The Domes: Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory
The Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory is also known as the Mitchell Park Domes, or simply The Domes. The Domes are located south of the Menomonee Valley, on Layton Boulevard, near downtown Milwaukee. Built over the course of several years in the mid-1960s, The Domes are a Milwaukee institution.
There are three domes: a Jungle Dome, Desert Dome and Show Dome, where displays rotate by season. All three domes contain plants & flowers from around the world. My favorite flowers were the Silver Vase Plant (Brazil), Blue Ginger (also Brazil), Golden Shrimp Plant (Peru) and Desert Rose (Africa). Major #flowerporn!

In the Arid Dome guests can visit the deserts of Africa, Madagascar, and South America. The Tropical Dome provides jungle-like trails with a diversity of rich plants and flowers from the rain forests. The Floral Show Dome contains five beautiful seasonal displays throughout the year.
The Mitchell Park Conservatory recently completed a major renovation and now provides state-of-the-art lighting and entertainment stage. The Domes is a perfect site for weddings, ceremonies, receptions and corporate events.

Reimagine The Domes and State Fair
Wisconsin families have been loving the Mitchell Park Domes and the state fair grounds for over a hundred years. These destinations allow families to see and touch worlds they don’t normally experience. Banana trees and cactus and palm trees. Cows and chickens and rides. These two venues are treasures. At StageW we believe it is time to honor their history by reimagining their future.
What if we could transform the Milwaukee Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory - also known as The Domes - into a world-class vertical farming research and development center and jobs training facility.
What if we could transform the livestock infrastructure at the Wisconsin State Fair into a world-class fluid milk R&D center with micro dairy operations, micro milk processing operations, and jobs training facility.
These state-of-the-art centers can be one-of-kind laboratories providing world leadership in development of sustainable technologies and applications needed to support food production throughout the world. They can also help families transition from poverty by providing certified training programs in food production and processing that will empower economic development throughout the state. Both centers can attract scientists from throughout the world; sparking entrepreneurial investment throughout the state and; generating revenue as year-around tourist destinations.
Hank Aaron State Trail - via Mitchell Park Domes
The Hank Aaron State Trailhead via eastbound branches off and starts from a small section of the Oak Leaf Trail at Hwy 18 (Blue Mound Road) and underwood Pkwy (approximately 124th Street) in Wauwatosa, Wi.
The State trail primarily goes in an eastbound direction and starts to branch off and go in two different directions upon reaching the bridge over the Menomonee River to Canal Street, turning left following the trail going the Canal Street Route to the Harley-Davidson museum at 6th Street, or like in this video going straight and bicycling to The Mitchell Domes in Mitchell Park.
The video will also narrate different points of interest along the route, as well as some restaurants and places that are of interest to the average cyclist.
Mitchell Park Domes closed until further notice
The Milwaukee County Executive tells us that for at least the next two weeks, the Domes will be closed as they re-inspect everything.

The Domes and Student Fees
Welcome back to this week’s fastest minute in construction. I’m Nate Beck, Daily Reporter staff writer.
Let’s dig into the news.
A Milwaukee County task force this week signed off on a $66 million plan that would overhaul the crumbling Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory, and it’s iconic domes.
The plan would use public and private money to add a host of new features to the park, including a research facility, a farm-to-table restaurant and other amenities.
The plan comes after months of concern over how to fix the domes, which suffer from significant deterioration. Although the plan would save the county money, a consultant that compiled it notes coming up with the money will be challenging.
Milwaukee county is staring down a backlog of infrastructure projects that could approach $400 million in the next four years. It’s parks and cultural facilities are particularly neglected.
An endorsement of the domes plan by the task force sends the plan to a committee of the county board for further review.
-------------------------------------
A recently introduced bill would restrict how state universities can use student fees for construction projects.
The bipartisan bill directs universities to use the fees -- which students pay on top of tuition -- for things like student media and campus organizations. The fees can’t pay for more than 50 percent of a project, and must be approved by a majority of students in a campus-wide vote for two consecutive academic years.
Universities have used student fees to pay for a variety of projects, including a new student center at the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire in 2012, and a new recreation center at UW Madison that’s underway.
University officials say the new bill could limit their ability to pay for new projects that enhance the campus experience, and oppose the measure.
That’s it for this week’s punch list, we’ll see you next week.
