Tlanavision Episode 11: Chocolate, Waffles & Beer in Belgium
Any country that is described by using the words chocolate, beer and waffles has my thumbs up! Belgium might be small in size but it packs a punch when it comes to its food and culture. Watch as I thoroughly enjoy eating 1€ waffles, eat scrumptious chocolate and drink beer made by monks. Enjoy!

Belgium - Blessed Beer & Alchemistic Ale
Maybe it requires divine intervention to make the almost alchemistic transformation from barley to beer a success.
(Beer) fact is, that there are numerous good Trappist and Abbey beers in Belgium. And because European Travel Magazine was fortunate enough to spend a month in the south of Belgium, abbeys had to be visited and beer had to be sampled!
The result of our beer-adventure is a map, some information, useful links and an invitation to GO YOURSELF, to pick out the abbeys or breweries YOU want to be part of your Belgian Beer Bacchanal and start touring.
Visit for our pick of Trappist or Abbey beer visits, that’s not only for show (many abbey beers are brewed elsewhere under license) but for sample as well!

Some information about the Trappist Breweries:
Our Trappist journey begins in Vleteren, Belgium at the St. Sixtus Abbey where we taste the Blond, 8, and the 12 beers of Westvleteren.
Chimay. The brewery produces three ales as well as a patersbier for the monks themselves which is occasionally sold as Chimay Gold; they are known as Trappist beers because they are made in a Trappist monastery. It was the first brewery to use the Trappist Ale designation on its labels.
Orval is the main brand. It is a 6.2% abv beer. It was first made in 1931, and has a complex and unusual flavor and aroma produced by a unique strain of yeast: Brettanomyces lambicus. The beer is light in color, slightly cloudy, and has a large, foamy head. There is a complex aroma of leather, spice, and many other earthy components.
Rochefort: Around fifteen monks live at Rochefort Abbey, where the first brewery was founded in 1595. The water for the beer is drawn from a well inside the monastery walls.Rochefort uses Pilsener and Munich-type malts, and Hallertau and Golding hops
Achel Brewery or Brouwerij der Sint-Benedictusabdij de Achelse Kluis is a Belgian Trappist brewery, and the smallest of the Belgian Trappist breweries. It is located in the Abbey of Saint Benedict in the Belgian municipality of Hamont-Achel. It brews six Trappist beers.
Westmalle Brewery (Brouwerij der Trappisten van Westmalle) is a Trappist brewery in the Westmalle Abbey, Belgium. It produces three beers, designated as Trappist beer by the International Trappist Association. Westmalle Tripel is credited with being the first golden strong pale ale to use the term Tripel
BELGIUM BEER BLESSING
STORY: Belgian brewers accompanied by musicians dressed in medieval costumes took a barrel of beer to Brussels' cathedral on Friday (September 7) for consecration as part of an annual celebration of their patron saint, Arnould.
Known as the Knighthood of the Brewer's Paddle, the guild of brewers walked to music through Brussels' historic Grand Palace to the cathedral for the ceremony, where the wooden cask of beer was blessed by a priest.
Belgian monks began brewing more than 1,000 years ago and there are currently more than 150 breweries making beers ranging from strong Trappist brews to fruit ales.
In a ceremony that dates from medieval times, Arnould, an 11th century monk and later a bishop in Flanders, is said to have blessed a local brewery whose beer miraculously cured local people from the plague.
The consecration will be followed by the country's beer weekend, an event gathering all brewers on the Grand Place to get the public to discover Belgium's over 1,100 different beers.
Daniel Krug, an executive at the brewery of the family-run Duvel Moortgat who is also a member of the knighthood, said the event gathered brewers from all around the world and it was important to celebrate Belgian beers.
The event was also attended by Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel, who said beer was central to both Brussels' and Belgium's international image.
