Medieval America 27: Six States from St Louis to Fargo
In this episode of my trip around America I continue my journey north in the center of the country. I traveled into six new states, and cover 1250 miles in the course of eight days traveling ever north from St. Louis Missouri all the way to Fargo North Dakota.
We stop at several castles and a major museum.
With this video and the previous video (episode 26) I went from the New Orleans at the south of America all the way north to Fargo North Dakota bifurcating the country. There was a big swing in temperate and a constant uphill climb. I also noticed now in this video that the terrain is changing there is a lot more open space with enormous open fields and gentle rolling hills, with much fewer trees. It is clear we are heading toward the prairie states.

Video Notes:
I traveled five new states over the course of eight days including
Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota
I went into Indiana and spent one night in Indianapolis. After that I moved on to Chicago Illinois
The Bean, Art Institute of Chicago
The Mars Cheese Castle in Wisconsin
Madison Wisconsin: The Morgridge Center Also known as the Red Gym, It was built in 1894 and was used as an armory and gymasium for the University of Wisconsin. It was designed in the Romanesque Revival style.
Then West on Route 18 across part of Iowa which is one of the most beautiful drives I have taken. all the way to Mason city Iowa. A little over 200 miles.
Then North into Minnesota for Minneapolis, St Paul and St cloud for four castles:
The Landmark Center in St Paul- Completed in 1902 it is also in the Romanesque Revival style but notice how different it looks because of the different stone compared to the Red Gym, (This building is pink granite ashlar) It was initially used as the State post office, courthouse and customs house.
The American Swedish Institute (The Swan Turnblad Mansion) It is built in Chateauesque style which is a revival style architecture based onFrench Renaissance Architecture. IT was completed in 1910 and is made of Bedford Limestone. It is also known as the swedish castle.
The Stanford Newel House in St. Paul It The core of the building was built in 1864 by a man named Lasher during the Civil War using locally quarried limestone. It was purchased in 1886 by Stanford Newel and upgraded with the tower and battlements added.
The UMinn NROTC Building - in Minneapolis, it is the University of Minnesota Armory. It was constructed in 1896. It originally served as the University Armory and Gymnasium. Over the years it has served various purposes and now is the home of the University Naval ROTC and gymnasium.
Fergus Falls Minnesota for the Kirkbride Building also known as the Fergus Falls State Mental Health Hospital . It is purported to be haunted. Construction was completed in 1907.
Ending in Fargo North Dakota and Unicorn Park.
Next up I will be traveling west and covering some of the Prairie States.
Yakima Sportsman State Park / RV Camping
This week our adventure took place at the Yakima Sportsman State Park. It's a great little park to get away and just take it easy. The boys and I enjoyed walking the trails which lead to the Yakima River. The boys really liked the park playground, so much so that they kept wanting to go back each day. The park was full of smooth roadways for the boys to ride their bikes and traffic was minimal. There were plenty of areas to cast your fishing pole and even though we had better luck catching lily pads, the boys enjoyed it.
Outside of the park, I recommend...
1) Yakima Valley Visitor Center - for info on ALL things to do while visiting Yakima.
2) Central Washington Agricultural Museum - FREE (donations welcome), has a playground, restrooms, and a ton of stuff to look at (inside and out).
3) Precision Fruit and Antiques - Neat little store full of antiques and the fruits is amazing (and cost friendly).
4) Any Rest Stop that states View Point.

Drive through just about any community in northeastern Minnesota during the winter months and you’re likely to find kids playing hockey. Hockey culture runs deep in the Northland, from the mini-mites learning to skate for the first time, to accomplished high school and college players striving to take their game to the highest level.

Seemed abandoned, but it had electricity and ventilation, so...
While walking through the territory of a factory, located in the industrial area of the city, I noticed a weird concrete block with a metal gate on the side of it. I opened it and a ladder climb later I was in a dark, small tunnel leading to an underground bomb shelter/safe house.

YouTubers Who Died in Waterfall Plunge Were Inspired by ‘Jackass’ Movie
A tragic waterfall accident has led to the death of three popular travel vloggers. ‘High on Life’ YouTube stars Ryker Gamble, Alexey Lyakh and Lyakh’s girlfriend, Megan Scraper, were killed Tuesday as they were on their latest adventure in Canada. Reports say the trio was at the top pool of Shannon Falls in British Columbia when Scraper slipped and fell. The three were then swept by the current and plummeted about 100 feet into the waterfall’s lower pool. All three were killed in the fall.

700 Pound Snake Pulled out of Lake in North Carolina
Giant 700 pound snake caught in lake in Proctor, North Carolina. The giant man eating python was measured at 98 feet long. Police were contacted to see if there have been any recently filed missing person reports as a snake this big could have surely eaten a human.
This giant snake is massive and just gorgeous, but it didn't take long to find out that the STORY behind it... was fake, just another hoax.
While the image is indeed real, I think the size of the giant snake could have been exaggerated due to the camera angle
Nevertheless, this snake is still huge, but where did it come from? The markings on it's skin looks similar to that of a reticulated python native to Southeast Asia. After playing around with a little Google translate, the mystery was finally solved.
This giant python came from Indonesia and after some rough translating, it turns out that it was discovered this last Thanksgiving near the village of Belinyu City. It was found by accident by a group of construction workers who severely injured the reptile while knocking down a large dead tree in which the python was sleeping inside of. The workers put the dying snake out of it's misery and buried it.
It's sad to see such an incredible animal killed, especially one that could have been a new world record size. I wish there were more pictures so we could get a better idea of just how large it was.
I really enjoyed learning about this amazing snake, if you guys have any cool wildlife stories or interesting animals that you think I might enjoy, tell me about it on Facebook

inFact: Fish Raining from the Sky
For centuries, fish are reported to have fallen from the sky, and science tells us waterspouts are the cause. Is this really what's going on?
Even today, it occasionally pops up in the news: fish fell out of the sky onto a village in India or a golf course in Florida. How can such a thing be?! The news tells us that, too: waterspouts from a storm at sea, suck fish up out of the water, carry them inland on strong, high-altitude winds, and drop them inland, far away from the storm.
And, for some reason, people have been believing this.
Here's the real story. The fish DON'T fall from the sky, and waterspouts DON'T have any ability to lift anything, and there is no magical horizontal conveyor belt in the upper atmosphere for fish or anything else.
The visible column of a tornadic waterspout is not an upward-flowing elevator of water. Even the ultimate suction of a pure vacuum can only lift water about 10 meters, and it requires a solid-walled tube to do so. The waterspout's column is simply water vapor which collects in the center because it's less dense than air. The winds in a waterspout move around horizontally, not vertically. Below the surface of the water, nothing is disturbed. People snorkeling have had waterspouts travel right over them, and not even been aware that anything happened. Nothing reached down into the water, lifted them, and hoisted them aloft.
There's always been a simpler explanation, one for which plenty of hard evidence has always been abundant. The fish were already on the ground, and seeing them out of place, a person assumed they had to have fallen out of the sky.
Many fish, surprisingly, do travel over dry ground. There are several species of walking catfish, native to Southeast Asia but now an invasive species worldwide including the United States. It crosses dry land to find food or better habitats. There are 32 species of mudskippers worldwide, that come out of the water to feed and court. But the kings of fish fall reports are the 34 species of climbing perch found throughout Asia and Africa; they have a small chamber that acts like a lung and they walk using their gill plates.
Most people haven't heard of these; and when you come upon a group of catfish or perch in the middle of a field, the next thing you know is that someone has called the newspapers to report fish falling out of the sky.
