Skylon Tower, Niagara Falls -Elevator ride, spectacular views of the Falls
The Skylon Tower, in Niagara Falls, Ontario, is an observation tower that overlooks both the American Falls, New York, and the larger Horseshoe Falls, Ontario, from the Canadian side of the Niagara River.
Standing at 160 metres (520 ft) from street level and 236 metres (775 ft) from the bottom of the falls, the tower required approval from both Canadian and United States air transport authorities, due to its proximity to the international boundary. It was the second tower to be built using the slipform method, in which concrete is continually poured into a form moving slowly up the tower. It was built by Pigott Construction of Hamilton, Ontario. The same methods were also used to build the Inco Superstack in Sudbury, and the CN Tower in Toronto.
The tower has two restaurants at its top, the lower Revolving Dining Room and the upper Summit Suite Buffet. The Revolving Dining Room seats 276 people and revolves once every hour by resting on a circular rail that is propelled by a 3 horsepower (2.2 kW) motor. An observation deck sits at the tower's summit. The base of the tower features a number of gift shops, fast food restaurants and a large amusement arcade. A floor for conventions is also available, but is seldom utilized.
Der Skylon Tower ist ein in den Jahren 1964 bis 1965 erbauter, 160 Meter hoher Aussichtsturm in Stahlbetonbauweise in Niagara Falls, Kanada. Der Turm steht unweit des drei Jahre früher errichteten Aussichtsturms Konica Minolta Tower.
Der Aussichtsturm verfügt über zwei Restaurants für bis zu 270 Personen und eine Boutique. Der Turm hat eine Gesamthöhe von 160 Meter. Der Turm steht auf einem Sockel, der aus einem mehrstöckigen Gebäude mit hexagonalem Grundriss besteht. Das Fundament gründet bis 15 m unter der Erde und wiegt 6000 Tonnen. Der Skylon Tower steht auf einem kleinen Hügel (229 m über den Niagarafällen) in der Innenstadt von Niagara Falls am westlichen Rand des Queen Victoria Park rund 200 Meter vom Ufer des Niagara River auf Höhe der Niagarafälle.
Von der Aussichtsplattform des Turmes hat man einen Überblick über die gesamten Niagarafälle und den Niagara River. Bei guter Sicht können die Ufer des Ontariosees und des Eriesees erkannt werden. Die Sichtweite wird mit bis zu 130 km bei klarer Sicht angegeben. Die Aussichtsplattform lässt sich durch drei gelbe Außenfahrstühle in 52 Sekunden erreichen. Das Treppenhaus hat bis zur Spitze 662 Treppenstufen. Die obere Kuppel des Turmkorb hat einen Durchmesser von 32,9 m und wiegt 200 Tonnen. Der Turmschaft verjüngt sich von 22,1 m auf 10,2 m Durchmesser bis unterhalb der Kuppel. Ähnlich wie der CN Tower weist der Skylon Tower drei auskragende rippenartige Standfüße auf.

On the Canadian side, Queen Victoria Park features manicured gardens, platforms offering spectacular views of both the American and Horseshoe Falls, and underground walkways leading into observation rooms which yield the illusion of being within the falling waters. The observation deck of the nearby Skylon Tower offers the highest overhead view of the Falls, and in the opposite direction gives views as far as distant Toronto. Along with the Minolta Tower (formerly the Seagrams Tower, currently the Konica Minolta Tower), it is one of two towers in Canada with a view of the Falls.

These elevators are in the process of modernization. When I was here, elevators 1 and 2 were finished, and elevator 3 was being modernized. These elevators used to have Lexan fixtures. This video was filmed on May 1, 2012.
