If you happen to go on the east side of Phuket city to Koh Sirey, you may see major changes of the landscape and appreciate the recreational park area to view and admire the monkeys, open to the public and tourists. This is the effort by local government to provide a better recreational area for residents. Let's have a look closely:
Everyday as many as one-hundred monkeys come out to play and forage for food near the mangrove forest, especially at night rejuvenating the atmosphere for residents & tourists.
The mangrove forest is situated on Thep Pratan Road in Koh Sirey in Rassada sub-district, Phuket. Residents & tourists of all nationalities bring their families for picnics, carrying various fruits such as bananas, rambutans, saving some for the charming critters. Statues of the crab-eating macaque catch the attention of many, and visitors stop by to take pictures beside them.
This resident said;
I often come here to observe the playful and friendly monkeys; I think it's a great facility for residents.
This tourist said:
...
The redevelopment included improving the mangrove area to be pleasant for monkey view points by building a bridge into the mangrove land for closer observation of the monkeys. This also minimizes the risk of monkeys getting hit by passing vehicles. People can also learn about the ecological system. Simple facilities such as seats, benches are also put along the sides. Garbage bins are also provided to prevent littering.
The mayor said:
we spent over fifteen million baht in improving the view point and recreational park. We received satisfying feedback and responses from the residents. We take this opportunity to improve the landscape further by adding some utilities to facilitate visitors.
The monkey view point development in Rasada area seems to suit the local needs well and perhaps is another hope for sustainable development blended in with local lifestyle and natural resources conservation.

Phuket Town - Phuket -Thailand
Video by
Phuket Town
Offering a different vibe to the beach, Phuket Town is where the culture and history of Phuket can be found. The busy town is a commercial hub for locals, who go about their daily routines. The community is still very traditional in some aspects with stores and restaurants that have been selling the same goods and serving the same recipes for generations.
Phuket Old Town
The Sino-Portuguese architecture brings character to the city. In the Old Town many buildings and even whole streets have been renovated to bring back their former glory from the days when the tin mining community thrived some 100 years ago.
Visit the clock tower, Soi Romanee, Dibuk Road, Thalang Road, Thaihua Museum and more locations where the shop houses and mansions are now homes, museums, businesses and restaurants. For a taste of the local night life, stay in town and go to one of the many bars that play live music.
Sapan Hin
At the edge of town the beach at Sapan Hin offers a respite from the busy streets. With a small beach, park area and walkways, its a great place to take a stroll or have a picnic, but not suitable for swimming.
Koh Siray
Koh Siray is an island connected to Phuket Town by a short bridge. On the approach to the bridge visitors can stop by a platform specially built for feeding the monkeys that come out of the mangrove to eat each afternoon. The island of Koh Siray is home to the largest Sea Gypsy community in Phuket. The peaceful island is mostly mountains and natural landscape, but in recent years development has begun and the small island is now home to a major hotel Westin Siray Bay Resort & Spa Phuket.
Koh Sirey Island Phuket
Koh Sirey on the east side of Phuket Town sometimes feels more like a small cape than an island. Covering only about 20sqkm, most of Koh Sirey is delightfully free of construction and driving along its leafy eastside coastal road with its rubber plantations is a pleasure. It really is like Phuket 20 years ago.
Along this coast is an abalone farm that hosts a restaurant with a view out over Phuket's east coast islands and Sapam Bay. Also, Koh Sirey plays host to sea gypsies and golden Buddhas. The tiny recreation park near a mangrove swamp by the main bridge is where locals feed wild monkeys every evening.

With a large number of monkeys on Ko Sirey Island, the Rasada Municipality is now planning to develop proper facilities for both the monkeys and the people. Our reporter has more: Almost a hundred of these monkeys or crab-eating macaques live among these mangroves along Klong Tha Chine canal beside Thepprathan Road in Koh Sirey Island just east of Phuket City and every afternoon the monkeys come out and look for food. This area became a recreational site for families who usually come with fruits like bananas, rambutans and others to feed them. Whether it's the right or wrong thing to do, it's still entertaining and relaxing for children to spend time with their parents. The Rasada Municipality, which is responsible for this area, is planning to develop the (200 rai) mangrove forest to be a eco-tourism site, a new educational area for people to observe monkey behaviors and help preserve the mangrove and natural ecological system. According to the plan, the project will comprise building a bridge and boardwalks to the mangroves for monkey feeding, with a net to stop them going on the road and also reduce risks for the creatures who sometimes get hit by passing vehicles. Other facilities include building a shelter pavilion for visitors who come to learn about ecology and public utilities to serve visitors. The Rasada Mayor, Mr. Surathin Leanudom, said the project requires around 60 million baht and it is now seeking support from central government and related agencies to push for the project. voice**** This is another development project planned to be erected on the island of Phuket with an aim to improve the quality of life and systemize the area. More importantly it can be another educational source for local people or tourists, young or adult, about Phuket's fragile ecological system. This moderately sized hill,
situated north west of Phuket city,
is a good view point for Phuket Island.
People from all areas like to pay a visit
and appreciate the scenic view of the town
from this viewpoint on Rang Hill.
Over 25 rai of land is nicely divided.
Each area is best utilized and valuable.
Just before the view point, there is a fitness park. Health enthusiasts come here
every morning & afternoon.
It's good, very good.
I used to regularly come here 20 years ago,
but later went elsewhere for fishing.
If I don't go away, I usually come up here.
If I'm free or after work, I would come up here.
I come almost every day.
It's clean with good air.
Not many vehicles. It's easy to access.
A short walk and you get to the equipment.
The afternoon time in particular
is very suitable for exercise
as it's nice with a cool breeze.
-Is it good that it has got exercise equipment?
- It's good that I can exercise and keep strong.
- Do you exercise here everyday?
- Everyday. After school, afternoon I come here.
- What do like most on Rang Hill?
- I like fitness equipment.
I come to exercise here after school
to keep strong.
In the fitness park, the area is divided by steps, keeping in harmony with the hilly geography. There are plenty of spaces
to install different types of fitness equipment
for health enthusiasts to choose from.
The trees are OK, nice.
There is a good flow of air here.
An actual fitness centre is too serious,
but here it's more relaxed.
We can take strolls and appreciate trees.
It's not as crowded as a fitness centre.
It's much more convenient here.
Walking up, we can exercise already
and when we get here
we have exercise equipment available.
Nearby is a statue of Phraya Rassada Nupradit.
Thai visitors to Rang Hill pay respect
to Phuket's prominent figure.
On the hill top, the land is nicely zoned,
with a road & parking to accommodate visitors.
The view point on top of Rang Hill
is now a destination for tourists
to appreciate the scenic view of the city.
It has a pavilion & benches scattered around
for visitors to appreciate nature.
It's not surprising to see both local residents
& tourists from afar visit the public park
every day at the view point on Rang Hill.
