The science behind the sea ice, a wide screen introductory movie and some of the small animals living below the ice, are introduced in the Okhotsk Ryuhyo Museum (オホーツク流氷館) on Mount Tento in Abashiri. Interesting displays and the tiny kurione (sea angel), a funky relative of the sea slug that has become the de facto Abashiri's mascot.

A trip to Mombetsu in Hokkaido – Hairy crab and cherry salmon in Mombetsu on the Sea of Okhotsk!
The sea is covered with ice in winter, with “Umi-ake” (the start of fishing season) arriving in May at the Sea of Okhotsk. Fishermen bring in large hauls of hairy crab that feed on rich nutrients during the winter months. Come and taste fresh hairy crab for yourself!
