The Toplou monastery is located on the northeast coast of Crete, about 10km east of Sitia and Palekastro 6km from the road to the palm forest of Vai. Toplou Monastery or Monastery of Panagia Akrotiriani is one of the most important and beautiful monasteries in Crete. It stands watch with its imposing 33-meter bell tower over a rugged, almost desert landscape. The Toplou Monastery is impressive from afar as it resembles a small fortress surrounded by a high wall of 10 meters.

Sitia - Crete (sights and attractions)
Sitia, a coastal town on Crete, situated in the northeastern part of the Lasithi region. It is accessible by boat and by plane and it’s an ideal base for exploring the surrounding area.
Sitia has all the necessary infrastructure to fully serve tourism, while keeping the authenticity through the selflessness of its people. I stayed 3 days and I visited Vai, Itanos, Piskokefalo, Exo Mouliana, Rixtis canyon and Moni Toplou.

Η Ιερά Μονή Τοπλού ή μονή της Παναγίας της Ακρωτηριανής βρίσκεται στην βορειοανατολικότερη άκρη της Κρήτης, 10km ανατολικά της Σητείας και 6km βόρεια του Παλαίκαστρου. Είναι μια από τις ιστορικότερες Μονές της Κρήτης και είναι γνωστή για τους πολλούς αρχαιολογικούς θησαυρούς της. Το Μοναστήρι είναι περιτειχισμένο με τείχος 10m, έχει έκταση 800τμ, είναι τριώροφο, έχει με 100 αίθουσες και ένα επιβλητικό καμπαναριό 33m. Στη Μονή φυλάσσονται πολύ σπουδαίες εικόνες και αντικείμενα Εκκλησιαστικής Τέχνης όπως Ευαγγέλια, σταυροί, Πατριαρχικά συγγίλια, Σουλτανικά φιρμάνια, σφραγίδες, επαναστατικά λάβαρα, αρχιερατικά άμφια και άλλα. Η επίσκεψη στην μονή μπορεί να συνδυαστεί, ιδιαίτερα το καλοκαίρι, με μια βόλτα στις τριγύρω πανέμορφες παραλίες, στην Αρχαία Ίτανο και το κοντινό φοινικόδασος στο Βάι.
Toplou Monastery is located in the northeastern tip of Crete,10km east of Sitia and 6km north of Palekastro. The monastery is one of the most historic monasteries of Crete and is known for its vast real property. The monastery is fortified with a 10m high wall, it spans a square area of 800 square meters and has three floors, with 40 rooms, a 33m high bell tower. Besides the icons, the monastery operates a museum with several old and historical religious objects, such as bibles, crosses, archbishops, sultan decrees, seals, revolutionary flags, etc. It is worth visiting Toplou, and you can combine the visit with the beautiful beaches of the area, the site of ancient Itanos and the famous palm grove of Vai.

The 15th centrury Toplou monastery is located in the northeast tip of Crete. It is renowned for it's rich and turbulent history and today it is known for its agricultural products and interesting museums.
The first sight of Toplou monastery from the road is a tall Italian-style bell tower dating from the 16th century and towering over the surroundings like a sentinel. The monastery itself is a cluster of low and well-preserved buildings.
The name Toplou is Turkish for cannonball. That's a reference to a cannon that defended the monastery from invaders in times past. You can see a hole above the monastery gate through which boiling oil was poured on attackers.
To get to the Toplou monastery, drive for about 18 kilometres on the road east of Sitia. The road can be dangerous, with a lot of hairpin bends. A KTEL bus from Sitia can take you to nearby Paleokastro, from where a taxi can take you to Toplou.
Toplou monastery has many works of art and today it hosts an interesting exhibition of Byzantine icons, books documents and ancient engravings classic collection of artifacts which reflect Cretan history throughout the centuries.

το μοναστήρι είναι μετόχι της μονής τοπλού$χτισμένο πάνω στούς απόκρημνους βράχους με απέραντη θέα το λιβυκό πέλαγος...είναι ένας χώρος απομονωμένος πολύ όμορφος γεμάτος βράχια και καθαρή θάλασσα.....η σπηλιά του γεροντογιάννη βρισκεται κοντά στο μοναστήρι ακριβώς πάνω από αυτό στην πλαγιά του βουνού,για όσους θέλουν να το επισκεφτούνε έστω για μια φορά.....!!!!!!!

Griechenland - Kloster Toplou (Kreta)
Wie eine kleine Festung erhebt sich das Kloster, das noch heute zu den reichsten der Insel gehört, auf einem Hochplateau 19 km östlich von Sitia. Seine genauen Gründungsdaten verlieren sich im Dunkel der Geschichte. Spätestens im 14. Jh. muss es jedoch errichtet worden sein.
Das Kloster wurde aufwändig rekonstruiert und präsentiert sich heute als kleines Schmuckstück, das zahlreiche Besucher anlockt. Eine wieder hergestellte alte Windmühle im äußeren Hof zeugt davon, dass die Mönche einst Selbstversorger waren und ihr Getreide selbst mahlten.
