The Moffat Tunnel East Portal and Ventilation Exhaust System
The Moffat Tunnel was completed in 1928 and connected the Denver area to Utah and the Western United States by tunneling under the Continental Divide. The tunnel is still in use today and the ventilation system has been modified extensively over the years as may be seen in this video. Shown here are many different views that normally aren't available to the regular visitor to the East Portal. Interestingly, the portal is nowhere near the tunnel's entrance into the mountain. There were no trains running the day of the video because of track maintenance. Rail traffic was re-routed through Cheyenne, WY for several weeks.

A Moffat Tunnel Visit! Colorado, 9/22/16
While on vacation back in September of 2016. On 9/22/16 My Father & I stopped by to take in the views of Moffat Tunnel, Located roughly 70 miles northwest of Denver Colorado.

FINALLY! AMTK 152 at Moffat Tunnel (22AUG2016)
Amtrak 152, AMTK 47 (Train 6 - California Zephyr® - San Francisco to Chicago) passing over the Fraser River and entering the Moffat Tunnel at Winter Park, Colorado. The 6.2 mile Moffat Tunnel was opened in 1928 replacing the Rollins Pass as the preferred route between Denver, Colorado and Salt Lake City, Utah.
I paid the price for this shot: I waited in the freezing cold pouring rain for a very long time until I was literally soaked to the bone before the rain stopped and the Zephyr finally passed through running hours late.

East Bound Coal Train at Moffat Tunnel
A loaded coal train on the Moffat Tunnel Subdivision passes by and enters the west portal of the Moffat Tunnel in Winter Park, Colorado.
This train had 6 locomotives: 2 in the lead, 3 mid train DPUs, and 1 end DPU.
In the front:
UP 5995: GE C44ACCTE (AC4400CW-CTE)
UP 5583: GE C44ACCTE (AC4400CW-CTE)
I did not catch the DPU's on camera, so they're not listed.
The friendly engineer gave me a mini horn show.

Winter Park Resort is an alpine ski resort in Winter Park, Colorado in the Rocky Mountains. Located just off U.S. Highway 40, the resort is about an hour and a half's drive from Denver, Colorado.
The mountain opened for the 1939--1940 season as Winter Park Ski Area[1] and was owned and operated by the city and county of Denver until 2002, when Denver entered into a partnership with Intrawest ULC, a Canadian corporation headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia, which has operated the resort since then.[2] For nearly 70 years a popular way for Denver residents to get there was via the Ski Train, which arrived at the resort's base area though the Moffat Tunnel. (The Ski Train was terminated by the railroad in spring 2009.) Winter Park Resort is home to one of the world's largest and oldest disabled skiing programs, the National Sports Center for the Disabled.
The resort consists of three interconnected mountain peaks — Winter Park, Mary Jane, and Vasquez Ridge — which share a common lift ticket. Mary Jane, opened in 1975, has a separate base area and is known for its moguls, tree skiing, hidden huts and generally more difficult terrain. It encompasses the above-tree line terrain of Parsenn Bowl. Vasquez Ridge, opened in 1986, offers intermediate terrain and mogul runs. In 1997, 435 acres (176 ha) of backcountry terrain in Vasquez Cirque were opened to skiing, although access required hiking from the top of Mary Jane;[3] the 2006 relocation of the former Outrigger triple chairlift to the Cirque provides lift access to much of that terrain.
Since taking over operation of the resort, Intrawest has made several changes to the mountain's infrastructure, renovating the food services in the West Portal base lodge, opening new lifts in 2005 and 2006, and publicly announcing plans for a new base village to include hundreds of new condominia, a parking structure, a Village Pond, and a family swim center, all accessible via a new open-air gondola to be known as The Village Cabriolet.[4] However, while this change has been great for the economic development of the town and the resort, it has also been a threat to the existing historic resort base. The historic Balcony House remains under constant threat of demolition. This historic building was designed in the Googie style of architecture, which was a popular style in the 1940s to the 1960s. This building is a standing memory to the original history of Winter Park.
In an attempt to make Winter Park into a year-round resort, Intrawest operates the lifts during the summer months for mountain biking. The Arrow chairlift also services an alpine slide in the summer, and the base area features miniature golf, a climbing wall, and other diversions. While the Winter Park area is also a popular destination for golf, there are no golf courses located at, or operated by, the resort itself.

2000+01 Cascade Tunnel East Portal
In May of 2000 and May 2001 I recorded the tunnel door operation on the east portal of the Cascade Tunnel in North Central Washington State. The first video has a westbound entering the tunnel and within 5 minutes a strobe light flashes and buzzer sounds, the newer metal partitioned door closes and the turbines wind up to evacuate the tunnel of the engines exhaust.
The second video was shot the next year, same scenario, however this time I did not get the door closing as the battery died on the camera. After a quick charge, I managed to get the other roll-up door opening and the turbines shutting down.
Be sure to add &fmt=18 to the end of the address to watch in high quality as the compression kills the older NTSC 8mm video quality!
Moffat Sub. Missouri Pacific Heritage Unit and Work Trains, August 9, 2017
On August 8th we heard that the Missouri Pacific Heritage Unit was in Denver and was going to possibly head west, on the Phippsberg Local, we also heard that there was going to be plenty of traffic. After staying the night near the tracks, we got up early to find a Work train moving from Crater to Bond to switch out more tie gondolas before heading back up to drop more ties. After that, we heard of a westbound train whose crew was going to run out of hours and were going into the siding at Radium, this was the train with the Mopac Heritage Unit. As an interesting side note, this train should have been a coal train, yet it had a short string of covered hoppers on the back. Next, We caught Amtrak 5 west of Bond on the Glenwood Springs Subdivision. Next the CJCSV Westbound Coal Train Stopped at Bond for a Crew Change. After that, we saw Amtrak 6 at Yarmony, and decided we should start heading home, but not after watching a Work Train a Kremmling. The work train was moving empty concrete tie flats from Kremmling to Troublesome. The Moffat was gearing up for a large maintenance project which included replacing ties and ballast from Denver to Rollins, Replacing Concrete ties from Kremmling to Bond, and replacing wooden ties from Bond to Phippsberg. New concrete ties were being staged at Troublesome and Kremmling. Check out our video from yesterday if you have not already:
