Figueira da Foz is a coastal resort and harbour at the mouth of the River Mondego.
An important centre of shipbuilding and manufacturing during the 18th and 19th centuries, the city (as it became in 1882) developed into a popular tourist destination during the 1920s and 30s and its two mile long sandy beach.
Buarcos is a traditional fishing town that has grown also as a noted beach resort due to the calm waters of its sea, which is protected by the Boa Viagem small mountain range (Serra da Boa Viagem). Many of its inhabitants still work in the fishing industry but tourism is also an important activity. It has many seafood restaurants and bars. With view over the bay and the extensive beach.

Figueira da Foz is a city and seat of a municipality in the district of Coimbra. Figueira da Foz is situated at the mouth of the river Mondego with the Atlantic Ocean. The Figueira da Foz, was elevated to the category of town in 1771 and on September 20, 1882, was elevated to the category of city.

Figueira da Foz is a city of the district of Coimbra, in Portugal. It is located at the mouth of the Mondego river, 40 km west of Coimbra, and sheltered by the Serra (mountain) da Boa Viagem. The city proper has a population of 27,742 and the municipality has in total 62,601 inhabitants.
It is a coastal city with several beaches, summer and seaport facilities in the Atlantic Ocean coast. As a city of tourism it plays an important part in the centre of the country. A zone of legal gambling, you find here one of the biggest casinos of the Iberian Peninsula -- the Casino Peninsular.
According to the legend the place's name is due to a fig tree, which stood at the quay of Salmanha, where the fishermen used to tie up their boats. The historian Nelson Borges said, however, that Figueira comes from the word fagaria, which means opening, huge mouth. Foz comes from the Latin word fouces = mouth of a river, and Mondego comes from the pre-romanic expressions mond = mouth and aec= river. That means, Figueira da Foz would be the river's mouth opening.
Some historical traces show that people were settling in this region since the neolithic age. The oldest known document, however, dates from the year 1096. In this an abbot named Pedro donates estates, which belonged to the church of S. Julião, to the cathedral Sé Velha of Coimbra.
Knowing the great importance rivers had in the development of cities and of ancient civilizations, the mouth of the Mondego must have played a central role for the fixation of men in this region and for the formation of settlements, which were the beginning of the city of Figueira da Foz. It was elevated to vila (small town) on March 12th, 1771 and turned city on September 20th, 1882.
Discovered as a sea resort by the end of the 19th century, it gained great reputation in the 1920's and 1930's. The city had the Potuguese nickname of Rainha das Praias which means Queen of the Beaches.
A Figueira da Foz fica situada no litoral atlântico, junto à foz do Rio Mondego, e é um dos centros turísticos mais importantes de Portugal, com um dos maiores casinos do país, uma praça de touros, um enorme areal com equipamentos lúdicos e desportivos onde por diversas vezes já se realizou o Mundialito de Futebol de Praia e uma animada vida nocturna.
A população activa reparte-se entre as várias actividades económicas da região, com destaque para a pesca, indústria vidreira, actividades ligadas ao turismo, construção naval, produção de celulose, indústria de sal e, como não podia deixar de ser, a agricultura. Mas quase tudo tem a ver com o turismo, sem essa indústria a cidade morria.
O território concelhio é atravessado a meio pelo Rio Mondego e da sua rede hidrográfica fazem parte várias ribeiras e cinco lagoas (Salgueiros, Vela, Braças, Corvos e Leirosa). A regularização das margens do rio provocou sérias transformações na prática agrícola.
Lugar de ocupação humana muito antiga, a Figueira da Foz conheceu um grande crescimento no século XVIII devido ao movimento do porto e ao desenvolvimento da indústria de construção naval.
Foi elevada à categoria de vila em 1771. Continuou a crescer ao longo do século XIX devido à abertura de novas vias de comunicação e à afluência de veraneantes. Em 1882, foi elevada à categoria de cidade. Nos finais do século XIX e início do século XX construiu-se o chamado Bairro Novo, de malha regular, onde se instalaram os hotéis, casino, restaurantes e onde se concentra a actividade comercial. Devido às condições naturais e ao equipamento turístico, a Figueira impôs-se como estância balnear não apenas para a zona centro de Portugal, mas também para famílias alentejanas abastadas e espanholas.

PORTUGAL - MONDEGO RIVER
The Mondego River is the fifth largest Portuguese river and the first of all that have their course entirely in Portugal. It is born in Serra da Estrela, runs through the entire region of the Center and has its mouth in the Atlantic Ocean, near the city of Figueira da Foz.

Figueira da Foz: Um passeio na costa portuguesa
Figueira da Foz é uma cidade na foz do rio Mondego que tem uma praia bonita. Quando eu estava a passear pela praia aconteceu algo extraordinário: uma nuvem de areia vermelha do Sáara escurecera a luz do sol e tingira tudo numa cor de laranja. Produceu um efeito quase apocalíptico, foi como um pôr-de-sol prolongado por várias horas.

Figueira da Foz is a Portuguese town at the mouth of the river Mondego which has a beautiful beach. As I was walking along the beach something extraordinary happened: a cloud of red sand from the Sahara darkened the sunlight and dyed everything in an orange colour. It produced an almost apocalyptic effect, it was like a prolonged sunset for several hours.

Figueira da Foz ist eine portugiesische Stadt an der Mündung des Mondego-Flusses, die einen schönen Strand besitzt. Als ich den Strand entlanglief, geschah etwas Außergewöhnliches: eine Wolke roten Saharastrandes verdunkelte das Sonnenlicht und tauchte alles um mich herum in ein orangefarbenes Licht. Es bewirkte einen beinahe apokalyptischen Effekten, es war wie ein um mehrere Stunden vlerängerter Sonnenuntergang.

Cuando yo estaba paseando por la playa aconteció algo extraordinario: una nube de arena roja del Sáhara oscureció la luz del sol y teñió todo en un color de naranja. Produjo un efecto casi apocalíptico, fue como una puesta de sol prolongada por varias horas.

Figueira da Foz est une ville portugaise à l'embouchure de la rivière Mondego qui a une belle plage. Quand j'était en train de marcher le long de la plage, quelque chose d'extraordinaire se produisit: un nuage de sable rouge du Sahara a obscurci la lumière du soleil et a teint tout dans une couleur orange. Il a produit un effet presque apocalyptique, c'était comme un coucher de soleil prolongé pendant plusieurs heures.
