There is a lot of history with this mountain house which I had never heard of before. This house reminds me of the shinning mountain house which is a more popular mountain house due to the movie.
6 presidents and many celebrates have stayed at the mountain house over the years.
This is one place that I would love to be able to stay during the summer months to get to experience the lake and all the outdoor activities.
Undercliff & Overcliff Hike at Mohonk Preserve, New Paltz, Hudson Valley, VISIT vortex
Follow this pleasant loop trail skirting the base of the rock climbing cliffs for spectacular views of climbers and the valley below. Heading east, follow the right fork in the carriage road, which will put you on the Undercliff Road. This road follows the base of the very popular rock climbing area of the Shawangunks. Continue over the level carriage road for two-and-a-quarter miles to Rhododendron Bridge (a junction of numerous paths). At Rhododendron Bridge, make a left onto the Overcliff Road for the two-and-a-quarter mile return to Trapps Bridge.
From New Paltz head west out of town on 299 for 5.8 miles to the end. Turn right onto Route 44/55. Continue straight, pass the Preserve Visitor Center and the road makes a very sharp hairpin turn and climbs to the Trapps Bridge (steel overpass). Continue for 0.3 mile past Trapps Bridge and turn right into the West Trapps Trailhead parking.

Driving to Gardiner, New York from Midtown Manhattan
Friday, June 29th, 2018 - Drove from Midtown Manhattan to Gardiner, New York on the weekend before July 4th. Traffic out of Manhattan via the west side highway and the Lincoln tunnel was less than optimal(at a stand still). Ended up taking 10th north, through the upper west side, past Harlem, upper Manhattan and Washington Heights to the George Washington Bridge. Took 45 minutes to leave NYC. After crossing the GW Bridge, connected up with I95 to I80 before turning onto route 17 near Hackensack. Drove on route 17 until it merged into I87 north. Exited I87 around the New York Stewart airport before taking local routes 23 and 21 to our destination. Return trip was the following day and took a similar route back except for taking the Garden State Parkway back towards NYC. Good weather, uneventful drive except for the heavy traffic leaving NYC.

Much of what we use here is pretty old fashioned, very simple, we don't shun technology in terms of computer science and database work and all of that. That's the wave of the future.

My role here is very much in traditional observation of not changing our methodology mid-stream. So, my role of over lapping with Dan for about 15 years is I know how he did things, his philosophy, where he went to collect his data, how he collected it.

15. SOUNDBITE: (English) Benjamin Cook, Research Scientist:
What's really special about Mohonk is that they have never switched over, so they've had the resources and people there to be able to go physically and look at the thermometer every single day. And have not had to rely on automated systems that can break down, can have significant biases in them, of you lose power then you are no longer recording.

17. SOUNDBITE: (English): Benjamin Cook, Research Scientist:
There's other records that are just as long from either Albany or New York City and from many many other different areas, but none have the same consistency of methodology and oversight over the entire time period that allows us to use the Mohonk record with very little correction for possible errors.

19. SOUNDBITE: (English): Paul Huth, Director of Research, Mohonk Nature Preserve:
Nature never stops. Even in the winter time there are conditions and information that we want to record, and so we as observers and being aware of the legacy and the observations of the key areas that Dan observed, we're obligated to follow the nature and observe and record.

LEAD IN:
Automated machines seem to be taking over manual labour across every sector.
But one weather observatory in the U.S. is proudly still recording the weather by hand.
The practice has been unchanged for more than three generations.
STORYLINE:
The weather may be small talk to some, but if you ask Paul Huth it's likely to bring on a long response peppered with details about barometers, wind speeds and atmospheric conditions.
Huth has made weather observation the focus of his career as a biologist at the Mohonk Preserve in Hudson Valley, New York state.
The weather has been the subject of his work since the mid 1970s.
Alongside compiling data on the flora and fauna from the on site private nature reserve, Huth carries out the important task of collecting weather data each day.
