This 1500-mile adventure begins in busy Virginia Beach and ends at the Maine/Canada border. Monhegan is a plantation in Lincoln County, Maine, United States, about 12 nautical miles (22 km) off the mainland. The population was 75 at the 2000 census. The plantation comprises its namesake island and the uninhabited neighboring island of Manana. The island is accessible by mailboat ferry (no automobiles) from Boothbay Harbor, New Harbor and Port Clyde. It was designated a National Natural Landmark for its coastal and island flora in 1966.[1]

The Nickels-Sortwell House is a historic house museum at 121 Main Street in Wiscasset, Maine, United States. Built in 1807 by a wealthy ship's captain, the house was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970 as an exceptionally high-quality example of the Federal style of architecture. After serving as a hotel for much of the 19th century, the house returned to private hands in 1900. It was given to Historic New England in 1958, which gives tours of the house between May and October.

August 22-27, 2018: We went to Boston for a work conference where I learned about fraud detection, response and investigations. Such a different mindset than when I was in public accounting. Went to a Red Sox game, ate a bunch of delicious food, visited Salem and spent time with family. A great trip to work hard and play hard!

Facing the Past: Malaga Island
Brief history of Malaga Island, Maine

The story of Malaga Island is a forgotten chapter is Maines’s history. The 41-acre island located at the mouth of the New Meadows River, and just two miles off the coast of Phippsburg, Maine, was once inhabited by a fishing community of black, white and mix-raced people.
The yellow journalism of the moment described the community as “degenerates” “peculiar” and the island “disgusting.” The discourse surrounding the community reflected the confluence of the racist eugenics movement in the United States, the Maine as “Vacationland” campaign, (as the towns along Maine’s coasts were becoming summer destinations), and economic retribution.
Today the island sits abandoned. In 2010, after years of petitioning by citizens of the State of Maine, former Governor Baldacci issued a formal apology to the descendants in a ceremony on the island. In 2012, the Maine State Museum exhibited Malaga Island: Fragmented Lives. And in 2017, the current governor, Paul LePage, acknowledged the horrific event and placed a commemorative marker at the Pineland Farms grave-site.
REPAST is a performative dinner on Malaga Island. A repast is a meal to commemorate the loss and celebrate the living and the cycle of life. Within African American cultural tradition, the repast is as important as the church liturgy. Death became associated with “homecoming” a release from the horrors of slavery. REPAST:MALAGA is a public memorial to the lives of those who inhabited the island before they were evicted in July 1912. The one-time event, curated by Myron M. Beasley, occurred on July 12, 2018.

Wiscasset ~ the prettiest village in Maine
Wiscasset has been dubbed the prettiest village in Maine. Several other places in the state might also claim this title, but Wiscasset is an undeniably attractive and pleasant place, marred only by the traffic that rumbles by on its Main Street, aka U.S. Route 1.
Here we see the heart of downtown, including several local institutions: the Taste of Maine bakery, Red's Eats (a tiny shack famous for its lobster rolls), and Sarah's Cafe. We then drive eastward out of town, over the Sheepscot River and toward the Boothbay Peninsula.
