Η Μονή του Μεγάλου Μετεώρου είναι μία από τις παλαιότερες και η μεγαλύτερη από τις υπάρχουσες σήμερα μετεωρίτικες μονές. Η μονή ιδρύθηκε λίγο πριν από τα μέσα του 14ου αι., από τον Όσιο Αθανάσιο τον Μετεωρίτη, πάνω στο βράχο που ονομαζόταν Πλατύς Λίθος και που ο ίδιος ονόμασε Μετέωρο. Εκεί έκτισε το ασκητικό του καταφύγιο, οργάνωσε την πρώτη συστηματική μοναστική κοινότητα με αυστηρή τυπική μορφή κοινοβίου και οικοδόμησε ναό αφιερωμένο, όπως και η μονή στην Παναγία (Παναγία της Μετεωρίτισσας Πέτρας). Αργότερα όταν η μοναχική κοινότητα αυξήθηκε ο Αθανάσιος έκτισε νέο καθολικό.
Δεύτερος κτήτορας της μονής και συνεχιστής του έργου του Αθανασίου υπήρξε ο μαθητής του και πρώην Σέρβος ηγεμόνας Ιωάννης Ούρεσης Άγγελος Κομνηνός Δούκας ο Παλαιολόγος, ο μετέπειτα μοναχός Όσιος Ιωάσαφ, που το 1387/88 οικοδόμησε, στη θέση του ναού που έχτισε ο Αθανάσιος, νέο ναό που αποτέλεσε το καθολικό της μονής. Στα μέσα του 16ου αι. η μονή γνώρισε ιδιαίτερη άνθιση. Ο οικουμενικός πατριάρχης Ιερεμίας Α΄ (1522-1546) κατοχύρωσε με σιγίλλιο τα προνόμια και την πλήρη ανεξαρτησία της μονής κατά το πρότυπο των μονών του Αγίου Όρους.
Στα 1544/5 ανεγέρθηκε νέος ναός με λιτή, αφιερωμένος στη Μεταμόρφωση του Σωτήρος. Στο νέο ναό ενσωματώθηκε ως Ιερό Βήμα το παλαιό καθολικό. Η τοιχογράφηση του κυρίως ναού έγινε στα 1552 με πρωτοβουλία του ηγουμένου Συμεών, ο οποίος στα 1557 έκτισε και την τράπεζα της μονής. Για τις δραστηριότητές του αυτές ο ηγούμενος Συμεών θεωρείται ως ο τρίτος κτήτορας. Κατά τη δεύτερη δεκαετία του 16ου αι. κατασκευάστηκε ο πύργος και η αρχική κλίμακα ανόδου, μια ξύλινη ανεμόσκαλα προσαρμοσμένη στο βράχο. Το 1572 ανεγέρθηκε το γηροκομείο, το 1789 το παρεκκλήσι των Αγίων Κωνσταντίνου και Ελένης και το 1791 κατασκευάστηκε το ξυλόγλυπτο τέμπλο του καθολικού. Στα 1806 κατασκευάστηκε νέα σειρά κελλιών, τα οποία σήμερα έχουν ανακατασκευαστεί.
Στα 1809 ο ηγούμενος της μονής Παρθένιος Ορφίδης φυλακίζεται στα Ιωάννινα από τον Αλή Πασά, προφανώς γιατί η μονή του Μεγάλου Μετεώρου, όπως και οι υπόλοιπες των Μετεώρων είχε υποθάλψει το κίνημα του ιερέα Θύμιου Βλαχάβα. Έκτοτε οι μονές των Μετεώρων γνώρισαν την εκδικητική μανία του Πασά των Ιωαννίνων και των τηλεβόλων των Τουρκαλβανών. Η μονή κατάφερε να επιβιώσει μέσα από περιπέτειες, επιδρομές, λεηλασίες, πυρκαγιές και φυσικές καταστροφές μέχρι τις μέρες μας.
Ο επισκέπτης προσεγγίζει σήμερα τη μονή από μια κατηφορική και στη συνέχεια από μια κλίμακα ανόδου. Εισερχόμενος κανείς στο εσωτερικό συναντά δεξιά τον πύργο του βριζονίου, που στέγαζε το μηχανισμό για το δίχτυ, το οποίο παλαιότερα χρησιμοποιούσαν οι μοναχοί για την πρόσβασή τους στη μονή, καθώς και το βαγεναρείο, δηλαδή το κελάρι της μονής, που σήμερα έχει διαμορφωθεί σε μουσείο αντικειμένων καθημερινής ζωής. Προχωρώντας ψηλότερα, αριστερά συναντάμε την εστία, την τράπεζα και ανατολικά της το νοσοκομείο και γηροκομείο το οποίο κτίστηκε το 1572. Δεξιά βρίσκονται το καθολικό και τα παρεκκλήσια. Το καθολικό απαρτίζεται από τρία μέρη. Το αρχαιότερο καθολικό που ιδρύθηκε από τον Όσιο Αθανάσιο, επανακτίστηκε στα 1387/8 από τον Όσιο Ιωάσαφ και ενσωματώθηκε ως Ιερό Βήμα στον μεταγενέστερο καθολικό, που ανεγέρθηκε στα 1544/5 ακολουθώντας τον αθωνίτικο τύπο (τετρακιόνιος σταυροειδής εγγεγραμμένος με κόγχες, τους λεγόμενους χορούς, και λιτή στη δυτική του πλευρά). Ο ζωγραφικός διάκοσμος της μονής έγινε σε τρείς φάσεις. Από την πρώτη φάση, του 14ου αι., διατηρείται μόνο η σκηνή της Δευτέρας Παρουσίας στην εξωτερική πλευρά του βόρειου τοίχου του παλαιού καθολικού. Στη δεύτερη φάση, το 1483, αγιογραφήθηκε το παλαιό καθολικό, δηλαδή το σημερινό ιερό βήμα με εξαίρεση ορισμένες παραστάσεις, οι οποίες ανάγονται στην τρίτη ζωγραφική φάση, αυτής του 1552 που έγιναν και οι τοιχογραφίες του νέου καθολικού και της λιτής. Οι καλλιτέχνες του ζωγραφικού διακόσμου είναι ανώνυμοι, ωστόσο το τεχνοτροπικό ιδίωμα των καλλιτεχνών του νέου καθολικού και της λιτής προδίδει τη στενή σχέση τους με την Κρητική Σχολή και δή τον Θεοφάνη, μαθητής του οποίου υπήρξε πιθανότατα, ο επίσης κρητικός ζωγράφος Τζώρτζης που κατά την επικρατέστερη άποψη είναι ο δημιουργός τους.
Στην νότια πλευρά του ιερού βήματος είναι προσκολλημένο το παρεκκλήσσιο του Τιμίου Προδρόμου, ένας μικρός θολωτός χώρος, ο οποίος κατά καιρούς δέχτηκε διάφορες δομικές επεμβάσεις. Οι αγιογραφίες του χρονολογούνται στα 1682.
Σε μικρή απόσταση νοτιοδυτικά του καθολικού είναι κτισμένο το παρεκκλήσιο των Αγίων Κωνσταντίνου και Ελένης, ένας μονόχωρος, τρουλαίος, ναός που χτίστηκε το 1789.

The Holy Monastery of Saint Nicholas of Anapafsas is the first Monastery that we encounter on our way to the Holy Meteora and was founded at the end of the 14th century. St. Stephen's Monastery, Meteora, ☎ +30 24320 22279, [6]. 09:00 - 13:30 and 15:30 - 17:30. This is the most accessible monastery, where instead of steps you simply cross a small bridge to reach the entrance. It is ideal for visitors who cannot use the steps and yet they wish to have a real experience of a Meteora monastery. Entrance: 3€. edit
Inexpensive, mass produced icons may be purchased in the monasteries for as little as €1. They do not have the variety of the factories, however.
The monasteries were not originally built for tourism. Tourism, essential to the monasteries survival, has also destroyed their character. They are no longer contemplative.

It is a must-visit place, which provides the visitor with the opportunity to admire rear or even extinct birds and colorful mushrooms. Next to the cafe is the shop of the Museum, where the visitor can buy souvenirs and delicious mushroom products. edit

The Monastery of Varlaam - Meteora - Kalambaka, Greece
The Monastery of Varlaam is one of six active monasteries of Meteora that are on top of spectacular pinnacles in Kalambaka, Greece. The monastery is named after an ascetic named Varlaam who climbed the rock. He built churches upon the rock and after his death it was abandoned for about 200 years. In the early 1500’s two brothers, Theophanes and Nektarios Apsarades, built the tower and the central church of the monastery. The presence of monks was constant up to the 16th century. Since the early part of the 17th century only a few monks remained. It was not until the early part of the 19th century that steps were cared in the rock with a bridge between them. Before that, access to the monastery was first by wooden ladders with pegs and gaps between them with the monks having to risk their lives to jump from one ladder to another. In the early 1500’s, the founders created a rope net that hoisted the monks and materials by hand up to the monastery.

In Meteora ,Greece, six magnificent monasteries still exist, precariously perched atop 1,300 feet high sandstone pinnacles. Hermit monks constructed the first monastery before nuns came to build too. Access to each monastery was crazy, a leap of faith, climbing rocks, and ladders lashed together or large nets until the ropes would break. The bizarre but beautiful monasteries of Meteora are centuries old and listed by UNESCO World Heritage.
