On the Road in Southern Vermont: Overview | Connecting Point | Nov. 2, 2016
Travel along the Molly Stark Byway, the corridor that runs along Route 9 from Bennington, VT to Brattleboro, VT. This area is beloved by those who love outdoor recreation, and is a popular spot for “leaf-peeping” during the fall.
There is, however, a lot more to this region than maple syrup and fall foliage. A region with great history, southern Vermont has hosted revolutionary war battles, enjoyed economic boom times during the industrial revolution, and is now looking for its place in the 21st century.
Connecting Point executive producer Tony Dunne and videographer Mark Langevin bring us an overview of the people and issues that drive the rural communities and urban centers which make up this picturesque region, to find out what life is like in this part of the Green Mountain state.

Bennington Battle Monument | Connecting Point | Nov. 11, 2015
On August 17, 1777, Brigadier General John Stark and his men defeated General Burgoyne's British army in what became known as the Battle of Bennington, a key turning point in the American Revolutionary War. While the battle took place in New York State, just over the border in Bennington, VT, a monument was erected in 1889 to commemorate this often overlooked battle at the birth of our nation.

Woodford State Park - The Visitor's Guide to Southern Vermont
Today on The Visitor's Guide to Southern Vermont, we visit Woodford State Park. At 2400 feet, this 398-acre park has the highest elevation campground of any park in Vermont. Woodford is located on a mountain plateau surrounding Adams Reservoir. The high elevation spruce/fir/birch forest provides an ideal setting for the park. Woodford borders the George Aiken Wilderness Area, which is in the Green Mountain National Forest. There are several lakes and ponds in the surrounding area.
In addition to 4 cabins, the campground has 103 sites including 20 lean-to. The heavily wooded area surrounds the reservoir and offers great camping opportunities. Flush toilets, coin-operated hot showers, and a dump station are provided. There is a small beach and picnic area near the dam with pit toilet facilities. Rowboats, canoes, and kayaks are available for rent. There are several hiking trails, including a 2.7 mile trail around the lake.

This drive in the southwestern corner of Vermont is not a loop; you will need to double back to return to the start or step off the route where ever you choose. This drive also dips into northwestern Massachusetts to visit the delightful town of Williamstown. The Vermont towns of Manchester and Bennington are cherished for their classic New England beauty structures, and for their fine museums, dining and shopping. Take all or a part of the drive, which includes a very outdoorsy side trip to the pristine Somerset Reservoir. This drive has lots of digressions for dining and wining.
This loop drives starts and ends at the bustling, hippie-period-redux town of Brattleboro, with lots of good dining, fun shops, and a circus school, and travels on and around Route 9, also called the Molly Stark Byway. The drive passes through the Mount Snow ski area, which offers scenic chair life rides on the Bluebird Express daily during foliage season. You will pass through delightful towns like Newfane and Whitingham, and the views all along the way are guaranteed to be spectacular if the weather cooperates.
Lakes Bomoseen and St. Catherine Loop -- 55 miles
This drive is actually two intersecting loops, forming a figure eight, so you can shorten or lengthen the entire drive as you see fit. The loops travel around Lake Bomoseen, Birdseye Mountain, and Lake St. Catherine. A neat side trip takes you to Proctor, where you can learn about and marvel at the state’s historic marble quarrying industry. Also, tour a real castle!
Upper Connecticut River Valley Loop -- 115 miles
This loop is a large north-south oval in east-central Vermont, starting and ending in the beautiful town of Woodstock and passing through the Killington ski area. A small side trip takes you to the dramatic Quechee Gorge, also known as Vermont’s Little Grand Canyon, with fun souvenir shopping right nearby. You can shorten the drive easily by doing only pieces of the loop.
Stowe and Northern Mountains Loop -- 60 miles
This drive starts and ends at Stowe and its world-famous ski mountain, where, in the fall, you can take a gondola sky ride and see the fall foliage from above as you warm up the seat for wintertime skiers coming up next. Also near Stowe are two waterfalls, where adventurous people may hike or take photos or have a picnic. The drive also passes one of the state's parks, with a beautiful mountain lake. Prepare for classic images of Vermont’s Green Mountains. Also, a quick, 6-mile side-trip down Route 100, directly south of Stowe like a tail on this drive loop, is Waterbury Center, a sweet place, partly because of the presence of Cold Hollow Cider Mill.

DUNBARTON NH - Dunbarton Celebrates General John Stark Day on the Commons. The life-like bronze statue of Caleb Stark on the Town Common commemorates the son of John and Molly Stark, who joined his father at the Battle of Bunker Hill in Charlestown, Massachusetts.
New Hampshire's Most Famous Revolutionary War Hero
Born on August 28, 1728, Stark was the second son of Scottish immigrant parents in Londonderry, New Hampshire, but lived from the age of eight in Manchester (then called Derryfield). In 1752 he was captured by the Abenaki when hunting and trapping along the Pemigewasset River. He was taken to Canada where he remained captive until a ransom was paid.
General Stark was first commissioned as a second Lieutenant in Rogers' Rangers at the outbreak of the French and Indian Wars, and gained valuable experience that later led to his leadership in the Revolutionary War.
Between the French and Indian Wars and the Revolutionary War, General Stark spent a considerable amount of time at the Page homestead in Dunbarton, and married Elizabeth Molly Page on August 20, 1758.
General Stark became colonel in the New Hampshire Militia four days after the Battles of Lexington and stark Concord, and was given command of the First New Hampshire Regiment. He was instrumental in leading the fight at the Battle of Bunker Hill in 1775 and the Battle of Bennington in 1777.
Stark was Major General in command of the Northern Department of the Continental Army during the latter years of the war. His participation ended for a while after Bennington and Saratoga, but he was called back to take command of the whole Northern Department.
In 1783, Stark was ordered to headquarters by George Washington, and given the personal thanks of the Commander-in-Chief, as well as the rank of Major General by brevet.
After the war, Stark retired to his home in Derryfield. He and Molly had 10 children, 5 boys and 5 girls, one of whom died in infancy. He died on May 8, 1822 at the age of 93 and was buried in Manchester; it was said that he was the last surviving Continental general of the Revolution.

Biking the Length of Vermont in 9 Minutes
On August 19, 2000 I biked the length of Vermont (198 miles) from Canada to Massachusetts on Route 5. I had a cheap, Russian-made (redundant) 8 mm movie camera and a custom -made intervalometer that exposed one frame of film every 20 seconds. The result is a time-lapse version of VT that condenses a 14 hour ride in to less than 10 minutes. Brother Brad was in the pace car with another video camera and his pieces are interspersed with the time-lapse.

Former principal pleads guilty to diverting funds
BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) -- A former elementary school principal in Vermont has pleaded guilty to diverting $4,000 in grant money to his personal use.
Michael Heller of Fairfax was principal of Readsboro Elementary School for two years. The Bennington Banner reports the 41-year-old Heller agreed to accept an 18-month deferred sentence as part of a plea agreement. He has to complete 100 hours of community service and pay the school back.
Police said they were contacted by interim superintendent Richard McClements in December about an unauthorized Principal's Account. Heller was asked to provide invoices, and later admitted to misusing the funds.
His attorney said Tuesday that Heller made a mistake and was in desperate financial circumstances at the time.
