Visit the Monastery of the Holy Spirit
Here is a quick view of the Monastery of the Holy Spirit at Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area.

The Monastery of the Holy Spirit is the top destination in Rockdale County. The natural beauty of this 2,000+ acre preserve and the artistry of its historic buildings set the stage for a place that speaks to the soul.
The Monastery has always been open to the public, but in 2011, the monks incorporated a historic barn into a Monastic Heritage Center. The center includes an exhibit center, the largest bookstore of its kind in the Southeast and a renowned bonsai greenhouse.
At the visitor center, guests can view a film about the history of the area, follow the history of monasticim through the ages and discover how a group of monks chose Georgia as their home in 1944. One of their most remarkable achievements is the construction of the Cloister and Abbey Church. Built by the monks themselves from poured concrete, the building is an engineering and architectural marvel. It has been called “Georgia’s Most Remarkable Concrete Building.” For more images, visit our slideshow here.
The Monastery Visitor Center is open Monday – Saturday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
About Arabia Mountain NHA:
A vibrant history, breathtaking beauty and intriguing cultural changes in a compact area form the basis for the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area. From early settlers to immigrant rock cutters, freed slaves and Trappist monks many of those stories are still waiting to be told. This is a brief overview of the Area. Click through the menu to the left for more details on our history.
There is little written evidence of the area’s early history. By the time of Anglo settlement in the early 1800’s, the area was sparsely inhabited by Creek and Cherokee tribes. It’s believed that the area served as a buffer between the two nations as well as a transportation and trading area.[1] The land was ceded by the Creeks to the State of Georgia in 1821 and land lots were distributed by lottery to American settlers, many of whom were Revolutionary War veterans.
Historic Downtown Lithonia
The area remained sparsely populated well into the 20th century. A 1935 School District map of DeKalb County shows that many roads remained unpaved.[2] The landscape was dotted with stone quarries and rural farms. Most of the earliest settlements formed around the South River, which bisects the Heritage Area, or along crossroads such as the National Register Historic District of Klondike. As the railroad was established between Augusta and Atlanta, settlements moved from the river to take advantage of new transportation and commerce in the city of Lithonia, which was formed in 1856.
Today, the AMNHA’s proximity to Atlanta and its large parcels of undisturbed land make it attractive to suburban development. The broader Atlanta region was the second fastest growing metropolitan area in the country in the 2000s.[3] However, the area has been noted for its distinctive ability to retain “open and small scale character in contrast to the character of the fast growing metropolitan area.”[4] The topography and geology are “defined by rolling hills and ridges cut by numerous streams… most of the landforms in the region relate to underlying bedrock of granite and metamorphic rocks.”[5] Two exposed granite monadnocks that formed hundreds of millions of years ago are the primary features of the area.
Quarry ruins at Arabia Mountain
Arabia Mountain and Panola Mountain, now a county and state park respectively, bear evidence of 19th century human settlement and 20th century quarrying activities. Smaller granite outcroppings are scattered throughout the area and active quarries are found within the northern boundary. This “Lithonia Granite” has been used in buildings throughout the heritage area, the region and the country. The close proximity of the railroad allowed granite to be transported all over the United States for use in street curbing, municipal buildings and significant structures at the West Point and Annapolis military academies.

Georgia-Pilgrims Return Ancient Relic To Monastery
T/I 11:17:47
More than a thousand Georgian pilgrims, drenched by rain and holy
water, marched 25 kilometres (15 miles) on Saturday (20/4) to
return an ancient relic to the monastery where it went missing 10
centuries ago.
Thirty people at a time lugged a 350 kg wooden cross-- an exact
replica of one erected in 337 A.D., when the Georgian Church was
founded by King Miriam-- in a religious procession that wound its
way through the streets of Old Tbilisi and then up to the ancient
Dzvari Monastery in Georgia's ancient capital.

Virgin Mary Apparition Caught on Camera (3 photos)
A photo taken by a parishioner at Our Lady of Perpetual Help shows a illuminating human figure that appears to be the Virgin Mary. This miraculous story was reported by WGN-TV Chicago.
One north suburban Catholic Church is talking about a very thought provoking picture, shot with nothing more than an Iphone.
One woman snapped a photo last Friday in the chapel of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Glenview and says she got so much more.
Maureen Kent has been attending Eucharistic adoration at the church for more than 2 years. Kneeling last Friday, she wanted a picture of the Eucharist or host in the monstrance, the ornate gold stand it’s placed in.
The picture showed a bright light, an image larger than a human and appearing to hover next to the host on the alter. Catholics believe the host is the True Body of Christ.
No photo-shopping, she says, no doctoring the digital image. Just what she calls a great surprise when she looked at her screen.
Her friends in the chapel also believe it is the Virgin Mary. Authentication is not, right now, a consideration by Maureen Kent or even the church. They are relishing what they call a miraculous moment, privileged to have seen and believed, they say.
Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish is located at 1755 Grove St. in Glenview, IL

Me, Gunner, and my Father riding bikes at the Rockdale River Trail in Georgia. He has his REI ultra dog backpack on in Large. Soon the trail will become part of the Panola Mountian State park Bike trail. It is paved and very secluded. There are a couple of dirt trails/mountain bike trails all along the side going deep into the woods, in the summer there are tons of ticks so watch out! There are two bridges and one park. About every 300-600 meters are park benches and trash cans. Half of the trail is located right along the river. Filmed with a nikon Coolpix s9100
Abandoned Roman Catholic Cathedral!
In this video I explored an abandoned Roman Catholic cathedral with gothic style architecture. I explored it with Steve Ronin and John Yurei for an entire day, and we found so many centuries-old relics among the most beautiful architecture I've ever seen. This place has been on my list for so long and I'm so glad that I finally got to see it. I hope you guys enjoy the video. If you do, please leave a like and share it with your friends. Thank you for watching!
DISCLAIMER: I DO NOT vandalize the places I explore. I go to abandoned buildings to explore, take pictures, make videos, and document their history because that's what I love to do. Why? Because to me these places are beautiful.
