sus orígenes datan del año 1882.
En el museo podrás visitar las exhibiciones esparcidas en tres pisos y medio en un área de 150,000 pies cuadrados además de un espacio especial para las exhibiciones temporales. Algunas de las exhibiciones que podrás visitar para que te des una idea de todo lo que podrás ver son relacionadas a África, Asia, Europa, Ártico, Sudamérica y América Central, Las Islas del Pacifico y la selva de Costa Rica. Digamos que la vuelta al mundo en mucho menos de 80 días!
Entre otras de las muchas exhibiciones que ofrece el Museo Público de Milwaukee, están las muestras de las civilizaciones mediterráneas antiguas, el tercer planeta – como era el mundo hace 65 millones de años-, un recorrido por América del Norte y sus culturas. Habitats desde Wisconsin hasta el norte de Florida, los desiertos del sur y la costa del Noroeste. Habrá mucho que ver y aprender también de más de 25 siglos de arte y tecnología en el mezzanine de América Pre-Colombiana. Y por supuesto, una muestra del océano sin luz con peces luminosos.
Para mí, visitar el museo es casi como volver a ser estudiante en tan sólo unas horas, desde la primaria hasta la preparatoria porque puedes recordar todo lo que se aprendió en esas materias de la escuela. Claro que ahora en un ambiente casual, divertido y experimental, sin la presión de tomar el examen!... Y para los niños, es una gran experiencia porque pueden ver lo que actualmente están aprendiendo en la escuela!
Unas de nuestras exhibiciones favoritas fueron la exhibición de Costa Rica que muestra todo lo que la selva de ese país ofrece como material para ser estudiado por los científicos. También nos encantó ver las calles del viejo Milwaukee, donde las primeras culturas europeas en vivir en Wisconsin se ven ejemplificadas con gran detalle. Vale decir que muchas de estas culturas aún celebran esa herencia histórica y cultural en los famosísimos festivales de verano en Milwaukee.
Cuando vlogeamos, no pudimos capturar con la cámara el planetario (por la obscuridad) ni las mariposas (porque se empana el lente), pero son una parada indispensable cuando visites el museo! En el planetario, la pantalla circular gigante hará ver los documentales y películas en una dimensión increíble! La exhibición de las mariposas es una muestra de mariposas del mundo en un ambiente propicio creado para que éstas puedan vivir y reproducirse, ahí las veras volando y reposando.
El museo cuenta con cafetería-restaurante, y también ofrece un área con mesas y sillas, donde puedes comer la comida comprada en el lugar o el lunch que hayas traído… Y para todas las familias es importantísimo saber que el programa Kohls Thank You, ofrece entrada general gratis los jueves primeros de cada mes. El horario en estos días es de 9am a 8pm.
Te sugiero que visites la página del museo para que te enteres de la gran cantidad de programas y eventos que ahí se ofrecen para chicos y grandes, pijamadas, diversas exhibiciones temporales y campamentos de verano. Recuerda visitar la tienda de regalitos al salir, porque además de contar con juguetes educativos, cuenta también con artículos representativos de diferentes culturas.
Esta visita y experiencia al museo nos recordó lo que es ser niños, que la imaginación puede echarse a volar y puedes transportarte a otras épocas del tiempo y lugares llenos de riqueza en tan solo un instante!

Historian John Gurda explores how the Milwaukee River and Lake Michigan spurred Milwaukee's growth. The settlers used rivers and Lake Michigan to transport grain, lumber, leather and beer, but water was just as important for play as it was for work. Gurda explains how the Milwaukee River became a destination for fun. Learn how the lower Milwaukee River was eventually reduced to an open sewer by 1900, with Lake Michigan suffering similar indignities. Only in recent decades have the currents turned for the better. From the Milwaukee River Greenway to the reborn Menomonee Valley to the cultural theme park on our downtown lakefront, the patterns of the past are being reversed, providing cause for celebration as well as concern.

Milwaukee is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin on Lake Michigan's western shore. It's known for its breweries, many of which offer tours chronicling its role in the beer industry. Overlooking the Menomonee River, the Harley-Davidson Museum displays classic motorcycles, including one of Elvis Presley’s. Nearby is the Milwaukee Public Museum, with its large-scale European Village and a recreation of old Milwaukee.
Milwaukee has historically been a major immigrant city. During the early 20th Century, German and Polish immigrants tended to dominate, and the city still strongly identifies with its German and, to a slightly lesser extent, Polish heritage. For part of the early 20th century German was even the main language of the city, and German names are still very common.
Milwaukee is home to some instantly recognized corporations such as Miller Brewing and Harley Davidson. Harley holds an enormous celebration on every fifth anniversary during Labor Day weekend attracting riders (and celebrity riders such as Jay Leno) by the millions to Milwaukee each time. The 115th anniversary was held in 2018.
Here’s the thing about Milwaukee: it’s cool, but for some reason it slips under the radar. The city’s reputation as a working man's town of brewskis, bowling alleys and polka halls still persists. But attractions like the Calatrava-designed art museum, badass Harley-Davidson Museum and stylish eating and shopping enclaves have turned Wisconsin's largest city into an unassumingly groovy place. In summertime, festivals let loose with revelry by the lake almost every weekend. And where else on the planet will you see racing sausages?
Getting around in Milwaukee is easy. Block numbers are consistent across the city, including most of the suburbs, starting roughly where the Milwaukee and Menominee rivers meet. All numbered streets run north-south, increasing in number as you head west from 1st Street. Most named streets go east-west.

Milwaukee is the largest city in the state of Wisconsin and the fifth-largest city in the Midwestern United States. Milwaukee's estimated population in 2015 was 600,155, the Metropolitan Area has an estimated population of 2,046,692 as of 2015. Ranked by estimated 2014 population, Milwaukee is the 31st largest city in the United States.
The first Europeans to pass through the area were French Catholic missionaries and fur traders. In 1818, the French Canadian explorer Solomon Juneau settled in the area, and in 1846 Juneau's town combined with two neighboring towns to incorporate as the city of Milwaukee. Large numbers of German immigrants helped increase the city's population during the 1840s, with Poles and other immigrants arriving in the following decades.
Known for its brewing traditions, Milwaukee is currently experiencing its largest construction boom since the 1960s. Major new additions to the city in the past two decades include the Milwaukee Riverwalk, the Wisconsin Center, Miller Park, an expansion to the Milwaukee Art Museum, Milwaukee Repertory Theater, and Pier Wisconsin, as well as major renovations to the UW–Milwaukee Panther Arena, while the under-construction Wisconsin Entertainment and Sports Center is scheduled to open in 2018. In addition, many new skyscrapers, condos, lofts and apartments have been built in neighborhoods on and near the lakefront and riverbanks.

ABOUT THE AIRFIELD
It is named after United States Army Air Service General Billy Mitchell, who was raised in Milwaukee and is often regarded as the father of the United States Air Force.
The first airport terminal opened in July 1927. That month, Northwest Airlines, Inc., began air service from Milwaukee to Chicago and Minneapolis/St. Paul (MSP). In August 1927, world-renowned aviator Charles Lindbergh visited the Milwaukee airport. Kohler Aviation Corporation began providing passenger service across Lake Michigan on August 31, 1929. On March 17, 1941 the airport was renamed General Mitchell Field after Milwaukee's military airpower advocate, Brigadier General William Billy Mitchell. On January 4, 1945, Mitchell Field was leased to the War Department for use as a World War II prisoner-of-war camp. Over 3,000 prisoners and 250 enlisted men stayed at the work camp. Escaped German prisoners were often surprised to find a large German American population just beyond the fence. The present terminal opened on July 20, 1955 and was designed by Leigh Fisher and Associates. In the year 1951 the airfield processed 279.226 passengers.
ABOUT GENERAL DOUGLAS MACARTHUR
a World War II icon – with strong ties to Milwaukee, spent much of his early life here, graduating from West Division High School. A rededication ceremony on Saturday morning will mark the moving of the city’s Douglas MacArthur statue to its new home near the War Memorial.
ABOUT THE STREETCARS
The Milwaukee Electric Railway and Light Company is a defunct railroad in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States. Its Milwaukee streetcar lines ran on most major streets and served most areas of the city. The interurban lines reached throughout southeastern Wisconsin. The last streetcar to run in Milwaukee, and the entire state, operated on Wells Street on March 2, 1958. Electric locomotives continued operating at the power plants until the early 1970s. The last two remaining sections of interurban lines were to Hales Corners and Waukesha. They continued in operation until June 30, 1951 as part of the Milwaukee Rapid Transit and Speedrail Company's rapid transit service. The outer end of the East Troy branch (beyond Mukwonago) continues to operate as the East Troy Electric Railroad, a 7-mile (11 km) long heritage railroad.
