Pullman Bike Path in Kirkwood Atlanta, Part 1 of 2
The Pullman Bike Path is a secret trail that connects College Ave to Rogers Street in the Kirkwood neighborhood of Atlanta. The 0.5-mile path runs parallel to the CSX line that runs from Decatur to Atlanta by way of Hulsey Yard. I shot this video as I was walking westward from Decatur. In the Part 2 you will see the Pratt-Pullman Yard described below.

ABOUT KIRKWOOD
Kirkwood is a national historic designated neighborhood on the east side of Atlanta, Georgia, United States. It is a historic streetcar suburb, and was designed by architect Will Saunders. Kirkwood is situated entirely in DeKalb County, bordered by the neighborhoods of Lake Claire, East Lake, Edgewood, and Oakhurst. Kirkwood is bound on the north by DeKalb Avenue, on the south by Memorial Drive and Interstate 20, on the west by Montgomery Street, and on the east by 1st Ave.
Prior to the Civil War, the most prominent landholders in early Kirkwood were the Kirkpatrick, Dunwoody, and Clay families. The name Kirkwood was likely derived from a blending of the Kirkpatrick and Dunwoody family names.
CIVIL WAR HISTORY
There are 5 Historic Markers placed by the Georgia Historical Commission detailing major events during the Battle of Atlanta during the Civil War and examining what a pivotal role the area played in the events that unfolded.
The Marker Gresham's Division is situated on the northern side of Memorial Drive between the intersections of Clay Street and Eastside Drive. Brig. Gen. Walter Q. Gresham received a career-ending wound while on a reconnaissance mission. The marker is incorrectly identified as being in the East Atlanta community which lies south of I-20.
The Marker McPherson's Last Ride is situated near Gresham's Division and details General James B. McPhersons ride to what is currently the intersection of McPherson Ave. and Monument Dr. in East Atlanta where he was killed in action; shot while refusing to surrender in attempted escape.
The Marker Unexpected Clash at the intersection of Clifton Street and Memorial Drive, details a surprise encounter sparking some of the first shots fired in the battle of Atlanta.
The Marker Battle of Atlanta Began Here located near the intersection of Memorial Drive and Clay Streets marks the first two brigades of the North and South that would set off the battle that would leave countless soldiers and civilians dead and lead to the burning of Atlanta.
ABOUT PRATT-PULLMAN YARD
Originally built as an industrial complex by the Pratt Engineering Company in 1900, the buildings have been repurposed as both a train repair center for the Pullman Company in the 1920s and then later as an operations center for the now defunct New Georgia Railroad, which provided rail service to Athens. Since the 1990s the space has been largely abandoned except for private events and a filming location, including The Hunger Games. The property is currently owned by the State of Georgia, and is not open to the public without going through proper channels.

Georgia Police Officers Expand Search for Prison Fugitives
According to a sheriff, nearly all of the police officers in the state of Georgia are searching Tuesday for two inmates who killed two guards in a prison bus and escaped in a stolen car. According to Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills, 43-year-old Donnie Russell Rowe and 24-year-old Ricky Dubose overpowered the guards as around 30 inmates were being driven between prisons. The FBI said in a statement that the fugitives were last seen getting into a grass green, four-door 2004 Honda Civic and driving west on state Highway 16 toward Eatonton, southeast of Atlanta.

Last crew member of Enola gay dies in Georgia
ATLANTA (AP) -- The last surviving member of the crew that dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima once said he thought the bombing was necessary because it shortened the war and eliminated the need for an Allied land invasion that could have cost more lives on both sides.
But Theodore Dutch VanKirk also said it made him wary of war - and that he would like to see all of the world's atomic bombs abolished.
VanKirk died Monday at the retirement home where he lived in Stone Mountain, Georgia, his son Tom VanKirk said. He was 93.
Theodore VanKirk flew as navigator on the Enola Gay, the B-29 Superfortress that dropped the first atomic bomb deployed in wartime over the Japanese city of Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945.
The bombing hastened the end of World War II. The blast and its aftereffects killed 140,000 in Hiroshima. Three days after Hiroshima, a second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. That blast and its aftermath claimed 80,000 lives. Six days after the Nagasaki bombing, Japan surrendered.
Whether the United States should have used the atomic bomb has been debated endlessly.
I honestly believe the use of the atomic bomb saved lives in the long run, VanKirk told The Associated Press in a 2005 interview. There were a lot of lives saved. Most of the lives saved were Japanese.
But VanKirk said the experience of World War II also showed him that wars don't settle anything.
And atomic weapons don't settle anything, he said. I personally think there shouldn't be any atomic bombs in the world - I'd like to see them all abolished.
But if anyone has one, he added, I want to have one more than my enemy.
VanKirk was teamed with pilot Paul Tibbets and bombardier Tom Ferebee in Tibbets' fledgling 509th Composite Bomb Group for Special Mission No. 13.
The mission went perfectly, VanKirk told the AP. He guided the bomber through the night sky, just 15 seconds behind schedule, he said. As the 9,000-pound bomb nicknamed Little Boy fell toward the sleeping city, he and his crewmates hoped to escape with their lives.
They didn't know whether the bomb would actually work and, if it did, whether its shockwaves would rip their plane to shreds. They counted - one thousand one, one thousand two - reaching the 43 seconds they'd been told it would take for detonation, and heard nothing.
I think everybody in the plane concluded it was a dud. It seemed a lot longer than 43 seconds, VanKirk recalled.
Then came a bright flash. Then a shockwave. Then another shockwave.
VanKirk stayed on with the military for a year after the war ended. Then he went to school, earned degrees in chemical engineering and signed on with DuPont, where he stayed until he retired in 1985. He later moved from California to the Atlanta area to be near his daughter.
Like many World War II veterans, VanKirk didn't talk much about his service until much later in his life when he spoke to school groups, his son said.
I didn't even find out that he was on that mission until I was 10 years old and read some old news clippings in my grandmother's attic, Tom VanKirk told the AP in a phone interview Tuesday.
Instead, he and his three siblings treasured a wonderful father, who was a great mentor and remained active and sharp as a tack until the end of his life.
I know he was recognized as a war hero, but we just knew him as a great father, Tom VanKirk said.
VanKirk's military career was chronicled in a 2012 book, My True Course, by Suzanne Dietz. VanKirk was energetic, very bright and had a terrific sense of humor, Dietz recalled Tuesday.
Interviewing VanKirk for the book, she said, was like sitting with your father at the kitchen table listening to him tell stories.
A funeral service was scheduled for VanKirk on Aug. 5 in his hometown of Northumberland, Pennsylvania. He will be buried in Northumberland next to his wife, who died in 1975. The burial will be private.

I-Team: Petland Sues Protester
MARIETTA, Ga. - A Kennesaw pet store targeted by protesters for more than a year sued the main protest leader over what she's put on Facebook.
The Shutdown Petland in Kennesaw, Georgia Facebook page had nearly 7000 likes, many complaining the store sold puppies produced in puppy mills or often sold pets who were seriously ill.
After more than a year of sidewalk protests, this dispute finally wound up before a judge. Lamar Parker, the longtime owner of Petland Kennesaw... squared off against Karen Paul, animal lover and creator of the Facebook page that has clearly put a muzzle on the pet store's profits.
She's a stay-at-home mom who they thought could bully and harass into shutting down the page, argued her attorney Tamara Feliciano.
We're not looking to end her web page, countered Petland's attorney Nicholas Geiger. We're not looking to stop the protests. The case is about a handful of recklessly false and defamatory statements made on the webpage.
Paul started the Facebook protest page after multiple visits to the Kennesaw store, where she posted reports of seeing sick dogs, sometimes sold for as much as $4000. She claimed store employees misled customers not just on the health, but also on the breed of dog or cat they were buying. She posted pictures of 18-wheelers unloading puppies from out-of-state breeders.
When the FOX 5 I-Team made an undercover visit in July, the workers promised us certain animals wouldn't shed, even though management later admitted there was no guarantee.
And various cats experts insisted certain $1500 dollar cats advertised as designer breeds were nothing more than common housecats. Petland's response? No one had ever complained.
Just this week, the Humane Society for the United States revealed their own hidden camera investigation of Georgia pet stores. It accused Petland Kennesaw of relying on puppies from questionable breeders, including one who received an Official Warning letter from the US Department of Agriculture for violating federal minimum care veterinary regulations.
Petland of Kennesaw insisted all their puppies come from responsible, licensed breeders.
Karen Paul's attorney says she has a First Amendment right through her Facebook page to rally the community and government to take action.
Kennesaw Petland is trying to send a message to 7000 community members speaking against them, and that message is perfectly clear. said Ms. Feliciano.
But the store pointed to specific comments on the Facebook page about how they treat animals that it insists are not true. Petland Kennesaw's attorney argued those defamatory comments caused the store to lose sales and revenue and loss of goodwill in the community.
They wanted Cobb County Superior Court Judge Robert Flournoy to order Karen Paul to remove the posts, apologize and pay damages and their legal fees.
Claims that Petland employees are murdering dogs in the backroom without any sort of medication is just... completely false, said Mr. Geiger. That just doesn't happen.
Judge Flournoy said he'd rule later whether the lawsuit should be thrown out or allowed to move forward.
Being a White Student at a Historically Black College
On this episode of 'MINORITY REPORTS,' we met up with Tiago, a white freshman at Morehouse College, an HBCU in Atlanta that counts Martin Luther King, Jr. and Spike Lee as alumni.
We sat down with him to hear why he decided to enroll in the school, asked his peers for their thoughts on having white students on campus, and followed along as he showed us what it’s like to be one of very few non-black students at school.
