Starting from the town of Monticello near the Colorado border, we travel deep into the woods of Manti-La Sal National Forest to then descend to the popular town of Moab. From there we ride our bikes on one of the most challenging and breathtaking places during our trip, the amazing red rock desert mountains near Canyonlands National Park. In this 13th episode of our 2017 trip across the United States on the Trans America Trail (aka: TAT), we travel from Moab, a very popular town for off-road vehicles and mountain bikers, as well as the central point to Canyonlands and Arches National Parks. From here we move deep into the San Rafael Desert, a very desolated yet breathtaking area to then stay the night at a very magical place call Temple Mountain, with its pictographs believed to date as far back as 8,000 years ago. The next day we journey deeper into the canyons until we reached the town of Castle Dale where once again we stumble upon a delicious burger joint . Just another amazing section of the TAT. Desert Drone Aerial Tour Around Moab Utah
If I could be any animal, I would be the fastest member of the animal kingdom, the Peregrine Falcon. But I'm just a human so the next best thing was to buy a DJI Mavic Air. Mostly to get my FAA commercial drone pilot license and use it for work, but in the meantime, the pup and I took it to the Utah desert where he tried attacking it mid-flight (both dog and drone were fine), it flew through two arches, in a slot canyon (drones don't like slot canyons), over the Colorado River, and driving cliffside in the San Rafael Swell. Enjoy the tour!
The beginning tailgate coffee sequence wasn't shot with a drone, but pre-flight fuel is 100% necessary!

Camp LIA: Summer Adventure in Moab
Sixteen urban Latino high school students from Utah kicked off their summer vacation with an unforgettable Take It Outside! weekend adventure on the Colorado River near Moab.
The students slept out under the stars, braved high water runoff, and crushed Class I-II rapids on an overnight river raft trip provided by BLM-Utah, in partnership with Latinos In Action (LIA) and O.A.R.S. Canyonlands, Inc.
Mentors from LIA, the BLM, U.S. Forest Service, and Friends of Arches and Canyonlands Parks shared their insights about education paths and careers in natural resources. The O.A.R.S. river guides demonstrated the value of respecting the environment, looking out for each other, and how to take care of themselves outdoors. Five students from Logan High School were honored with internships to participate as peer leaders.
The students—many of whom had never been camping before-- became fast friends as they shared an action-packed, multi-day outdoor experience. The participants camped and hiked on public lands managed by the BLM-Utah's Moab Field Office; exploring red rock canyons, discovering desert wildlife, and even studying dinosaur tracks.
The learning and fun will continue throughout the summer with Camp LIA day trips to recreation areas in northern Utah, thanks to a partnership with outdoor leadership school Splore. Recreational opportunities include paddle boarding and rock climbing.
All this comes about from cooperation among a team of incredible partners: Latinos In Action; O.A.R.S. Canyonlands, Inc.; Friends of Arches and Canyonlands Parks; National Park Service, Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance Program; The Outdoor Foundation; Utah State University; US Forest Service Uintah-Wasatch-Cache; Bureau of Reclamation Upper Colorado Region, and Splore.

After seeing a large bright blue body of water in the middle of the Moab, Utah desert while flying, I decided to go on a road trip from California to Utah to check it out. This is my journey of finding the giant pool/pond and learning what it is. I also go on a hike to Corona arch in Moab, Utah. The place where people used to rope swing off of.

Moab Adventures 2012
Over President's Weekend in Feb 2012 I headed to Moab with a few friends for some running, canyoneering, and other random adventures. We did the Rock of Ages route, ran the Moab Red Hot 55k, rappelled off Morning Glory Arch, ran the Amasa Back and Jackson's trails, and capped off the trip with a scramble/rappel through Bighorn canyon in Arches NP. Always a fun time in Moab, the video is about a 6.5min documentary of the routes and the trip.

Ep. 130: Canyonlands - The Maze | Utah off-road 4x4 travel camping hiking
Unlike most National Parks, the Maze District of Canyonlands in Utah has no paved roads. You won't see any tour buses filled with visitors here. In fact, it has few roads at all -- it's mostly traversed by 4x4 trails. Cut off from the rest of the world by the Colorado and Green Rivers, it's one of the most remote places in the Lower 48.
For most visitors, Canyonlands National Park means the Island in the Sky district, from which the remote Maze district is separated by the canyons of the Green River. It takes hours to drive between the two, including the final 46 miles on dirt road just to reach the Hans Flat Ranger Station. Even then, you're still not yet in the Park as you first have to traverse the Orange Cliffs Unit of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area to enter the Park itself.
The Maze is the most remote and least visited unit of Canyonlands, and requires a greater degree of self-sufficiency. Rarely do visitors spend less than three days in the Maze, and the area can easily absorb a week-long trip. We'd only see one ranger jeep, and one group of four mountain bikers in our four full days in The Maze. It's a place to bring lots of water, extra gas, and even spare parts for your vehicle.
We first visited The Maze in 2014 on a five-day 4x4 camping expedition with friends Marc and Karen, which we'll share with you in this episode of Grand Adventure.

This is a big Wahoo on this bike pathway trail going north out of Moab along Highway 191 through Moab Canyon. It runs past the entrance to Arches National Park to the turn-off of 191 to Canyonlands and Dead Horse Point. We provide some advice on NOT biking through Arches. Great ride on this paved bike pathway. There are some uphill portions. No problem with an eBIke!
Moab, Utah is a Bikers' Playground
All kinds of outdoor adventurers visit Moab, but it’s perhaps best known for its biking opportunities — of both the mountain and motorized variety. There are more than 10 different areas to ride, each with miles of trails that run the difficulty gamut from beginner to expert. (Note: No biking is allowed in the national parks.)
Matador Ambassadors Yancy and Wyatt Caldwell recently scoped out the Moab biking scene and produced the video above. Their conclusion? There is WAY more terrain than can be explored on just one trip. As with any visit to Utah, you’re just scratching the surface.
