Always discover the smaller areas of Tokyo, because you find such hidden treasure like this!
This time, my wanderings lead me to Miyamasu Mitake Shrine in Shibuya, a not so well known Wolf Shrine. I love wolves (In case it isn't obvious!) so this was perfect!
Who would think you'd find this right in the heart of Tokyo?
Thank you so much to my friend Tomoko for informing me of this place ^-^

Mount Mitake -Tokyo - 御岳山 - 4K Ultra HD
Overlooking Mitake village and its gorge, Mt Mitake hosts on its top (929m) ryokan, houses and the beautiful Musashi Mitake Shrine. According to legend, the Musashi temple was erected over 2000 years ago, and features some gorgeous stone statues of Inari Wolf. Still according to the legend, it is said that Prince Yamato Takeru, the son of Japan’s 12th Emperor got lost in the forest of Mt Mitake after a demon transformed himself into a wild stag and led the Prince off a path. Lost and cold, the Prince was led to safety by a giant White Wolf. It is only after the prince went back home that he decided to proclaim the wolf as a deity and official guardian and protector of Mount Mitake.

Usa Jingu: One Of Japan's Most Revered Shrines
Usa Jingū (宇佐神宮), also known as Usa Hachimangū (宇佐八幡宮), is a Shinto shrine in the city of Usa in Ōita Prefecture in Japan. Emperor Ojin, who was deified as Hachiman-jin (the tutelary god of warriors), is said to be enshrined in all the sites dedicated to him; and the first and earliest of these was at Usa in the early 8th century. The Usa Jingū has long been the recipient of Imperial patronage; and its prestige is considered second only to that of Ise. The shrine was founded in Kyushu during the Nara period. Ancient records place the foundation of Usa Jingū in the Wadō era (708-714). A temple called Miroku-ji was built next to it in 779, making it what is believed to be the first shrine-temple (jingū-ji) ever. (source, Wikipedia)

Ryotan-ji Temple - Shizuoka - 龍潭寺 - 4K Ultra HD
Also located in the heart of the peaceful and beautiful Shizuoka countryside, and near Hamamatsu city, Ryotan-ji temple was founded in 744 and is one of the ancient Zen-temples from the Nara era. It had belonged to the Li family for over fourth generations.
Ryotan-ji is famous for its long and rich history and also for its amazing Zen garden and pond, Shinji Ike. Created by Enshu Kobori, which is shaped after the Chinese Kanji “Kokoro” or heart, it has a beautiful zen rock formation, as well as a unique wooden floor built by Jingoro Hidari, using the Uguisubari technique producing a creaking noise designed as a security feature.

Nihon-Ji Temple - Chiba - 日本寺 - 4K Ultra HD
Located in Chiba prefecture on the Boso peninsula by Tokyo bay and roughly facing Yokohama, Mount Nokogiri, or in Japanese Nokogiriyama, is a 330m tall mountain featuring the Nihon-ji Temple (Nihonji). Established over 1,300 years ago, Nihon-Ji Temple is actually one of Kanto area’ oldest temples and features many important Japanese cultural artifacts, including the 30m tall carving of Hyaku-Shaku Kanon, depicting the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy (1966), 1,500 statues of Buddhist disciples (rakan) and finally, the crown jewel of Nihon-Ji, the 31m tall Daibutsu (Big Buddha) carved in 1780 from the mountain itself.

This awesome shrine is located not so far from the hustle and bustle of Shibuya Scramble Crossing. The shrine is surrounded by urban buildings yet it still feels quite zen and peaceful. The shrine is protected by two dogs (Koma-inu) but they seem to resemble wolves more than anything. Usually shrines in Japan are protected by foxes but this one is an exception.

Located in the heart of Shizuoka’s peaceful and beautiful countryside and an hour away by car from Hamamatsu, Okuni Shrine is one of the four major Shinto Shrines in the Shizuoka prefecture. According to past official documents, Okuni Shrine was established on February 18, 555 and enshrines the deity known as O-na-muchi No Mikoto, also known as Okunimushi No Mikoto (The Great Land Master).
Since then the Temple received the Imperial offerings and its special envoy every year and many centuries later on June 13, 1874 the Meiji government gave Okuni Shrine the rank of Kokuhei-Shosha class of Nationally significant shrines.

Japan New Year 1st visit to Shinto shrine called Hatsumoude 2019
Japan New Year 1st visit to Shinto shrine called Hatsumoude 2019.
Hatsumōde (初詣 hatsumōde) is the first Shinto shrine visit of the Japanese New Year. Some people visit a Buddhist temple instead. Many visit on the first, second, or third day of the year as most are off work on those days. Generally, wishes for the new year are made, new omamori (charms or amulets) are bought, and the old ones are returned to the shrine so they can be burned. There are often long lines at major shrines throughout Japan.

Arai-Yu Sento - Tokyo - 荒井湯 - 4K Ultra HD
While the difference may be subtle for us foreigners, sento and onsen are two different ways to enjoy Japanese bath culture. Simply put onsen means hot spring with hot natural water, while a sento is a paid public bath with heating boilers and dates back to as early as the Heian Period. In earlier days, it was the norm that ordinary people didn’t own baths at their home.
Today’s sento was introduced to us by a friend, Stephanie, who happens to be one of Tokyo’s most famous sento ambassadors. Located near Tokyo Skytree in Sumida-Ku, Arai-Yu is an old sento constructed in a traditional architectural style called “miyadzukuri.” The same architectural style used for Japanese shrines and temples.
While each sento is unique, Arai-Yu has its own it “golden age” of sento thanks to its design, atmosphere and as well as its amazing mural designed by one of Tokyo’s most famous sento painter : Nakajima-San
Please remember that it is prohibited to take photos or video in a Sento/Onsen without the owner’s approval.
For more information on Sento please visit and special thanks to Steph that was kind enough to coordinate this shoot for us!

Kawaguchiko Maple Corridor - Yamanashi - もみじ回廊 - 4K Ultra HD
Kawaguchiko Maple Corridor, or in Japanese the Momiji-Kairo is a very small garden with two dozen maple trees that are conveniently located just in front Mt. Fuji and by the shores of Lake Kawaguchiko. With a lot of patience and if you are ready to be there at around 6 or 7am, you can then take some of the beautiful pictures of your trip to Japan. After 8am, the Maple Corridor will literally look like Shibuya crossing during the week-end, so be warned, it’s a lovely place but extremely crowded all day long!!!!!
