SUMMARY
=======
San Jose (; Spanish for 'Saint Joseph'; Spanish: [saŋ xoˈse]), officially the City of San José, is an economic, cultural and political center of Silicon Valley, and the largest city in Northern California (both in population and area). With an estimated 2017 population of 1,035,317, it is the third-most populous city in California (after Los Angeles and San Diego) and the tenth-most populous in United States. Located in the center of the Santa Clara Valley, on the southern shore of San Francisco Bay, San Jose covers an area of 179.97 square miles (466.1 km2). San Jose is the county seat of Santa Clara County, the most affluent county in California and one of the most affluent counties in the United States. San Jose is the most populous city in both the San Francisco Bay Area and the San Jose-San Francisco-Oakland Combined Statistical Area, which contain 7.7 million and 8.7 million people respectively.San Jose is a global city, notable as a center of innovation, for its affluence, Mediterranean climate, and extremely high cost of living. San Jose's location within the booming high tech industry, as a cultural, political, and economic center has earned the city the nickname Capital of Silicon Valley. San Jose is one of the wealthiest major cities in the United States and the world, and has the third highest GDP per capita in the world (after Zürich, Switzerland and Oslo, Norway), according to the Brookings Institution. The San Jose Metropolitan Area has the most millionaires and the most billionaires in the United States per capita. With a median home price of $1,085,000, San Jose has the most expensive housing market in the country and the fifth most expensive housing market in the world, according to the 2017 Demographia International Housing Affordability Survey. Major global tech companies including Cisco Systems, eBay, Adobe Systems, PayPal, Brocade, Samsung, Acer, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, and Western Digital maintain their headquarters in San Jose, in the center of Silicon Valley.
Before the arrival of the Spanish, the area around San Jose was inhabited by the Tamien nation of the Ohlone indigenous peoples of California. San Jose was founded on November 29, 1777, as the Pueblo de San José de Guadalupe, the first city founded in the Californias. It then became a part of Mexico in 1821 after the Mexican War of Independence. Following the American Conquest of California during the Mexican–American War, the territory was ceded to the United States in 1848. After California achieved statehood two years later, San Jose became the state's first capital. Following World War II, San Jose experienced an economic boom, with a rapid population growth and aggressive annexation of nearby cities and communities carried out in the 1950s and 1960s. The rapid growth of the high-technology and electronics industries further ...
Apple pledges $2.5B to ease Calif. housing crisis
(5 Nov 2019) Apple has committed 2.5 billion dollars to ease California's housing crisis.
The money eclipsing similar pledges by fellow Silicon Valley giants Google and Facebook to address a lack of affordable housing in a region where affluent tech workers have helped drive up the cost of homes.
Apple's pledge Monday includes a one billion statewide fund to build new homes for households with low to moderate incomes and a one billion homebuyer mortgage assistance fund.
The company's promise also includes 300 million to make Apple-owned land in San Jose available for affordable housing.
Apple is also investing in a 150 million partnership with a Bay Area nonprofit to support new affordable housing projects and $50 million to address homelessness in the region.
Google and Facebook this year each promised one billion to help address high housing costs.
California Governor Gavin Newsom has urged tech companies to pitch in to ease a crisis in which there are far fewer homes and apartments than necessary to house the state's nearly 40 million people.
The state has also enacted new laws aimed at boosting funding for affordable housing and easing development restrictions.
The Bay Area has been swamped with highly paid tech workers, leading to bidding wars for the limited supply of homes in cities like Cupertino, where Apple is headquartered.
Faced with higher traffic gridlock and other headaches associated with hosting huge tech campuses, some communities on the peninsula between San Francisco and San Jose have been resistant to make room for new development.

Nov 6th 2017: Councilmember Rishi Kumar speaks at the CPUC Public Hearing on SJWC rate hike
Visit RishiiKumar.com/water for the latest protest and a summary of water rates we have either rejected, reduced or suspended.
The video of my pitch to CPUC is here , asking CPUC to give us money back and reduce our water rates - NOT increase it.
My heartfelt thanks to the gentleman from Saratoga who yielded his spot and let me speak today
(The presiding judge wanted to close doors at 10PM unfortunately, with many still waiting to speak)
I ran a facebook live streaming of the session - so you can watch the complete video
Summary of the meeting:
Many angry irate customer voices were expressed.
Many were asking: Why can’t we have a public utility company to replace SJWC; just like Palo Alto and many others do today.
Here is the petition for that - please sign it here
Many, brought interesting stats to share, and there were so many proof points that SJWC is just gouging us with a monopoly.
The only other council members present (and who spoke) were Councilmember Don Rocha (San Jose), Councilmember Steven Scharf Cupertino, Councilmember from Monte Sereno and myself.
As you know, Saratoga City Council has not made a stance on any of these rate increase proposals by San Jose Water company.
Bottomline - we will continue to keep pushing back by sending our protest letters to CPUC and ORA.
That is the only option we have as of now.
We have been pushing hard and finally we are seeing small wins with all these rejections:
AL 512 has been suspended by CPUC.
AL 510 rejected! CPUC initiates Investigation and Audit
AL 501 rejected! Currently being appealed by SJWC
The biggest win thus far was the removal of Drought Surcharges back in January, based on a campaign choreographed with the Santa Clara Water agency, effectively removing the drought mandate
Let us continue to push back against monopolistic gouging by SJWC!---
---------------------------EMAIL PRIOR TO THE MEETING --------------
Please join me at a PUBLIC HEARING WITH CPUC
WHEN: Tomorrow, Monday November 6th, 2017, 7:30pm. This will likely go on till at least 9:30pm
WHERE: City Hall of San Jose, City Council chambers, 200 East Santa Clara Street, San Jose CA
PARKING: Park in the underground parking under city hall (6th street) and get your parking ticket validated at the desk on the first level.
SPEAKING POINTS: Speak only for a minute. What? Visit rishikumar.com/water Search for Public Hearing where you will find a word doc. Click open and read a specific message that you can deliver
Please do show up and have your say
We are winning this push back against rampant rate increases by SJWC
Every voice that is expressed at this public hearing will help
- Rishi

[Message of UFO] Real Transparent Cloud UFO visited Korea air to warn of nuclear war
Continuing to develop weapons of war while maintaining the status of division of the Korean Peninsula,
nuclear war in Northeast Asia will lead to extinction of the global people.
To survive as an Earth, it is necessary to unify the Korean peninsula, stop developing weapons of war,
establish world peace, and then meet an alien planet to survive.
Why does the Earthman devise a plan to extirpate a wider universe, trapped by the Earth, sent nuclear bombs, and extinction?
There is an emergency in the universe because of the savage earthly people who can not really understand
The extraterrestrial planets must be aware that they are flying over UFOs every day to visit the Earth.
Territorial disputes can cause nuclear war and become extinct.
also If you leave the division of the Korean peninsula and continue to develop weapons
In this century, a nuclear war will occur, and the earth will be destroyed and polluted, and the earth will be extinct.
Earthman Even after World War II,
If you continue the history of weapons development and war
We are fighting against each other over the divided Korean peninsula.
On the day when either party fires a missile
That day will be the day of the earth people.
In this century, you should know that 1 second and 1 second of flowing to earth people is more valuable than gold.
Before it is too late, the Korean peninsula should be unified, disarmed including nuclear disarmament, ensured stable permanent peace
If you can not pioneer the day-to-day space transportation
The Third Nuclear War is in the state of being trapped on Earth like a frog in a well
Earthworms will eventually become extinct by advanced weapons and artificial intelligence robots.
It is important to understand that the Earth is an absolute value that must be observed for the survival of the planet, rather than monopoly and war.
It is natural that we should cut off the history of war and the development of weapons for the survival of the earth
It is important to note that this century is the last opportunity given to the earthly people in time.
The Golden Time for the Earth's survival is within this century.
Quickly, even a second, to complete the peace of the earth by all means and methods
The alien planet is in the beautiful planet Earth,
The war will become a nuclear war, and then the extinction of the earth is natural
The earth is destroyed and polluted, and the creature is transformed into a dead planet
I am worried so much that today and tomorrow is tomorrow
We will continue to monitor and observe all over the world, including the Korean Peninsula, in order to warn the people of the earth.
The planetary team that monitors and observes the planets of the universe to maintain the peaceful order of the universe
Warns that if the Earthman does not abandon weapons development and war, the portal to space will not open.
AN EVENING WITH DR. CORNEL WEST
Dr. Cornel West says his passion is to keep alive the legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.—a legacy of telling the truth and bearing witness to love and justice. In addition to his posts at Harvard and Princeton, West has taught at Union Theological Seminary, Yale and the University of Paris. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard in three years and obtained his master’s and doctorate in philosophy at Princeton.
Sheryl Davis is the executive director of the San Francisco Human Rights Commission (HRC), a city agency mandated to address the causes of and problems resulting from prejudice, intolerance, bigotry and discrimination in San Francisco. Davis previously served as commissioner from 2011 to 2016, including a tenure as vice chair of the commission. Prior to her work with the HRC, she was the executive director of Collective Impact, a community-based organization in the Western Addition neighborhood of San Francisco.
In a polarized country, with issues of voter disenfranchisement, police shootings of unarmed African-Americans and discussions of reparations at the forefront, our guests will explore the possibilities for improved life outcomes and opportunities for black people, particularly in cities such as San Francisco as the wealth gap continues to swell. In commemoration of the 55th anniversary of the HRC, created in response to antiblack racism in businesses, government services and community investments, join us for a conversation with one of the nation’s most prominent and provocative civil rights champions about America’s (and San Francisco’s) present and future racial equity.

How Much Do You Need To Earn To Be Rich In These Major US Cities?
Try Dashlane here:
(Plus, here’s a promo code: infographics)
Roughly 20% of Americans are considered wealthy, according to the Pew Research Center. To be in this group, you need be earn at least twice the national median household income, which in 2016 was $59,039, according to the latest data from the US Census Bureau. But then what your money is worth is also relative to where you live. $50 in Nebraska goes a lot further than the same $50 in California.

- October 12th, 2013 - The World Is Awakening! No To Genetically Modified Organisms! Millions marched across the world on this historical day to protest GMOs.

What is Monsanto and GMOs?
Check out the Official March Against Monsanto Facebook Page:
Why do we march?
-Research studies have shown that Monsanto's genetically-modified foods can lead to serious health conditions such as the development of cancer tumors, infertility and birth defects.
-In the United States, the FDA, the agency tasked with ensuring food safety for the population, is steered by ex-Monsanto executives, and we feel that's a questionable conflict of interests and explains the lack of government-lead research on the long-term effects of GMO products.
-Recently, the U.S. Congress and president collectively passed the nicknamed Monsanto Protection Act that, among other things, bans courts from halting the sale of Monsanto's genetically-modified seeds.
-For too long, Monsanto has been the benefactor of corporate subsidies and political favoritism. Organic and small farmers suffer losses while Monsanto continues to forge its monopoly over the world's food supply, including exclusive patenting rights over seeds and genetic makeup.
-Monsanto's GMO seeds are harmful to the environment; for example, scientists have indicated they have caused colony collapse among the world's bee population.
What are solutions we advocate?
-Voting with your dollar by buying organic and boycotting Monsanto-owned companies that use GMOs in their products.
-Labeling of GMOs so that consumers can make those informed decisions easier.
-Repealing relevant provisions of the US's Monsanto Protection Act.
-Calling for further scientific research on the health effects of GMOs.
-Holding Monsanto executives and Monsanto-supporting politicians accountable through direct communication, grassroots journalism, social media, etc.
-Continuing to inform the public about Monsanto's secrets.
-Taking to the streets to show the world and Monsanto that we won't take these injustices quietly.

TechCrunch’s Startup Battlefield is the world’s preeminent startup competition. Startup Battlefield features 15-30 top early stage startups pitching top judges in front of a vast live audience, present in person and online. TechCrunch makes the complete details of past Battlefields and participants available on the Battlefield leaderboard.
It’s important to note that TechCrunch takes no fees or equity from the startups. Applying and participating in the Battlefield is 100% free.
